I'm starting this thread to showcase all the slides that I recently received from my uncle. He and my dad and their father raced at Maple Grove in the late 60's. A lot of these shots were taken at that time. My uncle also traveled a lot in the late sixties and early 70's, taking hundreds of photographs at several well known drag strips. I'll be posting a lot of them in the near future. It's gonna be fun! :)

Weeping Willys- "the first time I saw the Weeping Willys run it suffered severe wheel shake. The front wheels shook violently and it went only 69 mph. Later when they worked the bugs out, it ran in the 11's at about 125mph. Was powered by a big Chevy engine, I think a 427."

A little hard to tell but it looks like Larry Lombardo in the Vette in the first pic. Time frame is right -pic is a bit fuzzy -Jim

This was labeled '210 @ 7.12' -"The dragster picture called '210 and 7.12 seconds' shows Ron Rivero teasing us with a time trial run. This AA/FD could run way into the 6's, but because of a crosswind or something he just zapped it up over 200 and shut it off, and as you can see, has the 'chute out in the lights."

'Nash' "The little red truck labelled "Nash" I think was driven by Nick Nash. On the rear of it was a sticker that read, "We burn coal". This was a 4-speed machine and I think he missed 3rd gear on nearly every run."

Frost vs Merkel - "The match race between Paul Frost and Jack Merkel was a disaster for Frost. His car was called "the Purple Haze". He was using a clutch-flyte trans. Manual clutch and 727 Chrysler torque-Flyte trans. On one of his runs when he pushed the selector ****on for second gear, the car stood up on the rear wheels and came down and bent the front axle."

Hine vs Strunk - The race between Hine and Bob Strunk was often seen in the late 60's. Strunk's car was a show car. It was a 23 T with a fuel injected flathead. Everything on it was chromed. I think he pushed it up or was followed down the track by a dark blue Cadillac. I think both cars had four speeds. It was just beyond description to see and hear them working through the gears. It was one of my favorite races and to this day they represent examples of true old hot rods in my mind

Wow! Does he still have his roadster? My dad would love to see it! He lives in Glenmoore. Carroll's car was always one of his favorites at the Grove.

and MORE! These are from a box labeled Sept 1968. There was no info recorded on the slides themselves though. Maybe I can get my uncle or my dad on here and they can shed some light on these...

VVV That's Jungle Jim's Nova. I believe there is an entire box of slides of one of his cars. That'll come later.

I don't think that is a yellow mustang with a copper stripe. the picture itself must just be yellowed. It's probably a whimbleton white car with a red stripe.

Look at the hood on the Mustang parked next to the white one. If you had a Ford at the time, you HAD to have one of those scoops.
