Tom, The way I read it I thought that you were saying that Jeff built the engine in the early 70s. By the way, Jeff has done a good job over the years racing with someone else footing the bills! Bob
I'm not looking now, but I plan on racing one more year then selling everything and building some kind of street / strip car. Bud Lefevre
I saw that Camaro too while at the Classic and had the same thought.......that thing was really nice. What happened to the Strickler car I wonder??
Jerry still has the car. He put it up for auction at Mecum and I believe that it was 400K that he turned down. Bob Rice
Here ... Thanks to 'Fast Freddie C' AKA "DOWN SOUTH RACER" is an oldie but a goodie. Stock final at 1970 Phenix Cit Ala. points race. They mighta been 'slow,' but they sure 'done good'! *National Dragster photo.
Hubert Pulley, Kinston, NC, 1970. Hubert still owns the car and ramp truck. Hubert also worked at a Chevy dealership in the early 60s and bought and raced one of the '63 Z-11 Impalas.
Bud, I remember her name. Do You? About her phone number, it is now 39 years later, you think she may have aged well? I may not want it.
Yeah, got by every one of us Pontiac boneheads. I'm a Pontiac Super Duty historian, got more info than most, and even glanced at this auction last week and it just didn't click. White car - (all SD Tempests werw white.) Previous drag car - ( @#$@#$) And the owner even made it easy for us by listing the VIN number - because the VIN numbers for the six factory made 421 Super Duty Tempests are now widely listed. The END-ALL part of this find? - The seller had it up for a Buy It Now of $4000 dollars. Someone bid $3000 dollars before anyone knew so there went the BIN of $4000. The original aluminum front end for this very car exists in Florida. Be interesting to see if the new owner finds out. uh, all I got to say...... DAMN!
Watta story -- Seventy-one bids ... $226,521.63! A few of you guys may not be able to access ALL of the questions to and replies from the seller. You reach through the back seat and turn the "tab" that sticks out of the lock. The "tab" is quite small about 1/4 inch by 1/16 inch and is located way back there on the back side of teh lock. Open a trunk on another older car to see the "tab" so you know what to look for and how small the "tool" which you can easily build to turn teh "tab" from inside teh back seat area of the car. Basicly, take a long pipe (long enoung to reach the "tab" while you are in the back seat area of teh car), and smash the end to just fit over the "tab". Have someone gently push down on the trunk to unload the lock. Put the "tool" on to the "tab" and turn the "tab" counterclockwise. Tell the person holding down the trunk to lift up on the trunk. That is the most information that you have given in general about the information you know about the car in general. So Stan has authenticated the car, has he actually seen it etc. Is there a website that shows all the VIN numbers of all the 1963 Super Duty cars? I did notice that that Champion Sticker on the quarter panels, still show the outline. I noticed the Champion Stickers, in the Yenko Website you provided. Do you have a the build date of the car. From what I could find, these cars were build over Christmas break, in December 1962. Did Stan, say why he took the Aluminum front end off the car, and put a steal one on the car, doesn't make much sense unless he was racing in certian classes. Is the interior in the car the original, or did it have buckets etc, when it was being raced. Very rare and cool car. "The "Tokyo Rose" which is in the process of being restored. Picture courtesy of Wagon Killer." Bob, I'm sure many of us have wondered about the fate of the 'Tokyo Rose' -- So, thanks for posting that image, although it sure doesn't appear to be in the process of "being restored." Sure is sad seeing it in that state. A far cry from its 'glory daze.' Its one of 'but a handful' of significant and historic race cars that truly defined the Jr Stock era. It made George happy many times. Sure made me smile -- even when I had the honor of viewing its tailights in the traps one evening at Capitol. Anyone care to $pecluate what the "Tokyo Rose" would bring, in its current state and 'properly listed' on eBay?
It's really not that bad. That pic was taken a year ago for a certial mag and a barn finds deal they were doing at the time.Bummer they stopped doing that cause had they put it in the mag in jan 08,it would of been 40 yrs since it was in an article in that mag the last time! Oh well. These things take time and money. Due to unfortunate circumstances the resto was put on hold for quite some time, but also due to unfortunate circumstances i have the money, and have the time now cause i got laid off for the winter! I bought this car in 2000-2001 somewhere in there(you would all shit if you knew what i paid for it) My dad bought it in 76-77 somewhere in there drove it for about 2 weeks or so and parked it in the garage.I do remember when my dad bought it it had a paper in the window stating it was some champion drag car just figured it was some track champion somewhere(was a pic there) but damn if i could remember what it said or what it was.I had plans for the car that did not include drag racing or anything of the sort(brand new 350 TPI sitting in front of it covered up was built for it). What did it for me was i went to a body shop to buy an old 225 buick for the demo-derby.I was talkin to the owner(same guy who sanded and primered the car lettering and all!)Well me never seeing or remembering the lettering the guy figures out who i am and starts asking about the car. and wants to buy it really really bad.Mind you he knows what it is ,he took all the lettering off! and knows i DON'T know what it is.I told him it's not for sale,he ups the offer again and again and again.NO NO NO! i tell him.(he never did tell me squat about what he sanded off the car!) So i figured hmmm, guess i need to investigate well it took a while and figuring i had 2 time slips from cecil county drag-o-way from in the glove box and little other info, i started doing searches on-line the rest is history! Thanks Bob Rice!< photo albums helped me ID the car to a T! And speculate away i have no idea.
Mark, Her name was/is Melainie Vincz. Just for the hell of it, I Googled her and found that she had done some modeling, TV shows and movies. We all probably saw her and never connected her with Indy. BTW, she was born in Indy on Dec. 7, 1949
Well, certainly not the quarter Million that 'Item number: 110306170567' brought. I doubt if you have the orig 265, Hydro etc, so for the 'shell,' 'methinks,' maybe 4-to-6 K. By the way (RE: "I bought this car in 2000-2001" followed by ... "My dad bought it in 76-77." You bought it from your dad? Thanks, ... Steve
These original pictures I have came from Spence Lyons. He gave me a pack of stuff when he came up to visit and see the KB/REYNOLDS Stg2 test car that I restored. He left with tears...it was really someting to witness with all the old stories of Lennie "Pop" Kennedy. Spence was the sales manager for Reynolds at the time and was friends with Pop.
