Event Coverage If I didn't know any better I would have sworn it was Friday the 13th

I know you're new around these parts and don't know me or my car. I know I don't have an emergency brake, I don't need a NSRA safety inspector to tell me the obvious.....I don't have a horn either which is something they get "bothered" by every time they safety inspect my car. Yes, that's correct, I have had my car safety inspected probably more then a dozen times since spring of 2002 and not once did any of them make a comment about the brake line being too long and/or zip-tied.

Not only have I had the car inspected by NSRA officals BUT it has had so many eyes underneath looking at him over the last 85,000 miles that it really is shocking that not one person has made a comment about it or suggested I change it out.....not even when a professional shop owner changed out the other side on the fly in the fall of 2005 when I was in California.

Ultimately I am the one reasponsible for my car and it and my p***engers safety. While an extra set of eyes, or many sets of eyes are good, great in fact, a person still can't rely on anyone other then themselves to make sure their car is up to snuff and safe for travel.

I am SOOOOO glad that this story ended happily. When you called and weren't in tears I knew that you and B.O. had survived! I can only imagine what it would have been like if we were both there. Double the panic!

Glad to see you are safe, and big olds too.

There are a few inexpensive brake upgrades you can make if you have an A/G body subframe under there. 12" rotors are a snap and use factory parts.

Squirrel is correct also, you might need an adjustable pushrod for the brakes - then tack weld it after you get it where you want it. I have had to do it on nearly every car I have converted to a dual master cylinder.

Hoping that you don't lose your brakes in the future sweetie and try to keep your hubcaps on. Guess it requires a lot of maintenence on a car that sees 80,000 miles a year. Thank God my Merc only sees about 3,000.

glad your ok, your too cool to have something bad happen. i know how it is to have the brakes fail. i had just droped my daughter off at daycare and mine went out. i had a busted line and a single pot master cylinder. luckily it was in the parking lot at work. i just rolled down an imbankment and into the woods. i missed most of the trees.

 

KEEEERIPES! I'm so glad everything turned out for the best, but MAN did my ****hole pucker right up at the thought of speeding at a bunch of cars with no brakes in any car, much less your pride and joy. Gyahhh!

Wow, that sounds like one of my stories. I have that kind of luck every time I work on my truck. Some times it wins the battle, but I eventually win the war. Gad to hear you and Big Olds are ok.

You see guys, this is what makes chicks who build and drive cars so cool. I can't even think of any woman I know who could pull through that without hitting anything. My wife would probably swerve to the left, side swipe the car next to her, then bounce back into her lane only to **** the *** end of the car in front of her. I love my wife but she isn't a very good driver.

 

Wow, you sure are lucky (or a great driver)! I would at a minimum drain out that brake fluid on the rears and replace it. It looks a little black

Im so happy that everything turned out alright.

I always thought about the "what if's" involving my emergency brake. I dont know it all but I would think downshifting would potentially lock up and skid quicker than if you slowly applied an emergency brake. I actually had to use my emergency brake in my driveway a couple of times when we first built the 32. The first time I locked em up. The second time I pulled a click at a time and came to a gradually stop before i went into the road. I could be wrong but those are just my thoughts.

What would it make me if I do both? haha

 

Nick, how your emergency brakes reacts depends on the type of surface you are on. I've pulled it on purpose like most of us have in parking lots and such just to see. I've never used it on gravel but I would suspect that it would react very squirrely.

Downshifting on the other hand just puts a drag on the engine and slows Big Olds down in a hurry. I tried it again just the other night when we were testing the brakes. I used this method ALOT when decending Pikes Peak last summer as you can not ride your brakes down an incline like that without really heating them up, and that is not a good thing. I just wasn't thinking, I should have instinctively downshifted.

My thoughts on sharing this situation with folks is that some might check out their braking systems and other things on thier cars PLUS perhaps if it ever happens to them might think to themselves, ok, don't panic, downshift, or pull the emergency brake, or both, but don't panic.

I know I was very lucky and probably had an angel named Steve sitting on my shoulder.
