Well the wife and I are looking into possibly moving to NZ. I will need to find work and a reasonable place to live. I obviously have skills related to building hotrods but also have other marketable skills to hawk for food.
Either PM me (I have questions) or oopen this post up for discussion.

What's the possibility of bringing my hotrods down there?
Is there a limit of how many?
    What about registering them?
    Taxes?
    Cost of living?
    etc?

  2. Its my understanding that its very hard to emmigrate to NZ. You might want to look into that first.

    Hey,

I am not a Kiwi, but i can vouch for them. I lived on the North Island for about six months. This was about 4 years ago, at that point the cost of living was about 20% above what it is here at home. The economy was sound and seemed to be lots of work. I dont know about now, the economy was sound here a few years ago too... not so much anymore.

Great people, beautiful country... two tips - take your fishing rod, the trout streams are amazing and make sure you travel around and see both islands before settling, there is something there for everyone, if you want rural you can find it, if you want metro you can get that too.

    Good luck,

    JD

Emmigration to NZ is not difficult. We all had varied backgrounds and had no problems getting work Visas. They have several different types available depending on your vocation.

    Hey,
I'm sure we would be happy to habve you here but you would need to check with the immagration folks first, check out http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ for the details on that, if you can get through that getting cars over should be easy enough and as personal effects they should be tax free, I work in shipping so can help you out if it comes to that.
Registration wise we are tough on rust and modifications need to be engineer certified locally etc depending on what you are looking at bringing down it might be harder or easier but its all do-able.
Our taxes are pretty high vs the USA but then we have healthcare etc largley provided by the state, income tax is a sliding scale depending on what you earn.
Cost of living depends on where you are, housing prices vary around the country as do options for work depending on what you do.
I found recently that for instance fresh fruit and veg seem to be easier and cheaper in NZ then California for instance (hell I'm buying California grapes at about dollar for dollar what you pay in California with our dollar at under 0.60 US).
What sort of work would you be lookign for ?

This is the first place you should look, to get an idea of what restrictions apply to permanent immigration ...

    http://www.immigration.govt.nz/

Wheelless would most likely have been here on a working visa, as opposed to permanent residence.

You can bring in hot rods and they can remain left-hand drive, but will need to be certified to local standards before they can be registered here.

Not sure if there is a restriction on how many you can bring in, there is a restriction for NZ residents importing cars (something like 1 per person per year), but the rules for immigrants may well be different.

Hey Simon, haven't conversed with you since the HAMB drags a few years ago.

I've been checking out some of the NZ sites concerning immigration.
Haven't found any age restriction, yet.
I'm presently a software developer, but have experience in professional photography, home and hiway construction and of course, building hotrods.
So far I'm a little partial to the Timaru area.
Can you tell me more about that?

you might be in Timaru ;o)
Nah seriously its not a bad part of the world down there a little cool in winter and summer can be pretty warm and dry, Christchurch is only a short drive up the road and you can find most of what you need there if not in Timaru, there a track with circuit racing, pretty close to some ski stuff for winter, the ocean for fishing/surfing etc and penguins just down the road in Oamaru.
Good rodding scene down there too.

That seems like a long time ago now - we are planning to come back next year for the Lone Star roundup, so may catch up with you then if you are still there !

Software developer would probably be a good job to come in with - there has been a shortage of them recently (although that may change as we are in a bit of a recession here at the moment).

Here is a good IT employment web site to get an idea of what is out there ... http://www.seek.co.nz/it-jobs/

Sorry - don't really know anything about Timaru, except that there are a couple of hot rod clubs there and the older one just celebrated it's 40th anniversary a couple of weeks ago ...
