Hey Plym, you're right on. Around my neck of the woods (pun intended) recycled wood is a popular alternative to the weak sticks that are sold now. Ever see a 12x12 20 foot redwood beam? You can find it at an old growth wood recycler, but you will never see a new one. That's just one example of what you can find.
I found out something interesting when I did a re model job on the kitchen in my little 1924 house - in the days gone by a 2x4 measured 2in. by 4in. not 1 5/8x3 5/8. Plus all the wood was clear, no knots, sap splits, edge gouges or any of the other things that make a board less than perfect or evan useable.

  2. Who's they? Have you ever been to the SEMA website? Government (of the people, for the people) wants to see hot rodding regulated out of existence.

Like Squirrel says, follow the money.

P.S. the guys that let the guy who started this post get a piece of plywood out of the dumpster, probably would have given their insurance agent a heart attack letting him near enough the dumpster... What if he would have cut himself on a nail?

here in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver island we have what is called a free store, when you go to the dump, anything that you think someone else could use you can place in "the free store", it a large tent they have setup, i have gotten some great stuff out of it, heres just a short list, a craftsman table saw dated 1939, a black and decker band powerd by a drill, came with a drill, a router tabe brand new never used, a big toolbox full of hand tools, a big ass soldering iron, new in the box triple gauges, a few total jyms to use the metal tubeing for other projects, a rollaround side table i use next to my lathe, on and on, i cant remember everything right now, the best was the table saw, perfect working condition just needed a motor.

Last night I got so pissed because I ran out of twine to bundle up the card board and newspaper, I just dumped the whole lot in the normal trash can.

    Sometimes, it can be frustrating.

Locally there is a no pick policy at the landfill. I about cry every time I go there. A 28-29 coupe wih the doors missing, Nearly full sheets of steel, Acouple hundred gallons of lacquer and enamel paint and reducer, 40-50 feet of commercial shelving with shelves, what appeared to be a new front fender for a 57 Chev, half a dozen bags of Sakrete, dozens of clay flower pots and on and on. I did snag a set of SW gauges ina panel that would have probably put me in jail if I had gotten caught. This is controlled by the same people who say old cars are a problem. At least I am recycling what I can. Don't use the entire buffalo? Hell, we don't even use the whole hide.

In some areas of the country, state, county, city it is actually not legal to use "old" materials for framing. The inspector can not approve an addition built with "recycled"
    old denailed materials.
You don't reckon the local lumber yard owner, or his Dad or Uncle, was on city council way back when, do you?

Pure economics. When we start paying the real cost of the raw materials we pillage from the earth, the balance between labour costs and material costs will be restored.

I'm no hippy or greeny. That's just an observation.

  15. Using your logic, you might as well crush that '29 Nash because it's not gonna last forever.

    Thanks,

  16. So, you do some "green" things, but "fuck green". And screw the "yuppies and hippies"? Isn't it the jocks and the preppies that are the problem?

A little bit OT but think about this, some show took a prius around a track as fast as they could, 70 mph. A new BMW M3 hi perf. sports car with the 400 some odd hp V8 had to keep up with it, obviously not too difficult, but here's the kicker the "green" Prius averaged 17 mpg around the track whereas the "gas guzzling" sports car averaged 19 mpg!!!

Now, if I could find it when I needed it, then I'd recycle too.

That would be Top Gear, the best car show in the UK. They dislike Prius drivers, caravans and all things slow. Known to be controversial occasionally, suggesting that truck drivers murdered prostitutes for fun!

Use old cars, keep the engine tuned and you can consider yourself green. Most modern car owners don't have a clue there is anything wrong with the engine of their car until it drops it's guts on the side of the road.

Who is more likely to know their engine is running efficiently? A hot rodder or the Mum who drives her SUV two miles down the road to get milk?

  21. You must be a yuppie or a hippie since I offended you? I have nothing against better living. hotrodders and tinkerers to a fault make shit outta nothing. My beef with the :"greenies" is thay are superficial, let my neighbor see my GREEN CRED with my Pious(PRIUS). The attitude of, I am so cool I bought a SKYSTREAM WIND GENERTOR THAT WILL POWER MY DRIVEWAY LIGHTS is a weak yuppie misconception! As for my cred, I do not need to defend it. I have been a champion of smart building for over 20 years.....Do a search of my Strawbale threads.

All hobbies are a waste to those who don't share them..

I have coached baseball for years. Those wasteful lights..all those leather gloves..thousands of sunflower seeds..baseballs disgarded for a cut or scratch..
Not to mention 50 cars bringing fans..buses bringing players. My Tahoe loaded with equipment..sometimes "kids"..over 6" tall at 17-18 years old..robbing gas mileage..in my obscene SUV..
Loads of plastic bottles for water..gatoraide..some energy drinks. Spitting fouling the envirorment..MAYBE EVEN A FART..

    What a waste..

I sometimes take the XK to practice..350+ hp with one human to transport..more waste..!!

..I don't know about the golf country club behind our field..but I'm guessin..WASTE..and those dam bicylists with thier spandex..titanium framed..carbon fibre..waste..
I won't even get into my motorcylce riding WITH NO VALID DESTINATION..!

Our precious time here is important also..use wisely sure..look at yourself..but..

I am not my brothers keeper...
