The wife and I drove to Columbus, Ohio last Saturday and we both noticed just how many dead deers we saw laying along side I-70 from Blaine to Columbus. Reminded me of my friend and fellow Silhouettes member from last year when he hit a deer with his kustom '54 Olds. Be careful out there and keep your eyes open.
No doubt...my Dad had just been cleared to drive after byp*** surgery and on the way home he hit a deer (n.e. Indiana) and it wiped out his truck but it proved a good test for his ticker.
Wow. Definitely did some heavy damage to the '54 Olds. I bet an '05 Dodge Neon would have been totaled ...
Right around now the Bucks are in Rut.They get kinda stupid.Lots of those does you see out on the road were most likely running from the crazed Bucks. Be careful out there. In particular at night.
There's a chart that shows car/deer accidents by state, and the belt around the Great Lakes, Georgia and Alabama are the leaders in the nation. Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin (don't know about the others) idiotically cling to the "One buck, and a special doe permit" bag limit. I think you can also take one with archery. But it's doing nothing to control the population. It's no coincidence that these states are very liberal in their gun and hunting laws. Meanwhile, the bag limit in Georgia is 10 Doe, 2 Bucks per year (one buck must have at least 4 points). And our deer population is STILL climbing! It used to be that twin fawns were amazingly rare. They're on the rise nationally, and since being in Georgia for 5 years, I've seen several pairs of twins... including the two yearlings I put in the freezer on opening day. Mmmmm....venison veal... (along with a doe, and my son shot a big doe the next day). Be careful. And as someone wrote in another post a while back, always keep your eye out for deer on the side of the road. But even more importantly, keep your eye open for THE ONE BEHIND IT. You frequently hit the SECOND deer crossing the street, after avoiding the first. -Brad
I was on my old Goldwing a couple of years ago and was just pokin' along and from behind a tree a deer came and ran right into the left side of my faring and put me on the ground. The deer never missed a beat ... !
Damn that's a crazy pic Butch! You remeber how many deer there aree round the roads here in the central coast? Have had alot run out in froint of my truck. I've never hit one...knock on wood. Crazy Story Customline Vicky...scary. A Fellow Club Member hit one in Lompoc once....On His Sportster!!!! Totally thrashed his bike and almost killed him. The Deer didn't make it. Careful out there people.
I p***ed one on the side of the road leaving your swap meet Sunday morning. Between Lanier Speedway and I-85. Think it had a really small rack.
Thanks alot friend. I was suppost to get a Tonka toy and some Hot Wheels that year. I'll remember this, pay back is a *****........
According to National Geographic Magazine last month there were more than 1.5 Million deer vrs car accidents in 2007 with 98 % of those happening in the east! Here's a funny but true story for all you country folk that know better. A friends wife works in a town hall in a small town in Maine a N.Y. city couple bought an old farm in the town where she works for a "weekend Place" the wife brought a letter of pe***ion to the town hall and asked how to file it for legal consideration. It seems she and her husband and several of their N.Y. friends thought that the Deer Crossing signs needed to be removed from their road!Apparrently the were upset that so many deer were trying to cross in those places and getting hit by motorists !!I don't have it but my friend had a copy of the letter with all personal info and town name blacked out to "protect the Innocent"this was several years ago but my local sportsmans club still gets laughs from it
a week ago abuck came off the side of the road, with its rack in the attack position. 2900.00 damage to my wifes 2005 focus, last time i saw the buck he was a 100 yards away and still moving. 3 miles so. of lacrosse wi. riverrat
Now imagine the dollar figure attached to that in vehicle damage. Not to mention hospital bills for a lot of them. Interesting that you saw one at noon Rich. I've seen more deer moving this year after 10am than I've ever seen. Andrew and I shot our four around 11am, and my buddy has had shots at three (turned out the site on his rifle is waaaay off) between 10 and noon as well. -Brad
My date and I were coming home from a Halloween party This past Saturday night when we came across a dear that was struck moment before by another motorist. The Driver was ok but, the deer had a broken front leg. I felt so bad for it. We call the local police to put him down. I'm not sure about other parts of the country but, here in NJ we just keep building strip malls, and condo's and taking away their homes. I think we need to put an end to all this urban sprawl and rebuilding existing neighborhoods and leave a little room for nature. My quick rant.... sorry but, it was a bad sight and one I soon won't forget.
In the southwest Chicago burbs they were averaging 35+ a week. I guess the only natural predator for deer is a Buick .
Exactly... People complain about "the stupid deer" but humans are the fools that build roads through their homes. If your kid chased his ball into the street, got hit by a car and killed are you gonna run around yelling "Well I guess it was my stupid kid ran into the street"... I just don't where all of the hatred toward wildlife comes from... I think more people need to rent "The Misfits".
this is the result of a medium size doe getting hit at 50 mph this happened this past summer before the Rut started. We now also need to watch out for Black Bear and Moose in this area though those are rare a moose got hit 2 miles from here last fall on the interstate.for those that don't know if you see any deer at all you can bet there are more close bye bucks (Male with antlers usually)almost always cross clearings/roads AFTER the does(females) http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/leonrenaud/deer%20hit/mailgooglecom6.jpg http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3/leonrenaud/deer hit/mailgooglecom3.jpg
it's not the habitat thats the problem,we have wiped out all the predators, so they are breeding like crazy. they are horned rats is all they are. the population is completly out of control, and every year there are fewer hunters and more people crying about the hunting. Just think how much meat it would be if the season was open more then once a year? if people didn't want them,it could be distributed to people who are going hungry. humans created the problem of an animal that breeds like crazy with no predators left,we have to fix it.
Wrong, some parts of the state may still do this one buck or doe thing but not anywhere where I go hunting. The whole southern part of the state is pretty much a herd reduction zone and is very liberal with tags and bag limits. In the last seven years I have taken 11 bucks and 31 does, all legal and properly tagged. None were wasted, every last one hit the freezer and was damn good! As a matter of fact I gave BenD some venison summer sausage when he brought my trunk lid through Fl. The insurance lobby is strong in the corn belt states and the natural resources departments use the deer as a cash crop so they are always at odds. It is a terrible thing when it happens, had a friend die after a deer v car wreck. There is not a lot anyone can do about it except drive carefully though.
my buddy hit a deer so hard a small peice of his **** and tail went threw his windsheild and was in the front seat!! sorry no pics that was befor camera phones. totaled his 78 monte-carlo.
The following link shows what is purportedly the result of a deer hit at 140 MPH. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248423
A few years ago my wife daughter and grandkid left for vacation to eastern washington in our new van, got just outside of winthrop with a big hay truck tailgating us and saw a 4 point running thru the field coming straight for us. The hay truck was too close for us to hit the brakes, i yelled "hold on" and hit the gas to the floor. The darned thing smacked right into the drivers door, bounced off and slid down the side of the van onto the shoulder of the road. Sounded like a shotgun went off inside the van. I looked in the mirror and saw the hay truck pull over and two guys jump out and throw the deer in the bed of the truck. I was so mad i wouldnt stop driving for an hour . I finally decided to stop and inspect the damages. Suprisingly, there was minimal damage, but the scary thing was the antler dent an inch below the drivers window....
Oh the irony... That's pretty much all humans do is cause problems in nature, then cause another problem trying to fix it. Nature runs just fine on it's own, it's the human sense of en***lement that throws eveything off. But speeding up when you see a deer crossing the road isn't going to stop over population... Well at least not deer over population.
well if there is nothing left to keep the population in check, then we have created a monster. nature was doing just fine when we had predators to keep the herd in check,so what happened? we killed off all the predators. now the deer have free reign to breed as much as they like with no fear, there are areas in the country where it's already an epidemic. it's not just cars, they are wiping out vegitation and causing other animals to starve in the process. anybody remember the trouble with tribbles from the old star trek? funny show with a serious message, Oh look at the cute deer! now look at the ten cute deer!! now look at the hundred!! it's already happening. there has to be a balance in nature,we took the scale and threw it out the window.
Imagine someone busting down the door to your house, moving in and then telling you that your wife and kids are annoying and in their way. Then they get rid of you and complain that your kids are unruly cause dad's not there to keep them in line...
