  1. i just got my front ansens 15x4 in today which need to be polished like the backs 15x8.5. anywho my question is what tires would look the best on these rims. i am loking at some hurst fronts and backs, as well as radials. i am tring to go for the late 60s early 70s hot rod/ birth of street rodding look. so any suggestions???

oh yeah these are going on a 31 tudor sedan on a 32 frame

ok after some carefull thinking . im gonna go with the dirt trackers. i went thru some old 70s mags and saw a set on some ansen and they look bad ass!!! but my question is. what do the 8.20 15 firestones look like on a 8.5 inch rim? do they look funny or would i be better off with the larger 13x30x15 firestones on that rim?? i need some more help:D any pics of the tires on a 8.5 or 8 inch rim would do
    thanks ahead of time

Front tires were usually off of a VW. Small 15" tires. Rears would be "wide ovals" G or H-70 15s. I personally was always looking for the clone brand tires. The rear tires changed rapidly in that era from the 70 series into the 60 series tires that would hang out of the wheel wells that I hated.:D

  4. im thinking about going eith some 145r 15s in the front and 31x10.50x15 in the back but dont know if that tire would be to large for my gears

how bout some m/t indy profile L60-15 on rear, 5.60-15 fronts.

  8. As far as I know, Alpha-Numeric designations (like G60-15) didn't exist until 1970.

Before '70 it was all Numeric sizes, and the fatty rears were probably strictlly racing slicks or round track tires.

Also--As far as i know, the narrow Front runners that Hurst carries are a copy of a design that Firestone first released in or around 1961 (the one with the raised ticks on the sidewall)

The easiest way to really nail it is to buy a couple old issues of "Hot Rod" or "Rod & Custom" from ebay-- there are a bunch from like '67 thru '70.

    Beautiful wheels, BTW.

  9. yeah i have from mid 70s up untill the present. no one out here has these old mags and when they do have them they want a fortune. i got to thank PA GAS for the fronts tho. im going to polish them tomorrow and i will post picks if they come out good because this will be my first attempt at polishing.

  10. Cool wheels.

Just came in from a friends garage where I found a single Ansen like yours.

May I ask what they're going for $$-wise?

Am I right in thinking that the expensive 4" x 15" is the US Indy slot mag?

  11. they go for some big money, not as much as hals but they were up there.i paid around 3 bills for them. the fronts that is

Hurst 30x10x15 blackwalls in back, ribbed Coker 6.40 or 6.70x15 blackwalls up front. I would not go with the 145 radials, the Cokers would look a lot cooler.

For the era you're targeting I dig the Michelin XZX 165R15's. Or maybe they're ZXZ's??? Anyway, they're a tubed tire and the only place I think you can get them is Coker. They're not cheap like most 165R15's, like $90 a piece last time I looked, plus tubes at about $15 a piece.

  14. i have a rod action mag for 76 that has a 32 5 window with ansens and mickey thompsons front and back which i am also looking at.

  15. any ideas form the late niters????

I'd go with the Hurst 10.00-15 in rear and the 145 Michelin's in the front. You will have the look you want with the ride of the radials.

The P145 tire will work, but will be pretty small on the front. I run a P165R15 that is more available, and probably cheaper. Tubeless, too. The P285/70R15 tire size seems to be almost extinct, except for specialty manufacturers (nice stuff, but they have to make a living). I recently went to P265/75R15 Hankooks on my pickup. Not quite as wide as the P285, but within a whisker of the same height.

By the way, with a 30 inch rear tire, your rpm at 60 is about 2000 with a 3.00 gear, and about 2400 with a 3.50 gear. That is 3000 and 3500 at 90...... We math guys love these kinds of problems.....

I have 31" tires on my coupe with a 3.50 gear and it works nicely. Ran a 3.00 and it was significantly slower around town.

  25. NEEEEERRRRDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jk thanks for the info

  26. That's what I remember seeing them on, that and Torq Thrusts. I love the slots, I have some 3 1/2" myself.

  27. i like sluts...i mean slots too. i just can not find any pictures with them on

  28. Math guy?
    Cool.

I always have trouble with percentages.

Like; what percentage change will I get going from 3.70 to 3.00.
I came up with 79.8% vis a vis RPM.

So it looks like my 45 tooth interchangeable plastic speedo driven gear will go to about a 35-36.

I went to a lot of trouble to get an accurate speedo/odo in the 32 and want to do the same after the gear swap.

CC, here's a pic of my pals 29 roadster with slots.
