Hot Rods Educate me on this growing prejudice with Traditional Hot Rods.

I guess I haven't been around enough.... I didn't know there was any controversy!

Most of the guys here could care less what you build... but most will be right next to you in your shop helping out if you need it.

I don't care for disc brakes, sbc's, automatics and such in early cars. But I let the guy who owns the car decide... I sure as hell can't force him to build something the way I would.

Relax and enjoy the hobby... that's this forum is so big... and so good for the hobby. Most of us don't take ourselves too seriously.

 

Rid-dle 1, a puzzling question, etc. requiring some ingenuity to answer. 2, any puzzling person or thing <p>Rid-dle 2, to make many holes in; puncture throughout.

 

Build what you want and don't worry about everyone else. My Lincoln is pretty much all original and "period correct" with the original drive train. I still get people telling me to take off the radial wide whites and put on bias plys. Screw them! I'm the one driving a two ton boat down the freeway at 70mph. My safety comes first.

LOL, you obviously do not know a lot of the guys on here, we're the same in person as we seem in here. Well maybe even more so, when we get together there seems to be an endless supply of beer. I speak my mind either way. Sometimes I am more polite and diplomatic about it.

There is no set definition...it is constantly changing...what was traditional yesterday, may not be tomorrow....what you perceive as traditional I may not...

word to that. restorers wouldnt even talk to my pops back in the 70s when they found out that he was going to make a street rod out of his 34. the same restorers wont talk to me either because im a hot rod/street rodder. so i guess the battle today is between the "traditoanlist' and the guy who wants to build a car in the traditional stye but not pay thousands of dollars for the obsolete parts. that might break and/or malfunction and then where would you be? stuck on the side of the road pissed off that ur car wont work

 

I just finished cutting up rusty old rail road rails out of the ground with a torch, surrounded by oil saturated ground and big fuel tanks and oil tanks.
I was really happy I didn't blow up, now I kind of wish I did.

Was I being traditional or period correct?

Since I was using an old torch style cutting method on rail road rails that are over 100 years old that I am SURE some 32 Ford roadsters that were all steel have driven over.

But the ties are rusty, so does that make it a rat rod day.

You guys need to tell me so I know how to feel.......and who I am.

There isn't one just build what either you or your customer wants.

Drive the sh!t out of it and have fun

So far as the original question/poster- about 90% of the "haters" on any forum are people who were searching desperately for something to belong to...and once they were accepted into the "club", spend all their time belittling "lesser people" so that they can prove how cool they are now. This is not constructive criticism & means nothing.

For your customers, build what they want. Offer suggestions if you think the build may head in the wrong direction for them, the owner, to go....preferably offering visual examples to show them. Keep an open mind.

For your personal/shop/demo stuff, build what you want. You may find out that you can offer a completely new take on an old concept...and start others thinking.

Did I mention, keep an open mind??

There is a shop/poster in this thread who is building a vehicle, the original make & model of which is pretty far off from the "traditional" idea of a hot rod, custom, street rod, or whatever title is being slung around at the moment. I'd go so far as to say that most people would scratch their heads at the thought of this make being considered for anything but a restoration. But it is turning out very well, and it may just inspire some people. (And it needs to be finished-ahem. )

I said "restorer mentality". Fretting over radial vs bias tires, hose clamps, and plug wires are the activities of a guy who is trying to re-create something as it used to be.

Hot rodding is PRIMARILY -- and traditionally -- an activity intended to improve a car's performance and/or appearance.

A guy may like things the way they used to be (I do), but "period correct" implies that the old way is more important than the best way. I say, that's restorer talk.

I have noticed that there seems to be a select few that are consumed by having a true period correct ride with nothing newer than say, 1957 on thier car. I'm sorry, but again, reliability and common sense tell me to do it differently... I would take a late 327 over a rope seal 56' 265 powerpak motor ANYDAY. Have you ever put a rope seal in? THEY SUCK! There have been many improvements and engineering changes throughout the decades, take advantage of it!

 

Alot of you all know what my view on period correct and bashing people for making their car the way they like is (not that my opinion means anymore than anyone elses on here does).Im sure alot of you read that thread a few weeks ago where i defended the guy for trying to make his car better with a newer overhead valve motor.I like the flavor and look of the past (interior ,paint ,wheels ,tires ,yada ,yada ),but with accessabilty of modern parts to keep these cars on the road on a daily basis. Im skating on thin ice these days round here so im gunna leave it at that .Now you guys go out and enjoy your hotrods ...

Don't lose any sleep trying to figure out stuff like this. Because you won't figure it out. Just go out and do what your customers want you to do.

 

Some people will go to ridiculous lengths to get other's to see just about anything their way- whether it be car's, music, religion, etc. You name it, and you can always find two people making asses of themselves arguing about it(or worse) I've always figured arguing is nothing but a negative vibe/ waste of time, time that could be used to do something positive. Yeah, I've wondered about the "traditional/ period" thing before, but as with many other issues of the day, I don't care enough about it to waste any time arguing about it. As was said, "build what you like," and leave the arguing to the asshats. You'll be glad you did...

I smell what he's cooking. I sold a 69 XLCH and a 1980 FXWG mainly because I was tired of working on them, and the stigma. When you go into a stealership and walk out with a bag of parts, and a shirt, the 2 fags leaning on their new bikes flip you shit and tell you to buy a bike, not a t shirt...the same guys told me they were having forwrd controls installed. I them told them I restored BOTH my bikes MYSELF...oops, wroing forum for THIS one...

I am building a car that is leaning towards traditionalism, and towards performance. Do what YOU gotta do, and if the naysayers say otherwise, tell them to break out THIER wallet and you'll build it their way. until then....ENJOY IT!
