Do you remember driving "bumper cars" when you were a kid at the amusement park?

I've always wanted to make a fairgrounds kart or pit car out of one of those. The deco styling on some of them is just too cool

  7. A guy in San Diego did those a few years back. Eight of them total I think. I was at Moreland Choppers in Solana Beach one day when he came in and let me take DMV OK for a ride. Frame is kind of like a custom Quad deal, motors are 750 Kawasaki. Did at least one with a Harley but said it shook everything to death. Scary fast and quite a hoot. People sure stare!

  9. I remember driving the things at Springlake Amusement Park in Oklahoma City and at the state fair and various carnivals around here. What ever happened to these things? Is there a salvage yard out there with a bumper car collection? Would make great furnature in the living room at home! Kinda like a massive TV chair. Where to find one?

I have two of them sitting in my yard. Sold them on EBAY a few months ago, the guy showed up and paid cash and said he would be back in a few days and I have never heard from him or seen him since.

What was that strange "lektricity" smell when we drove those things at the fairgrounds?

I remember riding them at Bell's Amusement Park in Tulsa Oklahoma, which was only five blocks from my house.

That electricity smell was the arcing in the contacts on the ceiling

  17. Hell yes! Dodgem Cars. tried for years to tear them up at the Pike in Long Beach. When Magic Mountain first opened, they had Dodgem Cars. God I loved those things. :D I'm affraid liability suits have just about erased them from amusement parks.

Hell, I was just thinking of putting in a Briggs 10 horse or something on a small go-kart frame. I think a 750 motorcycle engine is a tad over the top for me. Hahaha. I just wanted something to putt around the swap meets with. Maybe with a little deco trailer to match.

  21. Oh shit yes. I knew I would have a problem later on after the amusement park incident!!! We got thrown out of the park for ROUGH DRIVING LOL !! That's the day I knew I wanted to be a RACE CAR DRIVER >>>>.

I managed to get a ride once when only two others were riding. While they bumped each other around I made laps dirt tracking the turns sprint car style and had a ball.

  28. I had twin brothers that were 6 years older than I was. I still have brain damage from the infamous Dodgems at Edgewater park in Detroit.

Knoebels in Pa. still has the Lusse skooters and they still kick ass. You suck if you dont end up Black and blue the next day. And its a FREE park, pay to ride. great place!
