I think he was in the Big 3 Gas Plymouth at least one or two years, Lawman. He also drove it in ARCA, at Daytona, Salem, and Ona.

Another one from that 1964 Yankee 300, a Victory Lane shot. From left to right, Linda Vaughn, Fred Lorenzen, Herb Nab, and Ralph Moody. I found this one on another website. I had the original, and ran it in an IRP program once, then Linda talked me out of it...

Another one from the IRP road course in the late 60s. This is Roger McCluskey leading Al Unser Sr. From the background, I think it's between Turn 9 and Turn 10. Turn 9 is the righthander after the short south straightaway which parallels the bridge. Turn 10 is the lefthander of the 10/11 chicane before the short straight into the carousel (Turn 12)...

Bill Kimmel, Frank's father, backs Bill Clemons' Torino into the wall at Dayton. Found this one on the daytonspeedwaylives.com site.

Lee Petty on the beach/road course at Daytona in 1954. He also used this 54 Chrysler in winning a 200-lap race at Corbin Speedway in August of that year, the weekend before the Southern 500, on his way to his first NASCAR championship. It was the first (and so far only) race for NASCAR's premier division in Kentucky...

Look at the Bumpers ! That's why they called them the "Chicago Tanks".

Love that picture from Soldier Field.

Here's another of Roy Wathen from Louisville at the old Fairgrounds, with the Newmans' last big car before they went with the Camaro. I've got (and I think I've posted) a photo of every car they had except the 58 Chevy. This 66, with Jerry Norris driving relief for Roy, won the first ARCA Salem 500.

Benny Parsons was always strong at Dayton, but this day he had some problems. I was in the flagstand, and if I recall correctly Les Snow was involved...

Hey, fuzzball, great pic at Soldier's Field. Look at the crowd! We had a problem at the old Fairgrounds in Louisville in the early days with the Figure 8 guys putting really stout bumpers on them. We were afraid of what was going to happen in an intersection crash, so we instituted a rule that they had to be stock bumpers. The competitors' solution was to scour every junkyard in three states for 50s Mercury bumpers. Great big ones.

Yep, that's exactly what our Figure 8 guys were doing and we had to outlaw it. Can you imagine one of those coming in the driver's door? We solved it with the stock bumper rule and a 1/4" steel plate from bulkhead to bulkhead on the driver's side.

    Thanks for the photos.

I've already posted the photo of Andy Hampton and Ralph Latham taking the flag at Salem, and I don't think I have any more of them. I remember Harold's problem. That was his second visit. He won on opening night in 1961.

Hey, I get a kick out of this stuff. I'm still cataloging photos I find from all over. Right now I'm busy revising all our rules at Corbin, so it may be the middle of the week before I get any more photos posted. Everybody else - keep 'em coming, I don't care where they're from.

BTW, I was reading a post on another site where somebody said the current economic situation with the automakers might set NASCAR back 30 years. I answered that post, asking what was wrong with that. It was fun then!

  27. That would be the best thing to happen to NASCAR in 30 years!!!!!!!!!

  28. I read today where HONDA is getting outa' Formula 1 racing and concentrate on the car business.

We'll see more of that happening.

I can remember just a few years ago at the ASA series, racers complaining about the price of tires going up $10/tire.

I didn't feel too sympathetic with their complaints for 4 reasons:

    #1. Nobody has to race.

#2. Many transported their car to the track with a NASCAR style 18 wheeler hauler. New Freightliner tractor and a new Featherlight trailer.

#3. With high dollar sponsorships, it's always easier to budget when you're spending someone else's $money$.

#4. Race teams lobby the sanctioning organization for the latest and greatest hi-tech stuff to go faster. Or in other words, racers want to spend more $money$.

Racers always seem to be their own worst enemy when it comes to the high cost of racing.

Reduction of factory funding and corporate sponsorship may be the best thing that can happen.

Maybe we'll get back to a time when the race car driver got his ride because of driving talent, not because of the size of the sponsor he brings with him to the race team.

I think you have to admit that there's a lot of racers running today that have more $money$ than talent. Kinda' inversely proportional to the way it's supposed to be.

I always liked that movie , I think greased lightning with richard pryor?, any way he was a moonshine runner, and later in the movie he was at a big time nascar race with just a regular truck and trailer... was set in the 70's it think.....

  30. How did you like that Caddy "Truck"? Neat huh?
