Yes. This was Ken Veney's 71 car then dubbed the Dirty Bird. I cant recall who it owned before him. I am thinking Gordon Mineo, but that just a guess. His famed red Veney Vegas followed suit in 72

  2. Sweet story Dean. I know I was born at the wrong time.

Twin engined car in top frame is Shirley Muldowney when she and her husband raced together. Jack Muldowney was a good mechanic as he built the motors for her cars. That little injected jr fuelr job seen from the back end as it flies through the traps at San Fernando was Barry Kaplan. The ring slots, from what I was told, were more labor intensive to pack and didnt open as quick as the cross forms. But man when they did blossom, bammo your car was coming to a stop. The last car that I ever saw running the "slot" was the RED of Cerny, Lins and Moody, circa 1973, an early member of the Crager 5 Second Club. The team ran a big 16' Deist ring slot. Driver Don Moody was still utlizing the old Tony Nancy leather face mask for protection too. It was retro before we knew what retro was.

WJ in the early days. Same car both pictures, but 2 years and a full tube chassis later. Car ended up being sold to a street racer in Sweden if I remember correctly.

  17. I totally agree about the cross form chutes Dean. The ribbon chutes are just about as cool as the ring slots though.

  18. Yep, the ribbons are cool too. WCD is right about the packing time. Even with experience it was hard to pack a 16' ring slot in less than 15 minutes. All the shroud lines had to be straightend and be sure no tangles. Then carefully gather them, and the back board in the pack had rubber bands that the lines had to be tucked into to hold them neatly in place. Every time the chute deployed some rubber bands broke, and had to be replaced. Then the envelope had to be folded just so, and the pilot chute had to go in perfectly straight so the spring didn't slip off to the side. And, yes, they did pull a few G's when they opened. The one time I pulled the chute at Riverside during a 1/2 mile race at about 141, my roadster did just what Ivo's 4 engine car did with the rear tires about 4" in the air. That'll get your attention!!

Not "in motion" but an instructive photo of what a completey "windowed" fuel engine looks like. Blew the crank right out! You can see the opposite frame rail and the asphalt on the other side of the car! Otie's Automotive car, Bakersfield '64.

  24. Great info! So do you happen to know the dimensions of the chute pack for a 16' ringslot? I'm going to get to make one.

I've seen a number of shots where the chute has pulled the back tires off of the ground. What does the steering feel like when that happens?

socalmerc, I had the opportunity of a life time, to have not one, but two cackles, in the seat of the "Magicar" at this years CHRR. Bill Pitts looked after my wife and me over the weekend, and I can say that for two Aussies, it was a weekend, and an experience, we will never forget. Thank you very much Bill.
