Hot Rods Alum slots and whitewalls

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by MercDeuceMan, Nov 16, 2008.

  1. Thinking of changing the look on my 32 sedan. It has been sitting in the barn on jackstands for the past 5 or so years and the time has come to dig it out.
It is full fendered and black, way too street roddish for my tastes.

Going back to rubber running boards, louvered hood sides and putting a lot of the chrome back on the car.

It has alum slots, 15X3.5 on the front and 15X7 on the back with blackwall tires. The tires are too old to run again so I'm toying around the idea of new tires. Thinking about pinner whites. Any ideas or pictures of cars running alum slots and whites?

John, I cant wait to see your Sedan out on the road. I have never seen it.

I am not a white wall fan, but I love the old aluminum slots. Looking forward to seeing it.

  3. shame on you for letting your car sit. :) JUST KIDDING!!!! please post some pics

I would keep the black walls. They will look right and less to clean as a bonus. What kind of mill has it got?

Just my opinion- highly polishs the slots and put nice smooth sided blackwalls on 'em. Even pinner whites will look out of place on slots. Now Redlines is a different story.

  5. Here's two no-nos, alumunum wheels w/whites and a '35-up truck with no fenders. I still like it.

Here is a pic of my wife's coupe with cheaters on slotted rims. I think the WW's are 3" though. Maybe not what you are looking for but it might give you an idea. Good luck!

    Agreed!
Slots were more of an late, late 60's, early70 era rim, looks funny with a white walls.
Didn't see slots with white walls back in the 70's..........
slots need to be on raised white letter tires for the "look", or blackwalls.

Your car, your call. Having said that, I concur with the majority opinion that black tires go with these wheels.

First thought was yuck...but having seen the truck and coupe it really isn't too bad. NOT era correct obviously, but if you ignore that it really isn't too bad.
Seems like the bodystyle works with the whitewall and the wheel just adds some simple and clean sparkle to the equation. Not much different about it than just having guys run different hubcaps on the same style early car.
Now if you ran slots and wide whites on a LATER body it would look way out of place! There would be no tie in to the whitewalls at all.

Why not paint a thin whitewall on or use masking tape just so you can see exactly what it will look like on your car BEFORE you buy new tires. Cheap, easy and quick...just like I like 'em.

  14. slots=raised white letters, pinstripe whites or blackwalls..................................................... wide white and hubcaps that works...just my 2cents

I have a set of slots and was considering painting them black - more of a steel wheel look? I've never seen it done, but I'm sure its been done and it would look OK...then again maybe it wouldn't...might be another option for you though.

Thin 3/8" whitewalls like on Firestone Wide Ovals in the late '60s might work, but I'd vote blackwall over any other whitewall.

  20. I'd just run steelies before I did that. I have a pair of slots someone painted black, they look like Hell in my opinion.

Yeah, I could see that...scratch what I was saying before, and I probably won't do it either. You just saved me a day's time from prepping them, painting them and then trying to strip them back to aluminum. sometimes the minds eye needs other peoples glasses to see through.

And another, fresh out of the barn. First time it has seen the light of day in over 5 years. Besides a new engine/transmission, louvered hood sides, and detailing a really shitty engine compartment, other plans include cutting down the highback Vega buckets, 59 Impala wheel, rubber running boards and removing some of the trim black paint off some of the chrome and polished alumium.

Ok, I wouldn't change a thing! Buy a new set of those exact size black walls and drive the piss out of it. You are right about wanting to re chrome parts of the car though.
