    WCD,

I believe this is the Moats car, the number indicates Div. 5.

Speaking of Jim Maybecks Miller Place, LI base Corvair F/C:

His cc on and off was the virtually unrecognized Terry Leslie. I worked as Terry's body shop helper after he retired in the early 70's from the nitro tour.

Terry put a roof hatch on the Corvair and when Maybeck had a bad fire in the car, he was forever grateful to Terry FOR SAVING HIS LIFE! As you'll note in the photo, there was full windows and no way of escape until the roof hatch was fitted. Maybeck could have been burned alive without Terry's thoughfulness!

    90% Jimmy

Wondering how many other unsung heros of nitro history are still out there?

FANTASTIC shot. Did anybody do this at the CHRR? All I can find are pit/grove shots...

WCD I believe Sheldon's driver was fatally injured in "Snoopy" and forgive me for not knowing his name. Story has it that Sheldon drowned off the coast of CA and they never found his body as I remember it.

  20. That is correct. Sheldon's son posted that information here a while back.

My uncle raced his Pontiac stocker there a few times when the track first opended. Primer black and full size Moons all around. I was there but once, 62 or 63, I cant recall. But I do remember that it was hotter then hell that day

Dated a girl in the mid 70's whose family lived up the street ( border city called Etiwanda) She commented once as we passed by the then long abandoned venue about how loud the cars were and how you could hear the faint announcers voice. Irwindale Raceway and local home owners group killed Fontana Drag City.

I took this photo of the closed up Fontana Drag City tower as I drove by in 1981...sad ghostly remains of many fun days spent there...especially when they ran four jet dragsters at once..yup, at once.

Here is a much better quality of a photo I posted many months ago.
I got this from Jere Alhadeff, the photographer who was next to us all day at the CHRR last saturday.
This photo was taken at Keith Black's engine shop in South Gate, just off the Long Beach Freeway back in the 60's.
Bill Shrewsberry had brought the "L.A. Dart" to Keith's shop for a big gathering of bigwigs from Chrysler Corporation..notice the stiffs in the background wearing suits and ties.
The "L.A. Dart" was supposed to just be on display at the shop for photos and as a show piece.
One of the Chrysler big shots asks, Shrewsberry, "Well, what does this thing do, just go fast?"
Bill said, "Why don't you get in and sit on the aluminum floor (no seat) and hang onto the roll bar strut, and I'll show you what this thing does".
So, in the photo here, you can't see it, but there is a guy wearing a tie, sitting on the floor and looking at the sky, probably going..."holy shiiiiit!!"
