So.. these guys think this is the worlds first "Street rod" or "Customized Car" Well, NO. Sorry, but there is documented pictures of what is thought to be the first "Speed Shop" with a speedster and a full fendered touring car that is slamed with a chopped windshield, in Nebraska (I think) in the early 20's

But!! This car is DAMN INTERESTING!! and it was WAY ahead of its time, if it was built in 1932.

The guys working on it remind me of when I get drunk and try to fire up stuff in my garage for my buddy's that hasn't ran in years.. (Usually works!):D

Check it out, I didn't find it anywhere else on here.

That was pretty cool.. I wanted to hear it run dammit!!

  3. Very impressed with the cars....not so impressed with the overall level of work ethic. I'll bet the fenders of the Dusenberg took some grief...only saw a couple pieces of paper around the exhaust to protect the paint. Cobbled up wiring on the high dollar Madam X Caddy. Gorilla attack with a punch & hammer on the Ford's valves?
Nice that he and his Daddy have deep pockets to play with high dollar Antique & Classics.

  4. I liked the gys line---" When I fixed it the last time"
Guess he didn't fix it right !!!!!

I always heard that the "first" hotrod was a T roadster that some kid stripped down in about 1917 or so.
There was a T roadster at the Alter boys show that might have been it. I rememebr reading about it a few yrs ago & they even mentioned his name & locale. But being raised in the 60's all that shit seems to have faded away!!lol

I'd like to see some good quality photos of "The First Street Rod" and a run down on what the parts are from. Hood looks a lot like an Auburn item fron the early 1930's. Anyone know what the body is from? Dale has one of the nicest early motorcycle collections, didn't know he was into cars too.

Some neat cars but I get the idea these guys have a lot of money to play around with and dont worry about if they scratch or short out something.:(:(:(

I've heard that story too. It's hard not to think that Someone didn't Imediatly start "improving" cars as soon as they were invented..

Think about guys like Harry Miller. Or John gerber?

John Gerber stripped a 1912 Chevy down, built his own overhead valve conversion and went racing in 1919. He even raced the Fairground Mile circuits with the original wooden wheels the first couple times! Not the first.. but well before 1932!!

Wasn't that car on "My Classic Car" a few years ago. I'm pretty sure it was. It's very cool.

I think this is called the First Street Rod because it was modified for the street and not the race track.

Well, this guy and his dad sure do have an interesting collection of stuff. Anyone who has a Duesenberg together with a Madame X Cadillac that he can mess with is certainly way above my station in life. I just wish that he would have stepped up just a tiny bit to get a better lighting system. Dang, I really wanted to see what he was talking about, but it was nearly impossible.

If anyone has further info on the Clobes Special, it would be nice to know more about the car. Whether or not it is the first street rod, I believe, is irrelevant. More interesting would be the car's history and what was done to the car. It looks very interesting and it would be nice to "get the rest of the story".

Someone must have clear photos of this car! I'd like a brakedown of what the car was based on and all the modifications.

There's always gonna be debate on what's first etc...
I thought I didn't pay due attention to safety, but even I wouldn't be chompin' on a cigar right where my pal had just been spraying something volatile, which was 'dripping out the bottom',

What the hell was that all about? Why would you tape that? Certified Harley mechanic who doesn't know to hook up the hot side of a battery BEFORE hooking up the ground.

Wheels through time is an great place. I've spoke with the owner sveral times. He is an awsome dude.

  21. First of all, after all the shots that are taken here, the owner of this place is a very fascinating guy with an encyclopedic memory about all the vehicles in this museum. An amazing collection of motorcycles and autos in one of the prettiest settings in the Smokey Mountains, Maggie Valley, North Carolina. This is one site that should not be missed. The little car is very interesting, with all of the modifications and the history. It was used by a musician in the thirties to tow a little travel trailer to his "gigs". The owner of the car wound up in a nursing home and the car was stored inside his home. The trailer still exists and I don't know if it has been restored. At the time I was there, the trailer was for sale, but that has been quite a few years ago.
I have lost contact with the owner, but my offer stills stand to letter and stripe the delivery cycle, but he better hurry, I am getting old.

Some of you guys are going to hate where these pictures come from....... Ol Skool Rodz did a 2 page article about it in July 2004! And you guys call yourselves traditional hot rodders?!?!?!? LOL . (That was sarcasm)
I'll scan the article and post it shortly.

    ??????

    ??

I think what's really new here is that they are taking great License in proclaiming just what made a hotrod a hotrod and what makes that car a 'street rod' as opposed to a hotrod.

(I bet we'll see a huge 6 page spread proclaiming "The World's First Street Rod" in street rodder magazine reeeaal soon)

"I lost the keys so I put in a toggle switch"

I guess shnit happens even to the best of us?

...But really, who cares when the first "Street rod" was built, they are all hotrods to me.

Just used as a segue Moe...

A license for street use, along with that street use is the only defining thing streetrods have in common with each other and by definition, what can make a "hotrod" also a "streetrod."

    Is "Limefire" a hotrod?
    Is "Limefire" a streetrod?

Is Ivo's T a hotrod? It was drag raced...
Is Ivo's T a Streetrod? it was driven on the street...
Is Ivo's T a "Movie car" I've seen it used in movies...

    Parallel for instance:
Hippies never existed because anyone claiming to be one reaked of being a "Phony Hippie" (like Sonny Bono) and anyone who fit any of the going definitions denied being one.
That's similar to all you guys driving your "hotrods" around town and across country, ON THE STREET, deny driving "streetrods"!

hey hand me that "cresent wrench" so i can take out this spark plug...WTF? dont they have tools?
    this is halarious

"I used a punch last time to close the exhaust valves..let see if it will work this time"..OMG! I thought this car was supposed to be something "special" why would you treat it like that?

Im going to have a drink now and go sniff some starting fluid, and smoke a stoggie..any one with me?..all while hooking up my electrical system..yeah thats the plus in all this fun!..you in?

    Interesting car. But...
I don't know who these guys are. They might the biggest in the business but I tell ya... they AIN'T gonna work on any of MY stuff! Ever!
A punch to the valves, ether to the max (great way to dry out the cylinders), battery attack?
Sheesh. I thought "I" was slack.
He sanded the points and said that doing that sometimes kills the spark. CLEAN THEM AFTER.. twit!
I'll stand behind you while you ether up that thing and try some sparky-stuff. WAY behind you!
Ok. Done being a grump for a while (until the next time).
I can't see this post going smoothly.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this is the way it's done and I'm all wet.

  29. You would think if that guy was such an "expert" on something,he would make sure the car starts BEFORE filming that! At least when Jay Leno is shown on a show, with one of his cars, the car starts and they drive the car,LOL....

My Uncle's first car was a twenty- something Chevy he bought in 1931. He and my dad took the fenders off and drove it around Arkansas for two weeks, before the Sheriff made them put them back on! Streetrod??????

I started this post cause I knew it would be a Teeder-todder discusion..

I'm glad to hear the guys that own it are cool, the fact that it's not restored tells me that there all right.

I just liked that fact that I'm not the only one out there that gets "goofy" sometimes and try's to fire off something that hasn't ran in a while and didn't run worth a shit when it did! It seems like some of our best "Hot Rod" stories come from late night antics like that.

Weather or not it's the first... There's no way of telling. First what? There's to many varyables.

I just wanted to share an interesting car with y'all, and a funny video we can all get a kick out of. The cigar in the fuel filled engine compartment CRACKS ME UP!!

Oh.. And it could have been on the cover of Ol' Skool Rodz with neon lights pointing to it and I'd have walked by. Just not the "right" stuff for me in that rag. ..Nice people, but it just misses.
----150" wheel base belly draggers with EVERY trinket in the garage bolted to it, are NOT traditional.

    ------------------------------

Bottom line: Cool car, funny guys, neat piece of history.
