Motivation is provided by a DIY MegaSquirt EFI feeding two Garrett turbochargers on a 515-cubic-inch Merlin big block Chevy. 700 horsepower on the dyno. There's a page about the car with pictures of the engine here:
    http://www.diyautotune.com/cars/customer/gary_hart_studebaker.htm

This video is the work of Jerry Hoffman, and can be found on YouTube here:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5qmJSGS3u7I&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5qmJSGS3u7I&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The video gets going about a minute in. Audio quality, decent. Permission to crank it.

Now thats one hell of a ride!

  4. I could watch these videos hundreds of times. Gary's car is very cool, he made the runs with only 15 psi springs in the wastegates, but was only making about 13 psi. Congratulations to Gary Hart Racing.

Thanks for joining us here. On the right side of your page with the video, look under "Embed", select all of the code that begins with "object width", copy it, and paste it here like this:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8E4LMCv-Lxg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8E4LMCv-Lxg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

It takes more than 700 horspower to go 242 mph. Id be willing to bet its closer to 1000 hp. Cool car and video though.

Thats what got me thinking at first. I have built 430 ci NA small blocks that make 900 crank horspower all day long. Im sure the engine has been tuned very conservatively to withstand 1 to 2 minutes at WOT, but still that engine, depending on what components are involved should be capable of anywhere from 1300-1800 horspower. Im sure it makes more than 700 to go 242 though.

maby it just ran the dyno to it's limits. :) i would like to know exactly how much it's got,but it's a hellava fast car, thats what matters. the numbers tell the story.

this car is great. i've been following diyautotune's coverage of it for a couple years. this car provided a lot of the motivation for me to put megasquirt on my pontiac. i was nervous about an open source ecu, but if it's good for a world record, then...

Awesome!! I just sat in the car with my kid today!
He was asking me all kinds of questions about turbos a few years ago after being around my Camaro a little bit and being quite "intrigued" about them. He had a big ass blower on it before that.

If you guys like this car, you would prolly nut it from his last car. It was from the shorter side of racing.....a real deal gasser'esque Willys with a blown big block with a 4 port, and matched raced it a bunch. THAT car was my all time favorite car growing up and seeing it cruise around slipping the tires with the blower surge....TOO COOL!!

Thanks for the repost of the vids, he told me to check out the new ones on the site.

AND BTW-the turbos are just some junkyard-ish turbos that are waaaaay too small to support a bunch of HP on a big block. But it do work!

the 700 figure was good for 237, another 5psi got him the 242 number.

That's WHEEL HORSEPOWER and it's on a calibrated dynamometer. On 15psi, it's around 925hp at the crank, and that's all it takes to go that fast with the aerodynamics of the car. You can't say "XXX horsepower for YYY speed" without accounting for aerodynamics, downforce, gearing, and at least 20 other car-specific parameters. Most people are used to "Dynojet" numbers which are inflated about 20&#37;. This is a Mustang dyno measuring actual SAE power applied to the wheels. It's rated at 1500+whp so the dyno was in no way "maxxed out" - we get a lot of guys with "800hp Hemis" that are disappointed to find they're making maybe 450 at the wheels, happens all the time. :)

Do any of you guys know what he is using for a gear box? I can hear him rowing through the gears so I know its not an auto.
