Yesterday, we looked at an outstanding yet relatively obscure roadster. Today, we look at a coupe... The November, 1951 cover of Hot Rod Magazine is a well known one. Although the featured hot rod is labeled as the "Collegiate Coupe", the footballe...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
NICE lookin' Coupe, great stance! I reckon it ain't that low,it's just that they are BIG dudes standing next to it!!!! Shite joke I know! Still one great Deuce coupe!
Somehow I doubt the Rams won the Super Bowl in '51... Cool little coupe. And it is more proof that overchanneled / overchopped cars have always been around. So many cars were ruined by California's headlight laws back then.
It was cool back then and still holds true today. The one below looks like it took it's inspiration from the Collegiate Coupe although I am sure there were others. Channeled Deuces are just plain old Rad.
One of my top 3 all time favorite Hot Rods... First image I saw of it was an artist rendering in a English Magazine. I stared for hours at it, and other pics and articles I found of it later... And I have a 5W Deuce body waiting, as one of my next projects. ( I wouldn't clone the Car, but it would have a lot of its stance & proportions... )
Now I know why I like the Collegiate coupe so MUCH, as Bo Bertilsson's Coupe is THE BEST Deuce 5 Window in the World in my opinion! The similarity is stunning!
I don't know why ... but I've always had a soft spot for chopped & channeled Deuce 5-window coupes! The Don Williams' "Collegiate Coupe" is a very cool example ... and probably why the November '51 issue of HRM has always been one of my favorites. Lynn Yakel's 5wd is another fine example: "The Inspiration" for the HEMI32 5wd Coupe: Lynn Yakel's chopped & channeled "brilliant maroon" 5wd Coupe ... as featured on pages 72 & 73 of the 1951 Hot Rods TREND BOOK NO. 102.
I keep tellin' La Belle that I fit into the Collegiate coupe perfectly, and he should just sell it to ME! When donkeys fly. The Lynn Yakel coupe is my fave though. My friend had it in the 80's and sold it, doesn't know where it is now, oh well. I'll just drool over Jack Carrol's car in the mean time.
i must say, i like the goofy headlight perches... but as i've been hearing my whole life, i am a goofy basturd
This car really does it for me. It has it all. I have to agree with some others, I like the whole package even the head lights and mirror. Bitchin. thanks for sharing
Sat in the car in its time capsule bubble (stored indoors in trailer) a couple of years ago, and right before DeRosa started the resto on the body, its amazing but it has pretty good visibility and its almost a comfortable car.It is in good company with John, ill see if I can find my pics before the leaded in rear fenders were removed,John has a chair inside so he can just sit and stare.
DeRosa did the body restoration? ... I did not know that ... sure would like to see those pics of it with the leaded-in rear fenders. Here's it is @ Pebble Beach in 2001: Yet another Hot Rod feature car sitting pretty at the Beach was the Don Williams' "Collegiate coupe," an eye-catching '32 five-window that graced the cover in October '51. Although a stock '46 Mercury flathead was used for reliability (it was a daily driver), the rest of the car came in for a lot of attention. Chopped five inches and fully channeled, it had a seven-inch rear kickup and wide whitewalls. It was just the thing for cruising, back before it was nostalgic. Owner John LaBelle used to watch the flashy red coupe whiz past when he was a kid, and bought his dream drive from Williams' sister after Don passed away. It was in excellent period condition.
That car is perfect right down to the air in the tires, except for that mirror and the headlight mounts. I like Bo's mounts MUCH better. The stance is spot on. Hell, thats a very tasty car in every way! That rear nerf setup's sweet too!
I believe the radiator & grille shell are mounted forward of the front cross-member ... adding a few inches to the hood & side panels.
I saw that car a number of years ago at Deuce Day in Novato and thought it was about the coolest thing ever. I knew LaBelle owned it but originally thought it was the Yankel car, subsequently found out it wasn't and always wondered just what it was. Cool to finally find out. Man that is a bitchen car.
Bob Waterfield? He must be a ball player because I've never heard of him... The cover photo seems far too contrived. A bunch of Basketball players standing around a Hotrod? I have never been able to see the parallel between the two. I dig the Coupe none the less...
Those aren't basketball players dude... Those are football players. They... awe hell, nevermind... It's a gesture of quaintness. It's supposed to look contrived - just like the dude (Bob Roddick) jumping out of Dick Flynt's roadster.
Sorry guys but, While derosa did do the bodywork The paint was done by Rick bacon (also known as the arsonist/ host of muscle car tv) and the entire rest of the restoration was done by Mike and Leroy Smith of California hot rods in Sonora Ca back when They were working out of the garage at Leroys residence. Trust me on this Mike is my cousin hense leroy being my uncle so, I was around while the car was being restored. The Car is absolutly bitchin. One of my personal all time favorites.
