I am getting ready to skin my first door which is on my '34 Ford pickup! I picked up a new skin from howells sheet metal and didn't know if anyone had any good tips? Let me know if you have any tips or tricks at all. Thanks guys!!
Jim is ticklish and Ray responds well to red wine.........................Robbie, dont get me started!
Don't try to beat it on the first time around. You should be able to do it in about 3 trips around the panel.i use lord fusor lf112/113 panel bond.It works really good and it does not set up to fast.So you have time to work it.When you are hammering it on don't swing to hard.Just tap it steady and keep your dolly flat and firm against the door all the time.Good luck.
Yes but it was funny in a dry, sardonic way...... What do you need to konw about the door skin? It gets ugly before it looks better. Is your inner structure solid?
i have sold several of these to my customers to reskin doors (that have GOOD inner stuctures) and they seem to realy like them. (plus they come with a demonstraion dvd) http://www.steckmfg.com/21890_SkinZipper.html
I don't have a lot of cash to spend so I had to start somewhere! The original door that was with my truck got stolen before I picked my cab up! The door isn't good at all but I at least have something to start with I guess.
I use about a 8 in long wood 2x4 instead of a metal dolly, It's works better & leaves less damage on the skin if any at all .
I wondered where this damn thing come from. I bought it at a swap meet for 2 bucks....and has done 40 or 50 skins for me.... but I think I need a new head.... As for putting a new skin on that 34 door, you better get a good inner structure made before you even start. If the other is good, or even descent, use it as a guide and make a whole new inner for it. But most of all, take your time. Go slow and learn the easy way. A bunch of easy taps with that dolly and hammer go alot further than having to pull that thing back apart and start over. It also keeps your blood pressure down, and gives you a reason to take some pics for a future reference or even a tech thread. Mott
Hang it from the hind legs. Use a very sharp knife. start high and work your way down to the head. But around here we spell it DEER.
