Nice save Jessechop! It appears there's still a few races left in the old war horse! I truly wish they were all like this again.
Great thread everyone!!! really enjoying this one.... Hey indybigjohn or anyone else that may know....Seems there's a good bit of knowledge about the "vintage" days of racing around Ohio. I have been looking for quite a while for some pics of my dads old race car. He raced back in the 40's and early 50's....all I know is that he raced a coupe. Everyone knew him by his nicknames...Curly or Whitey LaJouness out of Cleveland Ohio. His real name was Joe Bowen (there is a story behind the diferent names) But any way he had a very good record and at one point was offered to drive on a sponsered team...His car was named "The Wild Goose" any ideas???
Got forced into doing a column about the infamous "fake accident" at Soldier Field by a trivia question on Frontstretch.com. Check "Driven to the Past" on Friday's newsletter for details. Anyway, here's a photo of Norm Nelson, Sal Tovella, and Don White in a USAC race at Soldier Field in 1966 or 1967.
Found the same photo on another site, and the guy who posted it said he thought it was Asheville-Weaverville or Greenville-Pickens.
From the 70s at the Louisville Fairgrounds, Dave Kulmer of Brooks, Ky. Great on the Figure 8 before moving up to Late Models, and a good driver there as well. As late as a couple of years ago (and maybe even today) he was still active in Late Models in Kentucky...
indybigjohn, Here's something from out of your past... "Starter Johnny, slow those cars down! They're crossing that intersection too fast!"
Here's a very early shot of probably my favorite driver, one of my best friends, and one of the best people I ever met, **** Trickle.
Not a real good picture, but I was new at it, and didn't have a very good camera at the time. Jack Bowsher at Dayton in September of 1964...
Travis, I was the starter some in 1961, but from about halfway through 1962 and on until 1980, with one year and a half off when Johnny MacIntosh flagged. There were also some nights I wasn't there because I was traveling with ARCA or ASA.
This one is from the Daytonspeedwaylives.com website, from the collection of Ron Pollock. It's a MARC race (the predecessor to ARCA) at Dayton in 1954. Check out all those Hudsons up front.
The Jeffersonville Sportsdrome is located just across the river from Louisville KY in southern Indiana. It is a 1/4 mile paved oval track that has run consistently since 1947. http://www.sportsdromeonline.com/home.html For older photos of the racing in the Louisville area go to: http://www.twistedmetalvideo.com/
