Quote from C9: Like; what percentage change will I get going from 3.70 to 3.00.
I came up with 79.8% vis a vis RPM.

According to my calculations, a step from 3.70 to 3.00 gears will give about a 19% decrease in cruise rpm. That is to say, if you were cruising at about 2400 rpm, you would now cruise at a little less than 2000.

By the way, it doesn't always take calculation to figure this stuff out. As a case in point, I found that for a 30 inch rear tire, the engine speed at 90 and the rear gear coincide. That is to say, a 30 inch tire and 3.00 gear need 3000 rpm to go 90 mph. Of course, I don't often cruise that fast, but if you take two thirds of that, (in this case 2000), that is the rpm at 60. Halfway between those numbers gives the rpm for 75 (with modern traffic, maybe the most useful number of the three).

  5. Don't sweat it.
I have to pop some pics tomorrow or the next day.

I'll shoot a pic, post it and you can tell me if it matches.

What kind of car are you setting up for the slots?

  6. a 1931 tudor sedan on a 32 frame:D:cool::D. i have the 145 15s for the front went the friestone route, but i realy want matching tires for the back. i think the dirt trackers will be awesome but they are just to much mulla

  7. Good rule of thumb since I run 30" rear tires.

Runs out about 3000 rpm at 70 per now.
    3300 rpm at 80.

I wasn't much of a math student, but the job I had required a few formulas and fooling around with cars I found math to be useful and memorized a few things.

Sometimes I figure out shortcuts for some things math oriented.

    Using percentages helps.
Especially when you can figure a certain size tire is X% bigger than another simply by converting it to a percentage in your head.

Do the guys in your class like cars?
Give em a few car oriented problems.

You know, like when they drag the car stealing A-hole out their car while he's in the midst of hot wiring it and hit em with a hundred bucks worth of quarters in a bank bag right in the nose hard as they can; how many G's are generated when the A-holes head hits the pavement?

You can do the answer to this one in your head.

    The answer?

    Not enough....

  8. I'm guessing you may want a tire about 28" tall.
235/75R-15 are about that high and maybe a regular tire would get you by for a while.
That's what's on the back of the 31 in the above pic.

I did some digging through my photos, but aside from one full fendered A sedan, all my pics are coupes and roadsters.
I really like 50 Ford sedans though.

    I'll keep my eyes open.

Maybe you can do the photoshop bit if you find a sedan pic.
Several HAMBrs are very conversant with the process and they've done a few for me.

  9. Here's a couple pics of the wheel I was talking about.

Forgot to shoot a front view.
Same as yours above except that it's Uni-Lug type that takes an oval washer.

This set up gets my vote.

  11. those dont look like mine at all
my ansens say ansen sprints cast into the back along with the size sema code, weight limit and location where manufactured.

  12. Many thanks.

Not sure where all the blue paint came from.

The outside of the wheel looks like your Ansens.
I'm thinking it may be reasonably easy to find one or two more to match.
The previous owner was keeping his eyes open, but not looking particularly hard.

Apparently it was common for some manufacturers not to lay their brand on the wheel.

The pair of 4 1/2 x 15's I got a couple month back are identical except that one says, "US Indy Mag" inside and the other says 4 1/2 x 15.

the hurst tires are on radial casings, unless specifically noted. i think the fronts are on new tires, most of the backs are on used carcasses....

  17. Thanks CC.

The backs of mine are different from yours.
I searched for a Mfg. small cast mark like yours, but found nothing.

    The fronts are very similar.
I'm guessing someone may have used an Ansen wheel, changed the back a bit and used it as a mold.

A lot of the slot mags I find are Western Wheel, I believe owned by John Mazmanian of candy apple red Corvette and Willys gasser fame.
    Nice products.
American did quite a few slots, especially in the wider sizes.
    Running a pair of 10" x 15" on the 32 that I bought new in 1985.
And have a spare pair I found at the Ventura, California swap meet about 2000.

For a while I had a pair of 10" x 15" Centerlines with some big slicks on them.
Fit the 31 quite well although if I wanted the back to remain low, the rear fenders would have to come off.
They fit ok with the fenders on and the rear jacked up with a spacer under the transverse spring.
Only other thing you'd want to do there is get a spacer between axle bump stop and frame so the slicks wouldn't catch the fender on a full bottom-out.

The slot mags just in case I want to run mags on the 31 on 32 rails roadster.
Kinda fun to be able to change the looks now and then.

A few different looks for the 31.
