Definitive S-10 Frame Swap Vehicle List

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by Abomination, Jun 25, 2008.

  1. Seems to me that the mounts that would adapt a V-8 in an S10 won't always place the motor in the just right spot for a frame swap. You must mock that sucker up! In fact, a lot of exhaust and steering clearance issues might be able to be alleviated by raising the engine a bit, or shifting it fore/aft, and might even make it look better when the hood is opened. A good example is C-4, he moved his back 4".

I moved it back 4" because I needed steering box room. I didn't have enought space for the steering box(right hand side) and core support. Also, I have mounted the cab 1" off of the frame plus I have drop spindles. This give me a very limited area for the 20" steel wheels in the fenders up front so cab positioning was critical. In the the end I'm trying to squeeze ten pounds of S*** in a 5 pound bag.

It's no that heavy - two guys can probably do it. But you know what they say, "the more, the merrier"!

The more people you have, the more precision you'll have. And you'll have a good excuse for a party afterwards. :D

It's not very heavy - just bulky.

Also, if you have any, you may want to temporarily add a few mirrors around the garage, to help your helpers to see to line the cab up right.

And if you search the HAMB, there's a few guys that have posted how they did it themselves using a 2x4 or two placed on TOP of an engine crane, slid through the cab so that they rest on the tops of where the doors go.

I know it's a little late for me to post this, but here is how I gained access to the motor mount nuts under the front A-arm support.
I cut two large slots in the front of the cross member so I could gain access behind the mounts.

I'm glad nobody beat me up on that first comment!

I had forgotten until I actually got out there and looked the crossmember over again, I didn't unbolt the old mounts...... I loosened the bolts up enough to cut them off with the sawzall.

I did however come up with an answer to my own question though.....

The clip that holds the gas lines in place was painted silver. I assumed it was a metal bracket. Once I pulled on the lines, i realized it was just a plastic clip that pops right out. I'll still use the old crazy glue drops on the washer trick to hold the nut while I get a wrench behind the bolts. I plan on cutting a hole on the passenger side to match. The kit i'm installing is the same as the one bigtumtum has pictured in an earlier post that goes with the V-6 mounts I have pictured.

Oops!!! Thanks for the info rhondayou,,,, I just noticed your post.

one of the magazines did one about 5-10 years ago. i believe it was street rodder, and i think it was a '41 2-dr sedan (41 & 42 would be the same as 46-48 for this question). i bet if u start another post with a descriptive title someone will remember which mag and which car. prolly someone can scan it and send it to you. i know i've got it somewhere, but it's in a milk crate along with hunnerds of other mags in more milk crates. it'd probably take me a whole saturday to find it.

31Tudor Utah e-mailed them to me ( Thanks again), I will try and attach them to the thread ...I think it was Street Rod Action or one of the other long gone mags that had the article.

And here is what I am putting the S10 chassis under...I dragged home a 97 long box thats rusty and beat up with a seized 4.3 for $200.00, I also have an 85 Impala that will donate its 305/OD tilt, driveshaft ,rear end(if its not too wide) and whatever else I can salvage from it, gonna spend this winter patching up the Ford body, get the frame ready this summer, and hopefully glue it all together next winter:D
