I need an Initial Timing Spec for the 361..

The motor i actually have is a .030 over 390 with a Comp Cams 268H in it though, but i need a starting spot.

Engine tuning has always been my weak point. If anyone has some input to this let me know.

Im gonna start at about 4degrees initial, does that sound about right?

the car has an automatic, and i need to get her running right.

usung the stock Distributor, with tach drive, but with a flamethrower pertronix and coil installed. so i cant adjust points.

What do you guys use as guidelines?

I got 4 degrees by turning it back till the engine just starts to labor a little.

    is this right?

School me on the black magic of tuning something.

    thanks in advance.

Glenn's manual shows 3 btdc for stick, 10 btdc automatic. I think I'd start with 10 or 12 before and tune from there.

10 to 12 ?? I'm not a motor person,,but that sounds excessive for just about any motor. imo

My Motors manual says the same thing, 3 degrees BTDC for manual transmission and 6 degrees BTDC for automatic.

To tune this engine you need a vacuum gauge, if you dont have one, now is the time to buy one. Advance the timing to maximum engine vacuum at idle and lock it down. Test drive, if it pings on lugging, back it off one half to inch on the gauge and try it again. Repeat if nesessary.
