Above car is a Jerry Malloy (Jim's brother) built car. One of 3 similar Uprights built during his "wedge" Super Modified production Driven in the 70's Rocky Mountain / Northwest pavement series by Tom Naylor as the #15 Coors Special II and by his Dad Glen as the #00. Orig small block powered it was later changed to the 250 inline 6. With it's round bottom and very narrow frame it was almost a retro sprinter when it was constructed. I had a great time putting it back together. And still more fun chasing down the history of it. For more on these cars and this era out here in the NW, lookup this site. Canadian American Modified Racing Association. Keep up the great posts. OB

Welcome oldebob, good to see another from the left side of the map.
That's a great looking Malloy you have.
While Jerry Malloy was best known for his roadsters, he also built about every kind of oval car around, from coupes to uprights, like yours, to late models and they were all fast.

Thanks for the advice boys especially the part about bidding high and bidding often. Apparently this is not a well kept secret, because everyone was doing it. A phone bidder was snapping up most of the good stuff like the Red #2 midget with the HAL conversion 4 cyl. It went for 8,000. Another midget with a Ford V8 60 found the same home for 6,000 and the car advertised as an old AJ Watson sold for 3,500; obviously the car was not as advertised.
It was a double frame rail monster about 4 inches too long. The only thing of value on it was the magnesium front wheels with ribbed Firestones that were in pretty fair shape. I've tried to attach a few more pics but haven't been able... something about a security code missing???? I'll try the pics later

I guess Josh has his finger on the pulse of the vintage race car market as he nailed that 8k price. :) Way above my pay grade thats for sure.
Were you able to score anything else, parts and such?

No... most of the stuff was sold in lots that included the car. I was going to try to pick up one real nice Halibrand rear end, but it was never placed for bid by itself... I had fun imagining the time when all this equipment was brand new racing with the wind.
    Blessings my friends,

That was my guess as well, 57'-59'..

Great shot! The pace car will tell the tale unless some one recognizes a car, and a specific paint scheme for that year..

Which isn't out of the question on here!!:D:D

Between Roy and Mac we'll know the names and age of the people in the stands as well as the racers and there helpers!

Dwane Wolf sent me these a while back. I just found them again.

This is said to be a barn find out of the Chicago Area. I will say this, It's as complete as they get! It's super charged, and has a NICE set of RARE front tires.

What ever the story, It's a GREAT car!!

    Ellfehell,
looks like 1955 to me. Blue 81 is Rodger ward in the Central Excavating car started 11th.

I think the red and white car in front of it is Jerry hoyt in the Walcott car.

    Orange car is Tommy Hinnershitz.

The memory base we have on this thread never ceases to amaze me. The comment Josh made about Mac and Roy isn't as much exaggeration as you might think. No matter what you put on here, somebody somewhere will not only know what it is, but who built it. I love it.

    Love that "Indian Gas" Fronty.

Josh, I think they got the graphics just right on that one.(Although when it was built they probably would have said,"WTF is graphics ?")

  22. That car is so cool, it almost looks staged. I mean there is no way in hell I could ever get that lucky. That shape, history, and the lettering to be "just so". If I discovered that car, I would have to call a heart doctor, and I don't have heart problems!

The following photos are from Jim Graybeal, sent to him by Jerry Castor, whose family owned the car featured. The first shows the car in April of 1966. It's a Konstant Hot chassis copy except for where the engine hangs out. The original had top frame tube which required removal of the headers before the engine could be pulled. Karl Kinser even had them build one for them because the big block Chevy fit the frame.
Norm Handt, service manager at the local Dodge dealer in Columbus, Ind. at the time, has his hand on the tire. He was a former drag racer who got into sky diving, and Castor converted him to sprint car racing by taking him to a USAC race at Eldora. He said when he saw Jud Larson take A.J. Watson's car into the first turn and never let up, he was hooked. Good engine man, still lives in Columbus and attends Oldtimers get-togethers. Jerry is in the car, and the other fellow is Ken Sexton, his best friend from Columbus High School (now Columbus North). Jerry said Ken left us in a motorcycle crash in 1969.

This photo was taken four years later at the old 25th Street Fairgrounds half-mile track in Columbus with Buzz Gregory at the wheel. The car had a 426 wedge head Mopar Ramcharger with "skeleton" heads and a Racer Brown roller cam. Jerry said it had Enderle injectors and was dry-sumped, but had the stock rods, crank, and pistons, with lots of horsepower.

This photo was from the cover of a Bloomington Speedway program. Butch Wilkerson is in the Fleetwood Chevy on the inside, with Larry Miller in the 'Big Bertha' owned by Karl Kinser No. 22 in the middle, and Bobby Black in the Castor No. 51 on the outside. I remember seeing 'Big Bertha' smoke the field at the big Columbus half-mile one night, and Bobby Kinser running second in Chuck Amati's car. Chuck was having trouble with the car and put Kinser in it. Bobby came from the rear but couldn't catch Miller, and told Amati, "It feels all right to me."

Well, I have FINALLY reached the end of this thread....what an EXPERIENCE!!! I carefully took over a week to read it thoroughly. I have learned so much!!! My life in open wheel is like a full circle:
-Dad crewed for Tom Cherry in Muncie, IN
-Went with Dad to the Little 500 at Anderson for a ton of years!!!
-Dad took me the the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1963 when he was a test engineer for Delco (I cannot remember this!)
-Dad built Muncie Dragway in 1958 (NHRA)
-Dad took me to Winchester for the first time (1964?)
-I picked up more used paper cups and used condoms than any white kid on the the universe...(1963-1972)
-Dad sold the track (still in operation)
-started my first Sebring 24 Hour race as a driver (1993)
    -Started BMW's factory Firehawk team
-Founded Dreyer & Reinbold Racing over several beers with Dennis Reinbold (Pop Dreyer's grandson) with entry in the IRL
-Won our first race in 2000 at Disney
-Ran the Historic Stock Car series for about 4 years (wanker)

Been involved in so many ways, but the guys on this thread are my TRUE heroes. You guys are the reason that I have been able to experience so many GREAT things in my life. I look up to every one of you...thanks for keeping guys like me so invigorated..YOU are the reasons why this thing keeps going!!!!

Have a couple of hot rods, a Dreyerette, a Half midget Moss, my 2002 Indy car, and a wonderful family who (somehow) understands my disease.

Thanks to ALL of you who have posted during this thread. I have learned so much!
    Eric
