Should be of interest to Indianans. Hopefully this hasn't been posted. Hemmings reports that a new bill HB 1040 (ominous number!) targets concield compartments & non OEM concieled items, with drug smuggling as the intended target. An over zealous cop could use it on a concieled radio or other non OEM stuff. Introed by Rep Mara Reardon.

    Original statement retracted =
I dug up the house bill this morning
    http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2008/IN/IN1040.1.html

I can see why that might spook a guy.

They find a lot of those compartments in cars, trucks an Semi's out here on the west coast and more than one probably goes past my house which is on one of the main north/south routes for drug traffic in the country.
The golf bag pocket in a roadster as the Hemmings add alluded to isn't hidden nor is a glove box in the dash or a center console cubby hole. They might look a bit funny at the locked hinged box under the carpet behind the seat in your coupe or roadster but as long as it only holds your camera, checkbook and other valuables that you want to keep secure it wouldn't be an issue. Now the solenoid operated compartment in the drivers side armrest that you have fitted for your 9 just might get their attention or the hollowed out gas tank that has a compartment for the 20 Kilos of what ever.

I wonder if they were the ones that sold a couple of impound cars with $$$$$$ of coke still hidden in them, maybe they are embarrassed that it might happen again.

It would be funny if it wasnt such a problem. As soon as the laws change, then the bad guys find a new way around them.

Okay, so let me see if I understand this...hauling drugs is already illegal. Hauling a concealed weapon is already illegal. Either will land you in the pokey.
But now they decide that, because the existing laws aren't enforced enough, they're going to go after the lock box I'm building under the front seat of my Suburban? And the reason for this would be????

Here's a novel idea: How'z about politicians stick to taking away the rights of criminals actively involved in illegal activities, rather than taking away the rights of the rest of us as we pursue our legal activities? I'm sick to fucking death of losing rights based on what MIGHT happen, while the rights of criminals and the guilty are zealously protected.

Oddrod--when you find that island, let me know. I need a lot to build on.

RIGHT On brother..Can I get an Amen?

  25. You are correct. We ourselves are always demanding the very things we complain about the most.
No matter who gets the White House, we are back into one-party rule like never before.

Watch for the "fairness doctrine" censorship act to sail thru this time, and lots more...

We have forgtotten what liberty means, and insist on our "right" to rule over our neighbor and take his "things" for ourselves. Right now the nation is arguing about who gets to restrict our freedoms in the manner we prefer. And of course- only your next door neighbor will suffer..
    Howdy neighbor!

We ouselves keep voting for our own demise. All for the false promise of easy living.

We have sold our birthright for a bowl of soup.

I am sure Indiana has a real terrible problem with hidden illegals being smuggled in vehicles to make this necessary.

I can't wait till we get back to appreciating others and the days when our neighbors are also our friends. We have it so lucky in this country to have only 2 neighbors and countries that are really very friendly to us. We don't even realize how lucky we are in that regard. A few more years or decades from now after we have destroyed that relationship, we might be wanting the old days back. Keep building fences America and passing ridiculous and divisive laws. Yeah, that's the way to solve our problems.

I got pulled over on I40, between I95 and the coast...a know drug route accross the south, ending up in a beach/college town.

This was during the last leg of my move from Pittsburgh to Wilmington, NC...

I had everything I owned in a 22ft BLACK trailer, being pulled with a LARGE black truck...I have a long black beard, probbally wearing a black T-shirt 2 rottweilers had their heads sticking out the back window...I had MONTANA plates on the truck, a MAINE drivers license, and the truck was registered in PA....I was carrying a 9mm on the dash, had a police edition spyderco knife in my pocket.

They though they just landed the mother load....I was ask to sit in the cruiser and and the cop had a drug dog which he then commanded to sniff...I had no clue at the time what was going on, but could see my record on his computer...The dog did NOTHING...
The cops face went blank...I laughed and said

"YOU FUCKERS ARE SO STUPID"...If you think DRUG smugglers look like me, you have alot to learn.

THATS the funny part...they have no clue.

Sometimes its better to hide in PLAIN sight.

Sounds to me like Indiana is a good place to avoid. The way that law is written, if theywant to arrest your ass, they can and you get to spend what it would cost to build your next project to hire an asshole attorney to get you off.
