  1. About the only time it has bugged me is when I'm trying to change lanes on the freeway and the car next to me keeps trying to stay alongside of me, waving and taking pictures. I wave and smile and then gun it to zoom past them so I can change lanes.

I think you'd have to be kind of stuck up to get mad if your nice car draws attention. Just smile and roll with it. If you don't want any attention, drive an old beat up beige Toyota sedan, and for sure nobody will ever look at you.

  3. Go with the flow and enjoy it.
As Buzzard says, "spread the word:cool:"..... in a positive manner....it will be to our advantage in the long run.
I often take the time to talk to folks(even the ones that say that they used to have a Model A, just like that:rolleyes:)...the interaction made thier day a little better, and if I have the right attitude, I come out as a winner also....what a deal.

....Or, I guess a Camry might be in order:eek:

  4. I like the attention most of the time. An 18 wheeler passing me in the inside lane with the air horn blowing is annoying.......except......once on the way to Mississippi for "Cruisin The Coast" I heard the air horn, turned to look only to see 2 bare breasts with a thumbs up either side pressed up against the passenger window of the truck!!!!

Good posts in this thread. From what I've found kids aren't really interested in my car, but thats probably because its not finished. When I was little I never looked at the rusty cars either, lol

I haven't been flashed yet, again that may have to do with the fact that my car looks pretty ratty on the outside.

I do hear good stories from the old timers now and then, its cool to earn the respect of people who were there in the glory days.

But if I hear anyone say the word "pimped" one more time I'm going to tell them that the "pimping" around here usually only happens after dark on the wrong side of Moreland or Ponce.:D

I usually don't mind it. I really like it when someone guesses what i'm driving correctly. Everyone thinks the Willys pickup is an old Power Wagon... and this weekend some guy asked if it was a Jeep.. I said yes it is... then he asked if it was a Toyota Jeep... WTF? I know they had Land Cruiser pickups back in the day... but Toyota Jeep? Geez. I get a lot of the "when are you going to paint it" comments but I just ignore 'em.

I did have a girl flash me once in an old '69 F100 she was riding shot gun in. I nearly blew up the Willys flat 6 trying to catch up with 'em but had to let 'em go. :( I've never wished for an overdrive so bad in my life LOL... DAMN YOU 5.38 GEARS!

The old dudes like the blue truck.

when I start telling most people "its an old hotrod, it was built around 1961, these guys in this car club got together......." they look like they dont care and usually walk away while I'm still talking.

its like most people are waiting for me to say it was built on some T.V. show or something...and seem let down.

For the most part it is cool that people check out what ever old car I am in. It does piss you off that 9 out of 10 feel they have to point out some sort of flaw or something they would have done different instead of just enjoying seeing something different. ...maybe my cars just aren't nice enough.

haha, crap, youre on to me!

as said earlier i have met tons of people because of my cars, most people say "nice impala" but i had an old lady know that it was exactly a 62 buick wildcat, she said her husband had one a few years back. anyway, yeah sometimes it gets annoying, but i'm a pretty chill guy and i have no problem lifting the hood or chatting while gassing up. the 22" wheels, and stereo system comments just make me glad its MY car!!!! haha, :D

I've never had a problem with anybody at any age wanting to see and or check out my car. I guess a flat black 55 chev. with tunnelram out the hood kinda gets their interest up. Once in a while you get some asshole that would do this or that to it "IF" it was his but for the most part people that want to see it or ask questions about it are car people too and I think that's cool. I've even had 80 year old women ask me what year it was and when I tell them they say something like my late husband had one years ago and they fondly remember that and go away smiling.

A long time ago I had an elderly couple standing by my 34 coupe when I came out of the grocery store. (it was my daily driver) They told me the first car they ever had was a 1934 Chevy Master coupe. Thats exactly what I had. I could see the good memories it brought back. Lots of good encounters with a few kooks. The one though that changed it all for me was when leaving the OK nats I was sitting at a stop when a mom slowed to show her kids the old car. I could see her pointing at me with three kids faces in the windows. The car behind them did not see them slow down and totally rear ended the minivan. It was crunched into a big wad. No one was killed but the kids and the driver of the other car were seriously hurt. That was something that almost made me quit this Hot Rod thing.
    That was 10 years ago.

Try being a chick in an old car! Everytime I'm at a gas station or a store or at the park I am interrogated about whatever I'm driving and why I'm driving it and if I even know how to work on it! :D A lot of people tell me I should have left my Chevy stock or the way it was locally in the 70s. Talk about a way to end a conversation! Denise (HRLC) handles these gas station interrogations A LOT better than I! :D

On a positive side though I do love when a kid points out my car to his 'soccer' parents in their Honda mini van. I always smile and wave and if I'm stopped chat with the kid. I figure if I can keep one kid from buying a Prius my life will be complete!

Like a lot of guys have said above though, I'm so used to driving an old car so much I'm desensitized. I wonder why people honk and wave most times. Boy we're lucky!

I think the coolest was the other day when I pulled into the parking lot of a large chain store here in town. As I was getting out this older lady (maybe 70) pulled up and complimented me on the car. She said she saw me in the rearview mirror and decided she would follow me until I stopped because she wanted to see it better. Then she tells me that years ago she also had a 41 but hers was a convert and it was chopped. Now how cool is that that a gal back then owned a chopped top convert. She wasn't bs'ing as she was very knowlegeable about many of the changes on my cpe. If you don't like the attention your car gets you shouldn't be driving a hot rod/custom. Is it always the best? No sometimes it can get a little annoying. But the good far outweighs those few times.

Of course we all like it, but it also depends on who's talking to you, the situation, and what you're doing at the time. Like repoguy said, the mullet tweeker at 7-11 can go away, but I will take time to talk to the old guys. It's kind of cool to see the old guys remember back 50 years to their youth.

If I'm trying to get gas and I'm in a hurry, it gets annoying.

I also get really tired of "Nice Chevy dude! You should paint it red!". Dicks.

Ok the boob reference has just made my day! ROFLMAO

I had an old hearse that people used to call the "death car". It was fun to go to the market and have people cross themselves and give a 20 foot berth around her.

I did, however, hate it when 8 out of 10 people who weren't afraid of the car always wanted to buy it. "How much for the car?" --- when there was no for sale sign or any indication that it was for sale.

I remember telling one guy I wanted $40k for my hearse (LOL, ya right). :D

I generally ask them if they've seen one of the super rare 1955 mustangs. That generally answers any questions I might have had about whether I want to continue talking to this jack-hole or not. Sadly, I get alot of "yeah, my grandfather had one" or some BS.

  22. Its kindof annoying when old people would gather around my 1950 to compliment it AS I WAS BROKEN DOWN, I'm like "Yeah its pretty cool WHEN IT STARTS," and I have to attempt to hide how pissed off I am and be friendly to this 65 yr old. ha.

  23. JEEZ, get over it man. Be glad people take an interest. You can't expect everyone to be car smart. Ya just take the interest and compliments with a grain of salt. I know lots of people that don't know dick about old cars, except they love to see them out in public, in person, with a "regular guy" driving it.

Every time I am at a gas station, or where ever, I usually get the story, from some older person, about how they used to have one just like mine, back when they were young.
Makes me think there must have been hundreds of Kermit green, 51 chevy coupes, in my town years ago!!!

Also love it when the younger crowd asks, when are you going to pull the 6, and put a smallblock in it.

Also like when someone asks, is that still got the flathead in it???

    What he said;

We all like the attention, if somebody tells you he don't, he's just saying that to get attention. ;)

Comments, good or bad, are fine with me. If I didnt want to take time to talk with people at gas stations, stores, etc., I wouldnt drive the vehicle.

the best non-sequiter ive found is to simply baffle em with bullshit. use lots of technical terms, make shit up,use lots of numbers and ask them un-answerable questions. in a friendly way of course. usually works great. only bothers me when im in a hurry though.

  28. Some nights when I'm feeling down, I cruise the streets. It only takes a couple of thumbs up & the sound of glass packs to give me a high. Sell this to the shrinks.....

i love it when people dig my cars.
i'm just like them.... i also get stoked to see an interesting car on the road.
only thing that is sometimes tough is when im riding motorcycles, some folks will occasionally scare the shit out of me when they honk their horn at me.

For the most part I enjoy it, especially when they grin and wave during the rush hour grind, I get a lot of comments as to why I'd drive a "classic" every day.
Bad experiance: A guy and his girl were pacing me giving me thumbs up and trying to ask about the 39 I was driving. Tried as hard as I could but I couldn't get them to notice a large truck had stopped in their lane, it wasn't preety.
