289 ford, anybody running one

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by divco13, Nov 19, 2008.

  1. Thinking about putting a 289 4v, with a C4 in my next project, a 1941 Ford pu. Does anybody have any experince with A 289?.
I have'nt played, with one since the earily 70s.

Anybody know of a book or website that tell what parts are interchangable, on a ford 289 4v ? Just want to make sure I get all the right parts numbers.

Had a 289 with a AOD in my 56 f100. Was the best driver I ever had.

  5. I have a bunch of them laying around, 302s are the same physical size and lots cheaper to overhaul, plus eleven more cubes don't hurt.

  6. I was thinking how novel it would be to put a ford motor, in a Ford.

It's not your normal choice, for a 41 pu.

While we are here what fender's are interchangale with a 1941 PU , if any.

I know that the frame's are almost the same 35 thru 40 cars 1941 PU has different crossmember's but use's the car frame.

  7. my old 289 was so much faster than my 302, same cam & compression, heads, etc, 289 just ran stronger! i miss it.

i have several of them, tough little motors , plenty of upgrades available , easy to get parts for, the last one i built is now in my 76 ford bronco, its warmed up quite a bit with a good c4 behind it, almost too much motor for the rig , took it to the strip a couple times this summer for fun , smoked a couple late model camaros with it, they are great motors in my opinion !

I have two 302's, one in my 53 F100 and one in my 46 Business coupe. If I were building a 40/41 pickup I would not use one. Leg room is at a premium in those trucks and cutting the firewall would not be in my plan. Use an SBC and save the leg room.

I had a 289 in a '66 mustang, it ran like a scalded rat! It had 351w heads, 600cfm Holley, a big cam and a mallory dual point distributor. It wound out to 6,500 rpm easy and got 17mpg on the highway.

I had the same set up. It sounded and ran like a big block. Or that's what I was always asked. Add in a vacuum duraspark and a msd 6 box. That mileage will go up.
    Great choice.
I have a great set of aluminum heads for sale.....;)

We just built one. For about the same money as a 350 Chevy, we have as much power, and in a smaller package.

Great little motor! ours is in front of a 4 speed in a 65 Ranchero. we used an Isky Cam, and edelbrock intake and a whole lot of "nothing special" and it flat out hauls ass!

The down side of a small block ford is they are a little longer than a sbc. Also ford changes things year to year, so your accessories have to be from the right motor. With a chevy the interchangability is much better. You can mix and match parts from many different years, and the parts are cheaper. I wanted to run a ford in my T but some one GAVE me a low mileage 350 so that was that! I have less than $600 in my whole engine including the blower! Of course the home made blower set up is another story.

  17. I have 289s's in two of my drivers , a 50 ford club coupe and a 1930 ford model a , full fendered , unchopped , unchannel little sweetie running a c4 behind it , both cars start first click , idle great and run like scalded apes, I am mostly a chevy man , easy to work on, but these little 289s are some terrific motors,,,,,

My 66 mustang has one and I love it. Its only a 2v motor with petronix unit, accel wires, and super stock coil. I plan to pull it for a rebuild with 4v heads, edelbrock performer intake, holly 570 avenger, and comp camps make a nice roller cam conversion for it too. I love the motor and is a ton of fun.

Does anyone have the scoop on the shortest water pump set up, I have a 88 302 and an AOD I want to run in my 37 2 door but really don't want to cut the firewall too much. I've heard of a 93 Mustang water pump was shorter but don't know Sh** about it. Any experts out there?

I had a 289 but yanked it for a 302 with a stroker crank (actually Crushproof did the swap).

The 289 is very compact and over-square and with a cam and some headers it will scream. A 4 or 5 speed is a nice combo for this reason. It's maybe the next cheapest V-8 to build after the SBC.

my buddy has one in his 66 mustang, edelbrock 4bbl and aluminum intake, mild cam, headers, stainless exhaust (with flowmasters and my god it sounds so damn nice!) it was punched out 40 over and he runs a C4 with a shift kit and that car is an absolute blast to drive and runs like a top. Everyone always asks him what motor he has in it and when he tell them just a 289 they never believe him.

There is a guy around here who is running a 40 ford pick up 289/C4 combo great little truck

  24. Ford Racing Parts sells a short water pump conversion kit. I have used a couple of them - work great. In the aftermarket there is Snow White http://www.snowwhiteltd.com/products.htm used this one in my 31 Tudor.

The small block Ford in normal configuration is about 2" longer from rear of block to the front of the pulley. use a short water pump kit and it's pretty much the same and you don't end up with the dist. crammed into the firewall. I took out a SBC in a 40 pickup and put in a 302 for a customer and it fit just fine!

I have a 64 289 in my T coupe. Great engine. I can sit in traffic for an hour in the middle of summer and she never gets hot. Runs strong and does'nt burn a drop of oil.

Don, do you have any pictures of the 40? Is the Ford racing pump stock on any Ford product, or Ford Racing only? In other words can it be replaced on the road? Would love to put a Ford motor in my 40 sedan.

    the best part!

I had one in my 67 mustang. cop pulled me over once and said something like 'what the hell is under the hood of that thing?!?' didn't believe it was a 289. of course he let me off and then busted me again a week later!

    great motor, revs so quick
