Well, at least the opening photo is of my "better" side (mental note..more exercise, less cookies).


The real problem is poor "engineering".
1. Someone used the WRONG brake hose. The hose was a generic part that was about twice as long as it needed to be. The correct part fit like a glove and even had a rub sleeve for extra protection..go figure.

2. The brake pedal can hit the floor before bottoming out in the master cylinder. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, make sure the master cylinder bottoms out completely before the pedal hits anything.


We'll check the rear brake adjustment and bleed them soon. Not sure how to fix #2 yet.

I think Denise has got some hillbilly genes in her someplace, wadyathink RB? Think about it....over a mile of dirt track'n a full size Oldsmobile lumber wagon on the sandy/stony shoulder of the road while squeez'n between stopped traffic at 70mph? I know more than a few Saturday Night roundy-round warriers that couldn't pull THAT off without a mark in the car or a stripe in the BVD's.

Glad to hear you, and "Big," are both OK...amazing how you can make sure you miss things (rear ends of cars) intentionally when there's a lot to lose...

One reason my car gets jacked up and everything that turns or moves is checked on the bottom side before I take a long cruise...ya never know what's going to come un-tightened, is rubbing, is s****ed thru or is leaking...

Dual cylinders have more travel than single cylinders. If the cylinder is added without changing the pedal ratio, then the cylinder will never get full travel, it won't be able to activate the "good" side of the brakes when a line pops, and adding the dual cylinder is a waste of time.

You can check to see if it's right, by loosening a bleeder. If you still have brakes, great! if not, then it's not set up right.

I hope you guys can figure out a fix for this, just in case something goes wrong again (and I sure hope it doesn't happen again, losing brake pedal is friggin scary)

I wrecked a car in the front once two times a month apart before I realized that for months I'd only had front brakes.

Tomorrow we're going to spend an exciting Friday night in the barn working on the rears and trying to determine a solution.

It sure has been the summer of mechanical failures for Big Olds. It's so surprising too since I spend so much time and effort between trips making sure he's up to snuff.

Quick question for you, IF I would have had an E-brake and used it on the gravel, would it have put me in a spin?

What I should have done according to my Father was to shift down into 2nd then low and I would have stopped faster but of course I wasn't thinking clearly.

While I do get an accomplished feeling working on Big Olds I would much perfer to drive him then wrench on him.

Been practicing all summer long on my go-cart. I swear I've got a couple hundred miles on it since the Jalopy Showdown in May.......you should see Scott's 2 acre property

Yep, me too, that's why he's checked over many times during the summer including early spring before he heads out anywhere.

Hopefully tomorrow night we can figure this out, or at least get a start on it.

In a town near here is a hot rod garage, and once a year in the spring they do an NSRA safety inspection. It's free and we don't have to be NSRA members to get our cars inspected.I'm thinking they would have caught the long lines and definitely would have seen the missing e-brake, food for thought. Glad you're ok.

Wow, a terrible story but with a happy ending. I'm really glad you and Big Olds are okay. I've been following your progress since we talked up in Bowling Green at the reunion years ago. I think he didn't have a grill or even paint yet. BTW, I love the new threads inside. That hub cap looks just like Marshall Dillon's hat I'd hang that ****er on the wall.

 

I'm just glad you didn't do any body damage. (To you or the Olds.) It ****s to be that hub-cab, though.

 

Glad you and big olds came out relatively un****hed. I had my brakes go out on my old suburban like this. I just used the emergency brake to get home on. I just held the release handle for the emergency brake open, and used the emergency brake pedal like a regular brake. Got me from Seattle to Monroe...about 40 miles with no problems. Just had to hunch over a little to accomplish this...Saved me a big tow bill though. I make sure all my older rides have good working emergency brakes now.

I am glad every thing worked out and you and Big Old's are ok, that was some heavy pucker factor as I was reading this. There will be other shows, that everyone is ok is the important thing.

Glad to know your a gal who can handle herself under pressure.Whew! What a ride that must have been! Sure am glad you were able to stop safely without any harm.Must have an angel looking out for you.

 

WOW, holy ****, sure am glad your OK! Man Scott you need to start charging by the hour for that lift
Hopefully you all can get it squared away, the pedal ratio is something I struggled with the whole time I had my 51. Do you have a residual valve on the rear lines? I think that will help keep the pads closer to the drums in the rear and not need so much pedal travel? Another thing is to pie cut and weld the pedal swing arm to gain travel.

That ****s to hear it broke, but Im glad you were able to get it off the side and get it slowed down safely. I have never had the pleasure of trying to stop a car with no brakes...but Im sure its scary as hell, especially on freeway traffic.
