thank god for all those folks who are so deeply concerned about my safety and welfare that they constantly point out that my cars don't have ABS and airbags, and are "OLD" and unsafe to drive......
well, not only does my Galaxie not have ABS or airbags, it hasn't got cupholders, a DVD player, Ipod jacks, GPS, it doesn't have power steering or power brakes yet it stops on a dime and straight as an arrow.
the only "climate control" it has is a heater and windows that roll up and down BY HAND no less!
the only concession it makes to modernity is a cruiseomatic trans and radial tires....

and since there's only three fuses and one relay it takes quite a bit to make it stop running, where a single bad sensor will put any new car on the side of the road in a second.

yer gawdamn right i drive it.

i hear that all the time "arent you afraid it'll get scratched?" i politely reply as in a form letter "no, im not afraid my $8,000 car will get scratched, i painted it in my garage, and i can fix anything that happens to it. aren't you afraid your $80,000 BMW will get scratched?"

"Brookie" my '53 Plymouth has got your electrical system beat. I think there may be one breaker somewhere under the dash, but other than that it is all wired direct. I have about 1,300 miles on it this summer, and the one car show I went to I marked on the sign "yes I drive it, A LOT!"

Your whole driving straight thing kind of kicks my *** though, I definetely have a bad case of "drunken monkey steering" going on.

  7. I tell folks that some guys have more money tied up in the trailers they haul their cars in than I have invested in my '38 Ford pickup.

  8. That's why my daily is a beater. 100% paid for, ugly, scratched up, half***ed bodywork (keep it in service, not make it pretty), but it gets me where I want to go, it's comfortable, and if I need to drive 1500 yards off the road through the gr***, I just go. (A Chevy truck locker rearend is a nice thing). Cupholder? I bought one at the parts store for $2, hung it on the door, and one of the screws for the door strap holds it down just fine. Airbags? Come for a ride with me and I'll have one.

Hoof, you do have a fuse a 30 amper on the back of the headlight switch. If it blows you have no lights anywhere. Alos if you look at the wiring schematic, quite a few circuits p*** through the horn relay, so if that goes bad a bunch of stuff stops working. the 30 amp circuit breaker is suposed to be a self reset thing but who knows after 60 years????

I bought my cars to drive. Why would you want an old car and not drive it? It is a car after all.

nobody ever talks to me about anything when I drive my old cars.:(

  14. Things might be changing back a bit. I listen to a new car radio talk show on the weekends. They reviewed the new Cobalt and were impressed with the eco-freindly stripped version. Even has hand crank windows. The one host mentioned his daughter had NEVER been in a car with window cranks! I wish my Ranger had a few less electronic gadgets!

In high school my only car was a 53 chevy 210, 235 blue flame, power glide, va***e wipers and all. I drove it year round. Took it to Fla. from Ohio for spring brake. Almost every time I stopped to eat, or gas up, somebody would notice the Ohio tags and say "You drove that old thing this far?" I would politely remind them, that in 1953 people would drive one cross country and not think twice about it. They would just give me that blank stair, and say "Uh yeah" then walk away.

I love driving my 50. Only thing that scares me is the m***ive amount of play in the steering. Gotta fix that........ Every time I drive it above 45 mph I think "today is a good day to die".

In the summer of 1967 my driver was a 55 Ford Victoria. One weekend a couple of pals and I decided to go up to Pikes Peak. One guy said "I don't believe that OLD THING made it all the way up here". My comment was " Ya, it made it, and on the way up I noticed a whole lot of newer cars that DIDN'T". I thought to myself WHAT AN ***.

sad to say but even people at bonneville found it hard to believe that I drove my 34 chevy there from washington by myself without a buddy car or support rig, I have 135,000 miles on it in 10 years, any day it does not rain I drive it to work year round.

Pops Stude will run 80 all day long, straight as an arrow, I like it when late model cars "aint gonna be outrun by that rusty old car!"

The Shoebox doesnt really steer, its more like herding a turtle.

I've had several people tell me that they see my 52 chevy 5 window all over the place and can't believe I use it for my daily from about march to november.
I've also had people say that they can't believe i haul stuff in it.
I drive it as much as i can in every type of weather except snow and use it like a truck when needed!

In the first year of my ply being on the road I got a little over 5000 miles on her no walking or AAA call;s. I had to go to portland a few weeks ago and some of the staff was asking why would I take a chance driving her in Portland ? Well it was a every day driver the first 50 years of her life why change a good thing. LOL.

Tell 'em its climate controlled, whatever the climate is outside, that's what is inside the car.

Or "only when I fart and someone rolls down the windows".

I carpool and one guy told me that he almost quit riding with me because my 54 Chevy didn't have seat belts. My 56 Pontiac does and so far he hasn't said anything.

Except of course when I fart.

People always ask "Is that thing street legal?" when they see me drive my wifes car. They like to tell me it has a "CHEVY inline 6, not a FORD". Friggin idiots...
