Okay, here's the deal. I love lake pipes. I'm gonna put some on my F100 panel, they're gonna be dummies because sitting in the back in my wheelchair, they'll just be too loud, and besides, I like the quiet burble of my gl***packs. The thing is, the running boards on the Panel are saying 'put the lakes on top, exiting from the front fender, 'cos we're the perfect shape' and my head is saying 'lakes usually go under the running boards'. Bearing in mind, I'm losing that gas cap, during her Kustom make-over, check out the photos below, and let me know what you guys think.
If your gonna put them on definitely go under, if your not gonna hook them up, don't put them on. IMO
If you must have lakes, above the running board especially, at least have them hooked to a cutout. So you are planning on tucking them in by the splash apron?
Yeah, I agree with what you're saying. Perhaps I should've better explained. I'm using them to give the truck that kind of late '50's early '60's show car look, so the fact that they're non-functional is sorta the point. Does that make any sense, or is it just the deluded ramblings of a feeble mind? And I guess I am silly. But am I insane? Keep it coming. . . . By the way, the functional pipes are well hidden.
I like lake pipes (hooked up or not) and they would look kool on your ride. Mount them below the running boards because your doing it for looks not performance. Post some pictures of the truck when you get them mounted. Happy Trails, Mick
I like the pipes, but I get the mental block of "if your not going to use it, why put it on". I realize your going for style, but is just seem like the same thing as putting a parachute on a street rod.. Just my 2c.
i bought all the cheap silly trinkets for my 53......now that im a lil older, i hate it all! messed up good wsheild trim for fake spots, lakes didnt hurt anything, i just done likt them anymore....when my car gets fixed for safety, ill be running themagain....but this time they will be hooked up! just my shiny pennys worth.....look great when there real!
For the benefit of those "youngsters" that insist on hooking up Lakes Pipes ("if your (correct spelling: you're) not going to use it, why put it on...?"). Most Lakes Pipes back in the "show car" era were not functional...they were for looks only (why would you want to ruin good chrome on a "show car" by running dirty exhaust and heat thru them...???). Put 'em on... However, here's my take on it...since you're removing the gas filler/cap, that means there's body work involved...so...slice your running board the width of the pipe, set the pipe up flush with the top of the board...that way you retain the board and have the "show" of chromed Lakes Pipes...if you're going to build a "custom", then do some custom mods... R-
I wouldnt run them hooked up. I like them on Kustoms no reason to hook them up. Have some cool caps made and run duals out the back, they are for looks.
Tickets arent lol No really it seems the younger crowds dont understand why the dummy spots and dummy lakes were used.
granted my opinion isnt worth much but I always feel the need to give it away... I like dummy pipes almost as much as I like dummy spots.
I say put 'em on top, but up tight to the body and flaring out, following the rear fender......I've seen it done in old show coverage. Looks cool. While your at it, chrome the running boards. BUT....hook 'em up, just leave 'em capped.....
Here's the deal, they look the same, I've had them both ways. For my money do it the way you like it's your panel. I would incorporate them into the lip of your running boards, like molding them in, now that's kustom. Good luck whatever you decide. Rags
I'd probably put them under or as someone else said, lose the boards and use them as filler. AND as someone else said dummy Lakes Pipes are about as traditional for the 50's/60's show rod / Custom as you can get. Seen more done that way than actually hooked up! Look at the old books and see all the ones with caps, those can't be hooked up now can they, or at least not as the only exhaust. We used to split the exhaust to both the Lakes and a dual exhaust and Un Cap the Lakes for cruisin. No cutout necessary
That's the idea, you put it much better than me. But whether they go below or above, they're gonna run the length of the vehicle, and like '40studedude says, I'm not hooking up, 'cos I don't want 'em going blue. If I do put them on top, the running boards are gonna be red candy over silver flake over black.
I'm with SC, I think they would look like too many layers with them under the running boards. Or how bout you run a quick dump out between the fender and running board, coming outta the fender? that might look pretty slick!
I'm agin it (correct spelling: against it)! I don't think you should run 'em either way--but then, I just don't like those long lakes pipes to begin with. But it's your car; you should do what you want to do.
all customs should have fake spots, fake lakes pipes, fuzzy dice, a mural of elvis, James Dean or Marilyn Monroe along with "lost in the 50's" painted on the dash and quarter panel.
Fake pipes are like fake ****s. Fun to look at, buy you're not fooling anyone. I say hook those ****ers up. You have plenty of room under a truck to route gl*** packs and make an s-turn back to the point the pipes dump out. There's my two pennies.
Kripfink, put some exhaust cut-outs linked to the lakes pipes so you can run when you want and still be able to run your gl***-packs!I sure there are types of cut out that don't involve grovelling about on the ground! I say use Bell-flower tips or kick-stand short lakes pipes if your goin' for that's 60's vibe Man!
If ya gotta have them then hook them up...I uncap mine all the time and they aren't as loud as you think...I insulated my panel and it made a huge difference on the inside...I would either lose the running boards or mold them into the running boards
