Some more photos from the Alabama Racing Pioneers

I don't know where this wreck occurred but it was a heckuva wreck for those old Modifieds!

This Studebaker was a formidable opponent. I will try to find out more about this car.

I mentioned earlier where Nero Steptoe won a race on three wheels. I had thought it occurred at the Birmingham Fairgrounds but my mother told me it happened at the Iron Bowl (in Birmingham). This is probably the photo of him doing it. I don't think I would slow down either!

To the right of the track there is what was called "Bobs Hollow" for what reason I do not know but it was a notorious place where many a car ended up down in it.

Here is number 311 owned by Cosby Hodges and driven by Ed Samples. This was a well built car and won many a race in Alabama. It raced at Daytona successfully too. Cosby Hodges also drove the car on occasion and he was a boat racer back then also.

Clicked to enlarge, then looked at the steering wheel. Is the image flipped...?

Does anyone have any pics of modifieds racing at the old Golden Gate speedway in Tampa?

  10. I thought he was french Canadian? lol Don't they drive on the wrong side of the road in France? Maybe he got crossed up in there. lol Some driver had the car off center such as Charlie Jarzombek's famous coupe, it was put more weight on the right side of the car, wonder if that is why he had the seat and steering wheel over on that side. The rest of the photo doesn't look flipped.
    Ok wed photos

  12. No, the spelling on the car is correct. I would think hehe'd want more right side bias and at the very most, sit in the middle of the car.

There are some that visit this thread that have a lot of knowledge on this car.

Looking at the photo again, he has a lot of right side off set with the engine, maybe too much and that is why he sits over to the left so the car will pass tech.

    Re: Flipped image.
At first I was going to say more about the offset then I thought of the Oswego supers, most of those guys sit on the right side. I don't recall seeing too many modifieds with the driver offset to the right...learn something every day...

  15. here some photos of Charlie J's off set and non off set coupes and vegas to see the difference

I believed he sat more in middle then to the left side
    [IMG]

  16. In the second foto he is all the way to the right. Many of his cars were center steer.
I was thinking maybe it was a matter of what track he was running at and if they had different rules concerning weight bias. But, the second and third fotos are both at Islip and he is sitting on the right. Fourth shot he's back on the right and is at Riverhead. In all fotos the engine is in the extreme left side bias. The three coupes are the exact three cars.

The Vegas are all centered engines but the first foto shows Charlie sitting on the left side while the last foto shows Charlie in the center.
I guess you can say, Charlie liked to get around, not only on the track but in his cars also.

Any old school modified guys out there?
I thought I paid attention when I went to the track, maybe not...huh?
I've seen many center steer and mostly left(driver) offset type cars but right side driver set-ups not so much...
Islip is/was a really tight almost circular track isn't it?

  18. Here is the World famous Islip bull ring. I posted it somewhere in this thread before.
Islip was built in 1948 and after Larry Mendleson, the last owner and best ever promoter died his children who had no interest in the track, solid it off and a cookie factory now resides on most of the property. Just above the track and to the left is a 1/8 mile dragstrip that stopped running sometime in the early 70s. I ran it a couple of times. I posted photos of Tommy Ivo and others there back in 64-65 at the Drag Racing thread.

Have you gone through the whole thread yet? There are a few that have posted and others that visit the site regularly. Welcome.

They sat all the way to the right because of the engine being off-set to the left. Becuse of the weight of the engine they had a high left side weight percentage; that is untill NASCAR eventually banned them.

  20. I knew you would chime in Richie. Am wondering why the switch from side to side with CJ unless it he was just testing out different configurations.

The wreck happened at Crystell Springs and the driver of car 61 was killed. The Iron Bowl was called Bogg Hollow. . That was the first no 33 stude The more famous and faster one was the 53 Starlight coupe. also no 33 painted gold and black. The 311 was owned by welthy business man Cosby Hodges JAZZ dog food and Cosby Hodges Milling co. later grason rose trans co and Ch used cars. If you notice behind the 311 you can see the Rocco and Cheaters logo on the F1 truck. also behind the 311 id Mr Pennscar driven by Bill Latham and sponsored by a car lot called Sorrful Jones. All the sales people were racers. If you make it to the pioneers meeting on the 11 th you can find out more..Bobby..

You are correct, the hollow was called "boggs Hollow". Wasn't the white Studebaker more successful than the golden one. I will tell you one thing, when the Golden 33 came to the pit entrance and fired up before coming in to the track ) a little grandstanding there) the ground shook.

I got the impression that Cosby Hodges was quite the man about town. He was a nice fellow as far as I knew.

I have not posted much on this site but I thought everyone would like to see a picture of my Father and his "Sportsman" car. It is still being run in vintage races now in Florida. It was originally raced in NJ (Wall, Flemington mostly). He passed away over a year ago. It was ran for years with a small block chevy engine in it last. This is an older picture with a flat head. His name was Ralph Carlsen.

I remember your father. He was good friends with John Garner from Staten Island. John ran a Sportsman maroon coupe #70 at Wall. That car had a slant six engine after the Flathead at some point in it. That car was built by Joe Serone a block from my place and driven by Lou Bonin in 1965 at Old Bridge as a two tone blue #3 . I ran into a guy at Williamsgrove Pa. who restored it but with a newer style box tubing chassis and cut way down body. He knew the car originated on Staten Island some how. I think he kept the number 98 on it. I sold him some pictures of it that I took in 1965.

  30. Have you gone through all the photos posted so far? I think there might be a few of him posted. If not, Pete will find something.

Your son runs karts at RR? If so, he know the Bullfather. Pete has been video taping them the last portion of the season. Some of the video can be seen on his website. You can find the link on his posts.
