John Cesareo's L/S 57. Originally built by him and his students at Western High School in Anaheim. The worn car was for sale on ebay 4-5 years ago, apparently bought back by John and was/is to be restored to the condition you see it here.

How about,out of Georgia Forest Shropshire a couple of 56 Chevrolet wagons,Florida gave us Gene Norris in the "Redskin" 50 Olds and Keith Hodge in his Huntsville Alabama based 52 Olds. We had the Smeltnik sp. Brothers From Memphis with there many different Racing Head Service 50s Oldsmobiles and dont leave out the late Dempsy Hardy with the "Crocagator" Studebaker also from Florida.
Yes ... Yess ... Yes! Been waiting to hear from the 'Killer-Early-Olds' bunch ... I'll add them tonight. There sure were some Super Stars in that bunch! The RHS guys put the 135HP 303 engine into every conceivable body!
Here is George Cureton's reply about his Pontiac. "The Pontiac was not one of Freddie Borchardts. It was one that Truppi Kling built for two guys in New York but they ran out of money. There was a feature article in Super Stock magazine on the car while they were building all 4600 lbs of it. Freddie encouraged me to buy it and he worked on the car to get it to set the record. It was fast in cool weather but a real slug in the heat. I only kept it for one season and that was enough".

Very-nice of George to clear that up -- I was impressed that he hauled that 2.3 TON load (I 'think' it was a 4-Dr HARDTOP!) around for an entire season. It certainly was an nteresting (injected 348?) car though. *By the way, I remember Freddie's Pontiac-powered early-International PICKUP TRUCK (B/G ?), but did he have (his own) Jr. Stock?

There are a lot of people who made Division 1 Junior Stock racing what it was. Maybe not "big" names but the competition is what made Junior Stock....Racing week after week developing and " flogging " new tricks. Frank Good--- Jenkins prepared 1964 Chevelle Conv 220 hp G/S at the time Frank Good---- 1957 Sedan Delivery 250 HP Fuel Injection 4 speed Frank Iaconio 57 Chev 283 horsepower 4 speed Frank won the Junior Stock title at the 70 Super Stock nationals, Frank went on to become one of the greats in Pro Stock Worrel Brothers 1950 Olds Station Wagon Record holder Burl Froelich 1956 Chevrolet, raced lower stock class car became a test bed for the development of race powerglides and convertors. Burl Froelich 64 Chevelle Conv 220 hp Powerglide N/SA Callahan and Sulc 62 Dodge 70 Dodge Challanger John Troxel 56 Sedan Delivery 225 hp with Hydro John Hoffman 61 Impala, 61 Nomad Wagon 70 Chevelle ( Two ton terror ) Al Olster Jenkins Prepared 63 Plymouth. Al went on to run NHRA's Saftey Safari Digout your old issues of Super Stock and DI and other East Coast publications. All of these people are in there. There are many more and I will post additional information when I have time........... I raced NHRA Stock class cars from 1963 to 1973. From 1950 Oldsmobiles to a F/S Amx. But what did it in for me was this. In 1973 NHRA started to use the "NET" horsepower ratings that the manufacturer was advertising. I bought a new 1973 Pontiac Ventura 350 ( pontiac engine ) that was rated at 150 horsepower. It fit in Q/SA at the time. I had a set of dual exhaust installed with cut outs,a shift kit in the 350 Turbo hydramatic and 4.11 gears. I drove it to the first points meet and set the Q/SA mph record. Did the teardown, passed, put the head back on using the same head gasket and drove the car home and sold the car 2 weeks later. I have not been to a drag strip since............

I remember counting cars one Sunday and there were at least twelve national record holders and national event winners in the field. That was around 1970. A normal field might include: Alex Jarrell, John Thropp, Tony Pizzi, George Cureton, Jay Wheatley, Charlie Hampp, Bill Cornelius, Fred Suloff, Tim Bishop, etc. If you were racing a street driven stocker you didn't have a chance.

Two more names to add to the list, cars that ran with our "In-Bomber" out of Nebraska. "Good-In-Tension" '57 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe L/S driven by Fred Anderson (driver of "In-Bomber" at 1968 NHRA Nationals for the Patrick Bros.) and "Tension" '57 Chevy 210 Sedan driven by Don Stephenson. Anderson's car exists today, re-painted and disguised as a street rod, while "Tension", which sat for years untouched and complete in a field for years, was sent to the scrap yard with a dash board full of class win plaques. -Dean
"Good-In-Tension" '57 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe L/S driven by Fred Anderson" This is from the 1970 US Nationas. Steve, Gene Calhoun drove Pontiac's which he called "Arapaho". I believe he had a 1960 when I first saw him at Capital.

Steve, The 67 Ford sedan is Dallas Kelly, the "Nova-Cain" Nova is Ken Andrews and the 61 Plymouth wagon is Burkhardt, Obert & Graham. That's all that have been identified so far. As for Paul Longnecker, I didn't even know that he was involved with a stocker until Bill sent me the pics. I'll email him and see if I can get him to join the group. I'll be posting some more unknowns so be prepared. Bob

Thanks for 'I.D.ing' the 'mystery racers, I've edited my 'Morning Update' post accordingly. It was really great to hear from 'The Southern Boyz' ... wish we could hear more from the 'other' coast! Even though they might have been a bit 'behind the curve' in the Junior Stock ranks, it 'seems to me,' there's 'gotta-be' more 'West coast' cars than .... Joe Allread, John Barkley, John Dianna, Bob Lambeck, Marv Ripes, Johnny Bartlett and Bob Dwyer! They didn't ALL drive AA Fuelers! Cheers! ...
