Not a tank but Mooned. Many Lakesters use 15 inch fronts, 18 inch rears. Some use 15 on both. Some 18 on both. Some have used 16 inch wheels. They are not "Spec" cars. Roadster attached uses 50 Merc centers with Some narrow rims (VW?).15 inch Milk truck rears 18 inch. Home made rear covers.

I'm running 15s all around on my Tank. One reason earlier Tanks ran 18s was to bump up effective gear ratio. Wayno

Yeah. The main reason I'm running 18s on the back of the roadster is they look cool. At least I think so. Back in the day Firestone Indycar 800-18s were about the only real high speed tires around. And the 16s they ran in front. I got mine from Larry Volk at an early USFRA meet. maybe 79 or so. Still running them.

  5. We used a pair of 820 x 18 on the rear of the Original Golden Rod when we ran out of quick change ratios. Both the 800 and 820's are virtually impossible to find, and running 175 to 225 on tires made in the early 50's is a bit crazy anyway.
Bottom line is to use steel rims. Narrow 15's in the front and what every you can on the rear to match the tires you buy.

Really the only reason the 18's were popular on the lakes is it allowed them to use the surplus indy tires from the era, which were speed rated. These days speed rated tires are much easier to come by.

Yep....and early racers being low on $$$ couldn't afford 18" Indy car wheels, so they found out they could use the "milk truck" K-H wheels which were MUCH cheaper.

I think the 'Stones I am running came from some that Don Ferguson Sr. caused to have made in the 70s. That's what he told me, anyway. Since I plan on running the car at Lovelock in May, I think I'll step up for some Dunlops.
