Now please dont think I am trying to raise a stink here and if thread gets deleted well at least I can say I got it off my chest. First of all I am a ****ING NEW GUY when I joined this site back in Feb of 07 and there is no denying that I had not unbolted a pair of valve covers in 25 years and there is no doubt that quite a few of FNG's such as myself get on here and get their *** reamed out. Lord knows there has been a few pieces of my *** left on a few pages of these threads. I feel simply that it is because that I did not heed the written advise recommended to me before I jumped in. Now on the flip side of that since I've joined this forum I have finished a 29 model A, and currently am building a custom 50 buick. I cannot begin to express how thankful I am to some of the old timmers on this forum that have shared advise and knowledge from their years of fiddleing around with their hot rods and/or customs. A fine example is a thread I posted yesterday on flathead clutch parts. THis is my first flathead in which I dont know a hootin holler about. The parts I was looking for if I could have found them and when I did find them in certain catalogs or ebay would have run me up in nears as 300.00. Mr. Bruce Lancaster hit me with a reply saying go to joblot. I bought the entire clutch ***embly for 149.00. Where in the hell else or what other forum (Im not looking for one) would a fella go to get advise like that. So in a nut shell we all know this can be a tuff site. But...With the wealth of knowledge that a new guy like me can learn from here is absolutly priceless. Thanks for putting up with my rant and rave.

If you think it's tuff now, you shoulda tried joining in 2004...there were hundreds of newbies that didn't heed warnings...went away and prolly never came back...

Today the HAMB is more forgiving...you had it EZ...

****... I'm embarr***ed to admit how stupid I was before I started the HAMB. Hell, I'm still stupid... but I've come a long ways thanks to you guys.

  6. I joined last year, lasted three days. Thought to myself "Why am I taking this flack from a bunch of snot nosed kids that wern't even born when I was starting to do this?"
I stayed away until a few weeks ago, because I really don't need to hear a bunch of Sh%^ from some self rtichious punk twenty something that thinks just because he's not standing in front of me he can talk to me the same way he does to his little sister.
Now, having said that, since I've come back to this forum I've come back with certain things in mind. One, is to really enjoy the help, and fellowship that comes from MOST of the HAMBers. Secondly, I've learned to either ignore the snips from people that haven't learned common decency, or occasionally, bite these little snots back.
I've learned more in a few weeks about specific things than I could learn going around asking ALL my friends. My '29 roadster is farther along than it's been in a long time, and I can thank the HAMB for a lot of it. Mike
P.S. you might want to stay clear of the nobillit (Ithink that's the name of it) forum.
They are worse than evangelical preachers over there!

I lurked for two years before I intro'd and spent over a month actually writing my intro to make sure I covered all the bases and didn't get flamed. :D I followed the "rules" and was accepted with open arms. Something to be said for lurking and reading abit before jumping in head first.

I think it's the tough love of this place that makes it so great. The mods have a hard job around here... And I'll admit I'v made it a bit harder for them a time or two :D

But honestly, if Ryan and the Boys allowed political **** an off topic discussions, this place would go mad within a few hours. Keeping it tough, on track, and BS-free has worked great.

Yea, you gotta have thick skin to hang here sometimes, but it's worth it... And when FNG does break the rules, it's fun to pull out the popcorn and watch the sparks fly! :D

There's a lot of collective auto knowledge on the HAMB. It amazes me. I've learned a lot from the HAMB.

Sometimes, you've got to wade through **** threads, but that's just the nature of an online forum. I'm guilty of flaming gay threads, when it is warranted.

Perhaps the HAMB has grown out of the "you signed up = you get h***led until you prove that you're not an idiot" stage. Perhaps that's a good thing.

Now everyone gets 1st place trophys.

It was tough for the thin skinned, sad to see it change in a way, but the info/knowledge/friends gained over the last few years kinda makes up for it.

Aside from the obvious lust of (traditional) hot rods and knowledge about them, this place has the greatest sense of humor of any forum....

this place is helping me realize a dream I have had ever since I started messing with cars over 32 years ago..and that is to build a model A Hot Rod..its slow and sometimes painful..but well worth it. Ive built other cars but this is The 1 if you know what i mean?
Have made some great friends, and have met some great people on here, those that I would have never had the oppotunity or chance to meet or talk to in my own little world...the guy i thank..or hold responsible (if you wanna look at it that way) is Ryan..

and the guy who woke me up to this place even existing..and thats Danamal.

I hope this place stays way beyond my years, and keeps the faith of this type of car building going strong for many future generations.

My tendencies are more towards guerrilla warfare and terrorism, so I just snuck in under the fence and started with boring minor answers here and there til everyone ***umed I had come through the gate.

There's still plenty of hazing going on. Especially for the newer members that post or ask the same question that's been answered 12 times already or starts a new "let's see 49 merc pictures!" thread.

THAT **** gets old, and if you do it we're going to kick your ***. Search function works! Some of y'all need to learn how to use the damn thing.

  17. No one gets reamed any more. This is all sissy chit, compaired to a few years back and it was rougher before the ******. Not that I had anything to do with making it kinder and gentler.

That said as I recall rodders have always been a pretty rough bunch, hell I learned the saying "F*#%k you very much" from my Ol' Man and that was something he said to someone he liked in a very public place.

That said if you can weed out the **** it is a good place to swap knowlege.

Tough love can be good, but sometimes it's hard to get much done on your projects with a couple broken arms, smashed in head and cracked ribs. But, you learn to roll with it after a bit and the pain doesn't hurt as much as it did at first.

But, all in all, the hamb is a great group of people and you can learn a hell of a lot and get some great help to. If you can tough it out and stick around, learn and contribute, it's a great place. Thanks Ryan and the rest of the hamb too.

Back when I started workin' on these things some 40+ yrs. ago...I got reamed every day...since then I've learned to listen a little....I think the same goes for the HAMB.."if ya don't do the homework ya deserve a little reamin'!" As for me ...if I get a little stupid; I'd gladly accept it...kinda like bringin back old memories!!!

I first lurked in 02 and I thought this site was terrifying...and it was, so I cowered away:eek:. Through lurking and experience, I fine-tuned my aspect of hot rodding. Then I joined because I felt I was "ready". Haven't looked back. The H.A.M.B. is glorious if you use it with respect. Founding fathers, I personally thank you for reaming "new guys". It keeps us all "honest" and fair in the end. Like any shop, you gotta pay your dues...speaking of Alliance Membership, I need one so hopefully someone is looking out for me this Christmas. I'm broke:(!

I agree it can be rough at times and I know that I have not been around all that long. The best advice I can give, being fairly new, is research before you ask questions. Most likely if is a traditional car related question it has been asked before and the answer is out there. If you cannot find your answer then start a thread to find out. It will probably ( not always) save your *** from getting reamed too bad. I will say the info I have gotten from the HAMB is great and most of you are right there to help out. I appreciate it.

I came here knowing as a FNG I was going to take some heat, **** normal.
I also knew that treating others with respect and some times listinging is better then foot in mouth. Since coming here I have made some good friends and helped others,
and been helped by others, I helped a fellow Hamber out of gas up in Wash, its a car thing ! Its also we are A FAMILEY we watched and worred when BigBobs house was in danger, we prayed for Ryan when he went to the sawbones, and the rehash of the 40 ford thred is unreal.

  24. I hadn't been on too long before I used das verboten " R** Rod" term . However I have since recovered from my injuries . What doesn't kill you makes you stronger . I do have a scar however .

Not at all. I just tend to find that guys are way less prone to go after women on these sights as they are other guys and from what I have heard Denise make some of the best cookies going and I for one wouldn't take the chance of never getting any by flaming her.

I remember editing a question over and over before posting so I didn't sound quite so stupid...never knew when Germ or others were gonna bust you down..Glad I stuck around though, I wouldn't have built and be driving my roadster today without the advice and expertise on the HAMB.

I lurked for a year or so, then I joined in 2004 and promptly was handed my *** by a couple HAMB veterans (rightfully so). After putting my big boy pants on and getting over it, I decided the best route was to extend myself and get involved, I offered to help out on a HAMB relay on a late 20's roadster body for another member. From the relay I met CHAZ, Dan and others.

The new kinder gentler HAMB is less ***uming for the humble but talented to post some great craftsmanship but every once in awhile I still miss GERM.

Most of the time I see someone getting reamed they deserve it. It's nice to see a place that hasn't been overcome with political correctness and tolerance for being a complete ****. 95% of the reaming could be avoided by just using the search function. The other 5% could be avoided by just understanding what the site is about and sticking with it.
