HOW TO: ipod into hotrod without a radio

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by negativeMatt, Feb 18, 2008.

  1. Yup, as long as it has a headphone out jack then you can feed that to an input on an amp.

How sensitive is the amplifier selection to 6-volt vs. 12-volt systems?

I'm still running the old 6-volt, do I need to look for specific amplifiers?

  3. Wow, this is a decent priced and decent set-up, sold in a convenient package. This really makes it easy for someone, I'm impressed. Great find JAHEARNE.
My set-up is similar, but built years ago when there was no complete package to purchase.

ipod to MTX 6004 amp (600w, 4 channel) to MTX 3 way 6x9s and MTX 7500 series 12". All boxed with the woofer tuned to 28mHz. The only way to describe accurately is "LOUDSPEAKER" I'm very pleased with how it came out. My rear deck is angel hair and it literally dances.

Thanks for the info. By this spring, I'll have this setup in our roadster and Galaxie convert.

  5. Okay, now it's almost simple enough for me to understand. Do you need both items or is the MZ-100 part of the KIT?

This should be on geekgadget.com, NOT the HAMB!!!

  7. The fact that you even know of some place called "geekgadget.com" tells us where you belong.

    cool57, it's a complete kit.

  8. hell dudes if you wait a little longer you might be able to just use blutooth technology. i see in the new car ads that is what they use so it shoild be available to the aftermarket soon if not already. someone chime in if you got wireless info as that would really make it easy to switch your system vehicle to vehicle.

HUH? This is a very informative thread about how to put tunes in an old car without spending a buncha jack... How does this thread NOT fit this forum?

I guess single & dual frenched antennas aren't "traditional" enough for you because "they" never had radios or 45 rpm record players in their rides "back in the day". Good post irishpol. Very well constructed.

Ok, summer is near and it has become time to really think about this. I have established neither the radio in the Ranchero nor the Chevy works. So I guess I'll have to go the amp route. That will probably work out better anyways since I have uninsulated wires in the Chevy (which from what I understand causes reception problems anyways).

So, what do I need to do to get my XM/iPod to work?

Thanks guys, you're the best! :D

yeah, and after Megan figures out how to do it in her two cars, she can help me do Big Olds.:D

  12. Getting the iPod to work is easy, but I think you'll actually need some sort of deck unit to work the XM thru to allow you volume controls and such. Most XM portable players are fixed outputs and wouldn't work well thru just an amp alone. Now by chance if was a portable XM unit that had a volume control on it then we can take care of ya easy peasy and probably sponsor you a Bubba's Tunes amp.

  13. We'll take care of you too. Are you looking for something to play you an MP3 player thru?? Are you looking for the full gammit, AM/FM, CD, etc... I can help ya out if your just looking for something hidden that you can hook up a MP3 player too. Let me know what you're looking for and we'll sponsor you a Bubba's Tunes device too.

  15. Indeed, that will work with our amp. Most amps don't have a volume control and you actually control the volume with the device itself (iPod, XM, etc...). I can take care of ya. How many speakers you planning on running?

I just wrapped up my Ipod install today. Just thought I would mention to not forget to connect the remote wire on your amp to your ignition for people who don't really know much about car stereos, such as myself.

  17. Me too.
First converted the 60 Comet to an alternator from the old generator.
Headphone adapter to my hidden crossover, then onto the hidden amplifier.
Amplifier to speakers in the package tray (2) and speakers ( 1 each ) in the new molded kick panels, from Mac's.
Replaced the stock speaker, in the center of the dash, and it's still running to the original working AM radio.
That way the car still looks and works stock, but I can roll with newer tunes and good sound from the iPod.
As soon as I replace the generator, in the 62, I'll be running a similar setup.

dusting this off...I am going to do this this weekend. Is the LC-1 really needed, Or does the Ipod volume control not work when you have it hooked up directly to the amp? if if is need does it hook up as a in/out with the rca's before the amp?

If you are using the headphone output all you will need is the 1/8th inch to RCA cable. You will have volume and EQ control.

I was want to use this so I can charge at the same time. I do not understand why the seperate volume control.

  21. That cable would work great cause you wouldn't have to worry about battery or a separate charging cable. As long as you got a head unit to plug into then you're set.

I believe the separate volume control is needed because you would be using the ipod output instead of the headphone jack. The sound quality is better. I changed the knob on the volume control with a volume knob off of a old Fender amp. It fits nicely....

I wish everyone who wanted tunes in their old car would use this ipod setup. Nothing worse than a beautiful dash cut up with some new ugly headunit.

  24. Ahmen to that. That was the only one thing that made me sad in my Valiant was that the dash was already cut... I made my own amp and am going to have a local guy make me a cool plate to cover the hole. I'll post up pics when we get it all done. :)

so I do need it to run that cord and if I use the head phone out I do not?

  26. The cord you have pictured would use the fixed audio out from the bottom of the iPod.

They make another cord that still plugs into the RCA inputs, but it would use the output from the headphone jack of the iPod. This is where you would have 2 separate volume controls.

I fixed my original response cause I misread.

The cord you have pictured you would want to use with a head unit so you would have volume control.

the other cord that plugs into the headphone jack would work well with a hidden amp, but you would still have to have a charging cable of some sort.

BUT i got a new ipod nano and it no longer charges? Went back to the shop i got the plug for the ipod and rca cables. He told me i need a different one. Apple changed the pins in the new ipods. So just a heads up for you all

OK, I have read this hole thread and my head is spinning! If I can't weld it, cut it, bolt it, it's over my head! I have A '36 Ford 3/W, does this thread mean that I can gutt my stock radio head, install an LC-1 in the stock head with a stock looking knob, install an ipod (whatever that is), amp, speekers and walla listen to Pink Floyd while driving again? How about a wiring schematic, I think I could follow that! Thanks

FYI - if you don't want to butch the above cable, you can always get one of these:

    http://indashpc.org/new/accessories/cable-ipod-c.html

It's an iPod to 8-pin mini-DIN, the latter of which could be run to a Female 8-pin mini-DIN plug that's wired into wherever it needs to go.

    Just an idea...
