I'm sure if they still make this stuff for another industry or purpose, it's called something other than "Spaghetti"... Looks like long plastic "spirals" that wrap bundles of wire together (or cover fuel lines?).... not just the plastic tubes they have now, you can see the wire between the spirals... Anybody know what they call it now? Or it it's still made? This is from the March '61 Customs Illustrated. pg 26
you can get that stuff at menards in the electrican section, we use it for controll wiring boxes to keep stuff routed neatly, comes in kind of a clear milky white or black, the spirals look a little thicker than the stuff in the pictures though !
Most hardware stores stock it in a few colors. The GoodGuys vendors sell it in everything including pink and purple!
We used to buy that stuff in bicycle stores, don't know if they still have it, though. All different colors!
AMEN! It was ugly back then and it never grew on me. The purple, red, black and yellow plastic crinkle wire wrapper so popular today is ugly too. JMHO
The newer thicker stuff is called "spiral wrap" Panduit makes it a**** others. Not period as others have stated.
you can get the thinner stuff from aircraft parts suppliers like aircraft spruce. it's thinner because it's used to wrap smaller aircraft panel wires,it's also lighter and eaisier to work with. the stuff everyone says is ugly is the much heavier and thicker stuff.
when i find some camera batteries i will take a picture of one next to the other. you have to look at how thick the spec is on the wrap too.
Ok, they might be different, but not nearly as different as the stuff in the first pic in the post. Which is also ugly...but that's ok, because ugly is an integral part of late 50s-early 60s show cars, for the most part
the stuff you are looking for was probably originally for wrapping radio wires in the 50's,back when people used to build radio kits and things.
if you want it to look authentic that old, you also can get new vintage looking cloth wrapped wires. a lot of radio restoration places sell it
here, these folks might be able to get you what you want, not only the wire, but the vintage looking wrap as well. I see a lot of modern built rods, with all period looking parts, but with modern looking pcv wiring. a lot of places make the new stuff that looks authentic. http://www.ynzyesterdaysparts.com/
I roll with painless for my loom, works the best and looks 10 x better. that spiral stuff about made me PUKE. YUCK
The stuff your looking at was originally used on old strait phone cords. Before retractable. I found a box of packages at a flea market years ago and bought maybe ten packages. Each package held maybe two feet. I gave two packages to Von Franco for his first Kookie Kar Klone. I haven't been able to find any red and white since. I wish I had bought all of them. Gary
I think I found a subs***ute... and seeing as I'm in printing, it was right under my nose: http://www.spiralbinding.com/selectproduct.cfm?subCategoryCode=PLASTIC%20COIL%20SUPPLIES
I re-did the wiring on a 1939 flathead side-valve, and I wanted the whole thing to look period correct, I used cloth wire but I needed some way of looming it, but I wanted you to be able to see the expensive cloth wrap so I bought some long springs at the local hardware store and stretched them out, they have the same look that your posted, and they are cad plated so they look period, Plus!!! when they rub through the wiring they will ground out instantly! Causing the whole bike to burst into a ball of flames! Undoubtablely when I'm riding it! But hey! I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Oh and if you really want to get tricky and make the wiring look period perfect cover all the regular electrical tape with the cloth sports tape they use on hockey sticks!.... I know.... I'm sick
OK, I didn't want to wait to get some of the Plasticoil (as it's called) from that co. I mentioned, so I went to the local dollar store and picked up 3 High School Musical 2 spiral notepads, with black spiral binding. I snipped the bent ends off and "unscrewed" them from the pad. I paused for a second to admire the super macho man's man Zack Efron on the cover before I threw it away, then I used the coils to cover the wires and mounted them to the firewall... 33" for $3 I'll get some pics and post them here Monday or Tuesday... I'm off to Homestead tomorrow!
Mcmaster-Car also has the painless style (its the same stuff). It is the stuff G.M. used from 90's on up. Couple different diameters Its a little shiny out of the box. I toned it down by shooting it with flat black Krylon plastic paint for the stuff that will show underhood. Makes it look like cloth!! Easier than cloth because it is split and the bundles can be added to later. Lots easier than snaking wires through a solid sleeve of cloth.
