1929 Lee Bible in the tri-motored "Triplex" at Daytona

The Triplex weighed seven tons and was powered by three 12-cylinder Liberty Aircraft engines, capable of producing more than 1,200 horsepower.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lee Bible was killed in a pre-record land speed attempt March 13, 1929 at Ormond Beach, FL.

This photo is before he got in the car for his last ride.

At the wheel of the car that killed him.

    Just before the crash

Crowd gathered around wreckage that killed Lee Bible.

On his first run, Bible was clocked at 186 mph, well below the record of 231.44 mph held by Englishman Major Henry O. D. Segrave in his Golden Arrow.

On Bible's return run he was clocked at 202 mph. Shortly after the traps the car swerved, presumably because Bible released the accelerator too quick.

The Triplex crashed into the dunes and rolled, coming to a stop 200 feet further. Bible was thrown from the car, killing him instantly. The Triplex flew into cameraman Charles Traub, also killed instantly.
