History Dad in his pedal car (picture)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by decker, Sep 23, 2008.

  1. I came across this a while back while going through the family album. It's my father in about 1948-49ish. I'm unsure of the make and model or the specifics of it. It kinda makes me want to build one for my daughter over the winter. Traditional of course. Toy's sure were cooler back in the day. I see the modern crap they sell for kids today and it just makes me want to puke. I know there's a few other pedal car threads here on the HAMB but this picture just didn't seem to fit in with them. My dad passed away back in 2000.

Wow! What a cool picture. That is truely a treasure. The pedal car appears to be a pre-war style (often the old dies were used post war) It looks like a 1941 Olds or Chrysler to me. For sure it's a Steelcraft brand.

  6. That's a cool picture. I have a similar one of my dad in his. Same age, jacket, hat, snow and all, apparently a Christmas present. If I remember right it was one that looked like a buick on the front and a fire truck on back. Shoot, now I gotta dig it out.

  7. Decker, if you build your daughter a car this winter, build her something FAST. D.

I had one of those as a kid, it was my most cherished treasure. I can vividly remember that thing better than I can remember anything that happened today. And I lived in a cool little town with sidewalks and friendly neighbors! Ahhh, it was like heaven.

Thats a 41 Chrysler pedalcar. It has a great waterfall grille. I searched for two years before I found one to restore. Its quite valuable. But dads are priceless.

    GREAT SHOT!
I would send Bill Smith AKA Speedy Bill a good quality copy of that photo. He has the largest collection of pedal cars I've ever seen and alot of old photos showing children in the exact model that said photo is being displayed by. He just might use it in his museum.

    Holy crap!
Where did that motor come from?
Any more info on this. We may have to build a pedal car out of aluminum as a project for panel fabrication class. And this gave me some major inspiration.

HOTRODRICK49's Dad built this for Rick not long before he passed away. It originally was built by the Welsh out of aluminum and was handcrafted. Rick found it at Hersey, I believe and told me he was going to build it as a stroller for Little Rickie. We decided to do a three part series on the build in our Beginner's Series. Rick Barba wrote the article from Little Rickie's POV. The one issue Rickie is missing is now in the mail headed his way.
God Bless you little buddy. Your Dad was the greatest and a good friend. In his memory.

Here's me in my first 4 wheeler. A year or two later I had my own fire truck. Unfortunately like all of my other cars from my youth, all are long gone. This one is probably about 1950.
Even had a DuVall type windshield. :)

When I was 13, I "customized" this one for the litle kids next door. Two tone black and orange divided by silver "53 buick" side trim (which appears to have little silver flames) and a pinstriped cat head on the "trunk". World's first customized pedalcar.
