Dave was cool enough to let me come out and see the restoration of this thing as it was in progress. I'll tell you that every single cat I met out there, including Beau, could not possibly have been any nicer, more down to earth, or more dedicated to seeing this done correctly. The collection of cars there is totally accessible and very diverse but Roth cars are definitely the highlight. I'm happy that he owns it. The car turned out incredible and there really couldn't be a better caretaker. Thanks Dave!

The other stuff Aaron mentioned that is out there is also way freakin cool. I love period correct hot rods and customs but I also love other kinds of cars. There is something for everybody out there. Rich people can love cars too and you should be thankful that not all of them love the same***** you do or you'd never be able to buy anything. I work as hard as I do so that i can be a goldchainer someday. You can hate me then too but I'll have my security guards kick your**** while I drive away in an expensive car and have**** with hotties. Money isn't necessarily a bad thing guys. It's just bad when you don't have it.

I admire the rebuild of this car and the great job that everybody did.I know how hard it is to do something like that. They were luck to find the car more complete, than starting
from nothing. But I do have a problem with the charging $250 a head. They took the whole Idea of low brow and turned it into some**** bag event by charging that kinda of money.Did you see that kinda of price charged at the Windfield,Watson show? and there
were as many legends there, as the Orbitron show...........................

I suspect the $250 "price tag" was to keep out the posers and leeches.

I don't think ANYONE paid $250, just a way to cut it off at some point. The whole point seems to have been lost on this. Sorry I mentioned it.

Wow I just realized I made a huge mistake, I got invited to this thing as press and didn't go. I thought it was going to be all "Pimp My Ride" type cars.

I don't think the 250 deal will be in place everywhere the car goes. This gig was a part of a much bigger event that involved a lot of different types of people. I understand the desire to keep it affordable. Folks can still see this car and meet founders of our culture at regular car shows too.

The big L.A. Rock star treatment being laid out for these guys and Roth's car. Why should that*****? This !@#$'s supposed to be FUN ain't it?

    Yep...

A really effective way to keep the "undesirables" from getting in between the Car & the Camera...

Anyone ever have a party for 2,500 people? What if it was just open to the public and an extra unexpected 1,500 showed up and it got closed down by the fire marshal- or they ran out of food and drinks, or there was no where to park? Who's the bad guy then for poor planning then? It will make it's rounds and everyone will get to see it- I still hope to see it in person- was too busy getting my junk to the Pomona Swap Meet to go to this deal.

Here are some pics Dave Shuten sent me. I included the*****s, Slash, and Ozzy because those are all things I like in addition to bubbletops.

Thanks for posting this...interesting that no one else brought this up sooner. That puts it into a whole new light. If the owner threw a "real Roth party" some weeks before, he can do whatever he wants after that. He gets it.

As far as what Roth would have thought, I doubt there is anyone who knew him who would have ever been able to predict what he would have thought about anything. He thrived on being and/or seeming unpredictable.

Some of you guys are funny as***** complaining about people having to pay to see the Orbitron.

Roth constructed cool stuff, but he did it for PROFIT. Cars were aligned with model car builders to snag your hard earned allowance money. Cars were promoted to sell your dad tickets to the local car shows. Cars literally got destroyed from being hauled around and pimped so much.

    Roth's cars were never free

Jeez what a bunch of selective nostalgia

I knew him and I disagree with that. He was never motivated by money. He built those cars as an expression. Sure, he took the money from Revell and show promoters when they threw it at him, but it was never the motivating factor.

The intent of my post was not to question Ed's motivation though that's sort of how it comes across. Never met the man and he has a great reputation I'd never intentionally smear, apologies if it came across that way. But for the masses, Ed's car's weren't free, their imagery was promoted, packaged, and sold in various forms.

The fact the orbitron as an icon has been repackaged and sold to another generation simply seems to carry it's original mission.

I hope the fact it's part of a $250-a-seat promotion would make Ed proud.

  18. Amen. I got to know Ed pretty well and we talked about a lot of pretty deep things in life. As I posted either, those were his reasons to build what he built.

As far as his artwork and RF, that story is true. RF was the Anti-Mickey mouse.

I miss the old phone calls and the events when we could get together then go out for dinner.

He was an Icon to me from the age of 12 or so, a dream come true to become a friend. R.I.P Big Daddy.

As for making Ed proud, he's laughing about it right now.

That's cool. He might be proud or laughing at the whole deal (but he sneered a lot, too).

It was a great event, but I enjoyed the prior unveiling a few weeks earlier.
It was way more down to earth.

For all of those who did pay to get in; Rest****ured your money went to a good cause.

All of the proceeds from the the $ 250.00 admission, the Charity auction, and all of the tips from the open bar went to:
The Boys and Girls Club of the San Fernando Valley
along with the Friends and Helpers and Wheels for Humanity / United Cerebral Palsy

The Orbitron will start touring very soon for those of you who want to see the car up close and personal like.

It is rumored that the Orbitron will start a tour for the general public early 2009 starting with it's debut at the Grand National Roadster Show January 23-25, 2009 at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pamona California. For more information you can go to: www.hotrodshows.com

The SCYTHE ... Ed "Newt" Newton's new creation will start her tour this next month at the SEMA show.

    Great thread,

I like it...but it just doesn't seem right without the original fade on it.

Here it is at Starbird's Wichita show in '67.

I think the fade came later... If I remember correctly, it was done to hide some paint that was nicked up during the previous year's show circuit.
