I built my 29 roadster BECAUSE of a Bell 3 spoke wheel I got in a trade deal--so I guess the wheel was free, but the damn thing cost me thousands of $$$$!

This thread directly parallels the same question if asked about wheels (the ones wrapped in tires). Sometimes only a certain wheel GETS it, and they are rare, so you spend some money. Other times, being creative, you can build something or tweak something that exists into your vision of perfection. Sooooo, anywhere from free to "get a loan".

I was looking for a contemporary wheel with a traditional flair. I wound up with this. Cost $275.00, made in Italy, Leather grip with Banjo styling.[IMG]

I purchased a 37 Nash for the steering wheel. $1100. I took it off and a few other things, and sold the car for around that much. Never wanted the car, just the wheel.

When I bought my '40 GMC it had a rusty, cracked, milky red metalflake crager wheel in it.
This was back in '88 and even if I wanted a flake wheel in it it wouldn't have been a 13"er with no power steering so I picked up a '57 belair wheel without horn ring for $1.50 at the LB swap meet.
It was functional but the deep set put it too far into my middle age belly so I took it out and sold it (for $40 to a "friend" who was going to "turn it", and I'm sure he did,) and bought a '53-'54 Chevy wheel, again without horn ring, for $5 at another LB swap meet.
Thats what's been in the truck for the last two decades.
    Basic, cheap functional is traditional.

This one came with the 40. It's been on there for the 30 years I've owned it. No telling when it was originally put on. For me, it just fits the car and the era I'm looking for.

20 bucks to get that bottom of the line el cheapo look that I want.

100 bucks for optional 57 Merc.

10 bucks including the 53 Hudson steering column and box.

30 bucks Moon simulated wood wheel.

    50 bucks many years ago.

The 56 Ford and the Moon wheel are shown as found. All the others required a few hours of repair and paint. The steering wheel is a critical part for me because it's in your face the whole time you are driving.

I've spent about $250 on a LeCarra traditional style wheel and the adapter and parts needed to mate it to the Chrylser Tilt-N-Scope column in my A coupe.

It's a boat wheel - all aluminum - paid about $50 on egay.

  27. Dollar two ninety eight.

    37 Lincoln Zephyr wheel.

Had a couple of Lincoln restorers ask about it.
I think they're cheaper than a couple of Model A resto guys I know.

Probably gonna hacksaw it down to size and adapt a smaller diameter wheel to it.

I think around $75. or so back in 85.
(It has some real money in it now.)

Same style and brand wheel, looks fat for some reason.
Went into Pep Boys one day and found a bunch of this style for $45. or so.
Kinda funny since no one seemed to have them in stock and I'd been looking for a while.
It's on a quick release hub and has an English Penny in the middle.

  29. You can make your own adapter fairly cheap by:

Get an 80's or so Chevy wheel.

Hacksaw the spokes away from the hub.

Remove all the plastic that remains.

Grind the short spoke stubs down flush with the steel hub . . . and anything else that needs smoothing.

Use your three hole steering wheel to make a drill jig if you think you'll be doing this more than once. (Aluminum works fine for a once in a while jig.)

If not, use the three hole steering wheel to mark the hub holes.

Drill and tap the hub 1/4-20 for the retaining bolts - I like stainless standard allens.

When you get the hub cleaned up, you'll find a few factory holes in it, but all the ones I've seen so far have enough room for the three hole bolt pattern.
