Here is Charlie Hampp's Mom, Mary Lou, giving Lamar Vaubel the dickens for taking the name of "her" car at Indy in 1969. The "body language" should tell you something.
I caught that earlier, thanks. During the Holiday break this year I'll get some time to scan and post most of the pix I took as a kid. I also have some great super 8 video of many stock and super stock rounds that I'm having converted as we speak and I'll post it as soon as I can rip it into a web format. -Dave
Just found this photo that will answer the question. This photo was taken at the 1970 Summernationals, the one above was taken at the 1972 Summernationals.
No that was the old Jumping Brook at hwy 33. station that looked like the Taylor ave station. My dad opened that in 1965 when I was just 15. In 69 they built my dad the current big 3 bay that still there today. We stayed there till 1975 and then move to the smaller GULF at Taylor and 33. Funny you mention that place I kept it till '81 when my dad retired and I was working then at the GM PLANT in Linden and it was just to much for me to do both.
I just found a photo of Ann Towes' Camaro that had been lost in a box of slides. This if from the WCS meet at Maple Grove in 1971.
Just a few I've got to offer up here. This one got me started. Had to build me one too. So I built my first racecar, the flat tow days, many years ago.
I don't believe the date is correct on the bottom picture. I don't think the 70 Summernat's were at York. Also, the Pontiac next to the tower is atleast a '71. The Chevelle is in S/S, which means it had to be in 72 or later. Lastly, I don't believe Charlene Wood raced in Jr Stock .
After moving to Lakeland, Floriduh, I learned that my Ft. Wayne, Indiana-based uncle used to race there in the '60s and early '70s. He'd get out of work on a Friday night and trailer his FED and run Friday night, trailer it somewhere else and run Saturday, trailer it somewhere else and run Sunday, they drive all night and be back home to work on Monday morning. After actually moving there in the very late-'90s, I'm convinced that the track owners didn't put a single dime into maintaining the facility since my uncle raced there. The track was cut down to 1/8 mile, letting the top end just go to hel...the other half of the quarter was still there, but they just didn't really bother to maintain it. Hell, I'll bet my uncle read the same scrawls on the bathroom walls that I read 30 years after he last raced there. I actually lived in Lakeland, and would travel an hour and half to Bradenton to run there, rather than run less than 15 miles away. The demise of local race tracks are not all directly linked to subdivision growth around the track, local political pressure or the value of land. Lakeland died because of its owner's malaise. -Brad
Really a great Image! We all recognize a 'handfull' of those cars, so OK you 'eagle eyes,' who can ID them ALL?
Bob I'd like to see that also. I raced against Pat for L/S CLASS almost every week at E-TOWN. Pat went to M/P when we had to go to the 3 speed trans in the '57. He was a great guy and was always there with his dad and brother. He went into the service and that was the I saw him. I often wonder where he is today and what happened to that car.
Mark, You are correct about the date, stupid of me not to have noticed the vintage of the Pontiacs. This photo was scanned from a slide that had no date stamped on the mount. It must have been taken during one of the WCS meets held there. The first Summernationals, 1970, were definitely held at York. I was there and it was a great event.
"The first Summernationals, 1970, were definitely held at York. I was there and it was a great event." Yes, I'll 'second' that! And as I recall 'at least' twenty of the cars on our 'list' were there!<!-- / message -->
Check out this vintage race car on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110306170567#description (*thanks to a new post by "copo69" on the SS/FX thread) **Also see http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/2008/05/01/hmn_feature9.html
Bob37, The 57 Sedan Delivery belonged to my Uncles Vito & John Caruso of East Orange NJ at that time. Do you realize my Uncle Vito resides in Clifton ? or are you a friend of his? Joe m.
Bob, this 57 belonged to my Uncles John & Vito Caruso. My Uncle John passed away in the 80's, but my Uncle Vito resides in Clifton....Joe M
Looks to me like somebody built a clone of the super duty cars from a 326 equipped car. I don't know about the Tempest sheet metal, but I would assume that they were built like the 62 Catalina's with aluminum front ends. The photos show rust on the RF fender. Below is a photo of Harold Ramsey's car that has been restored by Jim Stempfle. Note the lack of chrome strips on the fender "cove" and the 421 emblem on the fender. I sure hope the bidders have done their homework!
Looking for additional info and pictures of this car. Who owned it etc. I posted on the s/s-fx thread also, thought I'd try here as well. Thanks
