Of all the things I need to learn & practice; this is the most fascinating. I am really suprised at how cheap addictions are to start. A hammer made from a bat! Why are the simplest things so amazing?

My roadster deeds everything. I should be an expert when I get it done. Maybe I should become an expert before I start it.

My wife could use a set of salad bowls or headlamp buckets. Lets see how they turn out.

The faces of these home made tools need to be polished slick. Right? The end of the bat & the working face of the leaf. The reason seems obvious. It saves finishing work. Right?

This is only my second post since I've been here. It will be my last until I get my hands dirty. I'll be looking in on this thread but I wont post until I mash a couple of fingers.

I have been inspired to destroy sports equipment. Has anyone tried to make a hammer out of a bat like jh has?

jh has really started something here & obviously has a tons of skill. He has been very forth comming with his mistakes. I have seen some really nice work from others but jh is leading the pack with telling his hard lessons.

I'm really digging the links as well.

The end of the bat does not matter. It is just for roughing in a piece.I do keep my slapper and body hammer's and dollies polished. What ever imperfections on them transfer to the panel.

I have been enjoying this thread myself.

I enjoy reading and seeing different approaches to metal shaping. So I really enjoy the post with the progress pictures. That's were I pick up different ideas.

I'm not going to lie the first English wheel I ever seen was on Motorcycle Mania.I was in ahh when I saw it.I thought wow, there is a better way to do it. I have been reading and practicing as much as I can ever since.

It usually takes a few tries to try and figure out a new technique but it doesn't bother me because I enjoy the hell out of it.Metal shaping is not for the week hearted, thats for sure.Spend a couple of weeks on a panel that ends up in the scrap bin is sure discouraging.I just pick the hammer back up and start over.

  19. Check out that kid on here that made that aluminum Willys. That's the most awesome thing I ever saw. Will have to do a search for it ... Just amazin' ..

I know many of you know about metalmeet.com and some are members. I talked to Dan Pate today who is a HAMB member ( rouye56wingnut). He is having a metalmeet get together and wanted me to extend an invitation to the HAMB members as well.

I plan on being there. I'm bringing 2 e-wheels, my helve hammer, and other small stuff.

Lots of projects will be going on as well. I'm bringing a '32 ford shell, and I'm going to make a new one from scratch out of aluminum.

These meets are alot of fun. Everyone has the chance to jump in and help on a project, bring a project, try equipment. You can ask questions and learn from guys who have been at it for many years and get some help on a project your stuck on.

Here is one more link to the Metal Meet forum thread.

Hope to see some of you guys there.

If you really want to get your hands dirty, learn more then you could ever imagine or use tools you wouldn't normally have the chance to use.Hang out with a bunch of good people who have the same interests as you do.Maybe you need a hand with a part that you need to get done.

These Meets are the place to be.

I went to Uncle Johnny's meet last year I couldn't believe how much fun it was. There were seminars that were very informative to what I was wanting to learn. I was treated like family as soon as I pulled in the drive.

Do you have any pictures of your english wheels and helve hammer? I second the suggestion of attending a regional metalmeet. Two friends and I drove 6 1/2 hours last Friday to attend a weekend metalmeet, and had a ball. It was the second one we have attended in the same location, and have vowed to continue to attend. I wheeled up a pair of 28-29 A lower cowl panels with all the different curves in them.

When I get a cammera again I'll update a few things. Most of my equipment is shop built and not vintage. If you click on the picture and scroll down a little I try to type a little explaination for each picture.

I wish you could just build 1 side and then mirror it when it's done in real life. Nice work!
