Nice call Bob! Needed something to distract my attention from the Boston Massacre on TBS. Will be interesting to see the level of bids in these crazy economic times. Maybe all those crooks from Wall Street will spend our tax money and keep the values of our passion alive. B-B-Boohaa!!!

Update, Ortiz just launched one. We aint outta it yet.

  10. Great time to buy!

My fave so far was the Trans Am racer that went for 9000. You can't buy the center-lock wheel setup for that!

  11. I missed that one. What Trans Am car was it? Real deal raced in the day of the original seris cars are easily six figures, or was it the Chris Kniffel (sp) "New" trans am car, a Baretta no less?

It was the Baretta, no engine

  13. Then that was probably "Right Money" as they like to say

  14. That black T-bird at the end for $40 K was way low from what they would have gotten a year or two ago. Signs of the times.

  15. Anyone besides me think the 54 Chevy rag was 'not right' ?? Tunnelled headlights that looked like tomato juice cans bondo'd on - you could see the bondo on the underside as the camera panned over it, the top was way high in the back and the antenna was crooked in its tunnel. Maybe I'm too critical........

The Model T circus truck W/ the popcorn trailer was awesome and went relatively cheap. You guys are right, that Chevy rag top was uglier than a mud rail fence.

  18. I tape it and fast forward through commercials and cars that don't interest me. Can watch in about 1/2 the time. Dont you just love Steve (Mr. Radio Delete Plate" Magnante?

I enjoy watching the program for a lot of reasons. Thought that it was kool
that they showed a '96 Roadmaster wagon. My wife saw what it sold for $17,500
and thought we should sell mine. Mine should bring more since it is lowered...LOL

Looking forward to see what Boyd built '57 Caddy (#815) sells for..

Gotta go buff up the Roadmaster...

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

Thanks BadBob for posting this 'Reality TV for car guys' reminder.

$67k for a restored 1940 Ford pickup WTF:confused:. But the 1937 Terraplane Coupe Express for $18k was a bargain.

Some buddies and I were having a discussion Wednesday night, wondering if 'the money' will move back into classic cars since the stock market and housing market are in a mess, or will it just be predatory buying? Barrett Jackson may be a good barometer of where it is heading.

I'm heading to the auction now (Friday morning). $15 tickets, not bad. Just lookin, though.

  22. no question there were some low prices on there. The terraplane, the 56 lincoln premier for $10k and those two thunderbirds - a 62 w/AC for $10k?

It seemed to me they didn't keep the cars on the block as long as they have in the past.
    Maybe the change of venue?
Did/do the auctioneers work harder when there was/is a reserve?
I must have heard the term "well bought" 25-30 times, used to hear "another record price"...

  24. Barrett Jackson is not a good indicator, never has been. Not only do they mess with the sales to get higher prices, they're a unique market. Each of the auctions has it's own market, and each caters to a different crowd. You won't find the same people going to R&M that you find going to Mecam.

And don't forget that the absolute top of the market moves in different circles than the rest of us. At least around here there has been no impact whatsoever on the multi-million dollar vacation homes, just like there won't be any impact on the very high end auto collectors.

I agree about the 54 Chevy ragtop. That car didn't look right from any angle, and didn't look that well done. I noticed that the paint was flat on the rolled pan on the passenger side...no shine at all.

I was surprised at the $70 K the '74 Trans Am brought...and surprised the 37 Ford sedan with matching trailer brought so little...it wouldn't take much to make that 37 Hamb friendly.

You can bid on your own car. So alot of these "no reserve" cars that go cheap i.e. "well bought" are actually bought back by the owners. I have heard that about 30% of their sales at these things go that way. You just have to pay the buyer & seller commisson (about 20% total)

There was some good deals I thought. I noticed that rear panel on the 54. The top really made it look all wrong to me. Probably would have went alot higher if they would have put the top down. Probably would scare you to see what it started out like.

I just got back home from the BJ auction and saw a ton of great cars. I was surprised how many modifieds and customs were included. Normally when I watch the TV event (Scottsdale) I see fewer modifieds/customs, and more original restorations. Maybe they edit and pick & choose what goes on the program when they broadcast repeats. Anyway I forgot my camera, so take my word for it, There were some fine rides...

I too was surprised at the calibur of cars since this was the inagural Vegas event. Very low in my oppinion. I was going to make a point to get down there, but now it has become much less of a priority.
