I like these, Chili. Maybe they could be a show-within-a-show, like the Suede Palace: The Primer Nationals, featuring SHITPROOF!

Oh, did I say that out here? I better go back to the OFC, I guess.

Kirk, I don't know if you've looked at the Old Farts' Club here on the HAMB, but I think you may belong among us. The general tone of this thread sounds like something from the OFC, which is not a bad thing.

Have we forgotten that Henry put it right there for the first 17 years of the flathead V8? Not that it's the best place...

What about cars that are ratty but were built with the intent on building a traditionally styled hot rod that is stylish, fast, and relatively safe? My first hot rod is the best I can do along the lines of traditional styling with my limited budget. I've used what I found. Actually, it started as a tudor sedan with a 250 chevy six and a chevelle 10 bolt. But then I started hanging out on the Hamb. You know how it goes. If it runs and drives and keeps getting better, I'll keep fixing sheetmetal, otherwise I'll leave it as is.

I get what the old school Hambers are saying and I completely agree with them. Good traditional style is timeless. Wasting a perfectly good body to get a few looks for a few months vs. attempting to build a car that is subtle yet revered for years and years is silly and I personally feel they don't belong on this website if only to remind us of our own tastes. I would appreciate that they respect what the Hamb is about. I don't post pics of my chevelle on the Hamb.

I feel my "A" is already traditional hot rod, or has the potential to be with some help from my fellow Suedes and Hambers. If my car will be viewed to Hambers as a rat rod, than I'm wearing rose colored glasses and I'll ditch it tomorrow, because it means I'm inadvertantly going down the wrong path. I'll submit my pics of my car-in-progress to the old school Hambers' constructive criticism because I want my cars to be styled like theirs. I value their critique. I like what they stand for. It's why I'm on the Hamb.

Anybody with a helmet air cleaner-tractor grilled-chopped past comprehension tacked together shit pile doesn't like it (if they have a car at all), please move along.

So is this a rat rod or a traditional hot rod?

And yes I know I'm missing an exhaust pipe. Damn if I could find that thing at the time.

  9. Racerjohnson, you've sure got the stance right. Now go fix the bodywork on your REAL HOT ROD.

my 2cents: It all lies with intent. Racerjohnson's intent is readily apparent. Racerjohnson = Hot Rod.

The controversial rods in this thread, their intent is also readily apparent. Those = ratrod.

The intent is obvious. The work may not be finished, but you can SEE the vision and intent in even the roughest Traditional Rod.

I've been saying this all along....The crap-rodz are everywhere...And, some of the cars in a recent, show coverage, thread that got a lot of praise were built in Florida, and sold out west on ebay...but they don't seem to count.

  13. I'm not an "old school HAMBer", but I'll comment anyway, RJ. I kind of like it. It looks like it was rescued from nature and is being driven again. Aannndddd it doesn't have "shock factor" stuff on it.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

Some of us can see the proportions are right and you're missing the barb wire, etc. But perceptions are funny. It's often the first impression that matters. So having purposely dirty whitewalls (which can't cost that much $ to brighten up) for most people will give that rat rod impression.

It looks like there were a lot of really nice cars at the Outkasts show and it was in a beautiful setting. I thank the Outkasts to putting on the show year after year cuz it looks fun. There are a few rat rods everywhere, and thats fine too, there will always be a struggle over whether they belong on the hamb or not. Time will tell, right?

I can see how perceptions will vary but my whitewalls aren't purposely dirty, they're 45 years old and I haven't cleaned them up. They'll work for around town for now, but need to be replaced before I drive much. I appreciate sgtlethargics comment, because stuff was rescued from nature, straightened and put back together into a body. I digress however, this thread is about the show in SD where I have seen some of the best traditional hot rods in the country come from. Since it seems like such a hot topic, I was asking for clarification on the line in the sand between what people call ratty and traditional. It seems to be "intent". Thank you.

  20. pete you should start a new thread so some who are ignoring this one can see what your doing

Haha, they probably should be ignoring this thread. I read the whole thread then felt like breeder ( "I should kill myself for reading the whole thing") but wanted to define the argument. Probably a pointless thing to attempt, but its so easy to get caught up. Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

  22. Too bad, that car would look nice with shiny paint. At least put some primer/sealer to preserve the body. I don't think anyone makes a 'glass '33-'34 Plymouth, so I don't think mistaking it for real steel would be an issue.
