It was the last airshow of the season at Duxford in Cambrigeshire.Heres a few pictures of the warbirds on display. The weather was ****** awful and curtailed the flying displays. They have a hanger that is full of U.S. Army Airforce and U.S. Airforce aircraft, some of them hanging from the roof.Sorry if some of the pictures are blured,we were quite away from the flight line and my camera ain't that great.I've plenty more if you want to see more!

More! There is something noble about those planes in proper English weather. It's like a trailer queen driven in the rain, really warms the heart.

Thanks for the positive comments, heres some more pictures for you.The Spitfire, thats on the gr*** is one of the most famous Spitfires left flying in the world, MH434 one of the last few that fought in the Battle of Britain in 1940.She is a MK1V.She and the P-51 flew together to close the display. It almost brought a tear to my eye!I think if the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin engine don't move you, then you must be DEAD!The sound of two together is just stunning! The pinkish wreck on the pallet is a Japanese Zero, they're going to restore it!

  19. Man, England and the US are so lucky in cl***ic aircraft, wish we had some metal like that to grace our sky's!!
I am a particular fan of the English aircraft, you guys are just a little more fanatical about originality!! (well, a HELL of a lot more!)

It,s funny I posted a B17 on the English NSRA site and they removed it(****ing aholes) I would say WW2 planes are intrinsically linked with the early years of hot rodding!...........

great planes .. we owe their crews ,support staff and every other ally during that conflict so much...

Heres a few more for you.The Spitfire with the D-Day markings is one of the few two seat versions(I think converted post-war),there was a raffle to raise money to help rebuild a Bristol bomber and first prize is a ride in a two seat spitfire!I bought me a couple of tickets, wish me luck!:D

Thanks for the pics, great stuff.

I always wonder how come the mossie didn't get a reatractable tail wheel. The laminating work that goes into the mossie fuselages is incredible.

Mosquitoes did have retractable tail-wheels. They did not fully retract into the fuselage but they did retract. The one in the photo has its tail-wheel displayed fully extended--perhaps they had to mount it that way during the restoration?

Duxford is an amazing place: Original buildings, on-going restoration shops open to the public and an absolutely staggering number of aircraft, and armor. The gl*** wall dedicated to the lost airmen that flew out of England was especially moving, just for the sheer numbers.

When I was there, enjoying the planes, an elderly Brit gent came up to me and said, "Pardon me, sir. Are you a Yank?" I replied that I was and this man proceded to thank me, as a Yank, for saving England in their desperate time. He said that he was 10 years old then, and that there were only about a 100,000 old men and boys left in the country, and they were armed with fowling shotguns, pitchforks and shovels. Had Hitler gone ahead with his immediate plan, after the Battle of Britain, to invade the island, they would have overrun it without opposition. By the US giving England it's support, he said that Hitler had second thoughts, and that saved their bacon.

When I told him that I was not quite born then, he said "That doesn't matter". And with tears running down his cheeks, he said, "God bless America".

Only at Duxford. What a monument to good over evil.

Thanks for refreshing the wonderful memories.
