I was reading about using Ford Tractor radiators. So working at NAPA I did a little digging and found that while the 5000 models radiator looks like it would work. I found a Ford tractor radiator that looks even better. Ford# is C5NN8005AB and NAPAs number is 437820. The top tank hangs over in the back(toward engine) so the upper inlet attaches to the lower side. I am going to be running a Flathead and it looks like it will take the extra inlet and outlet to look old school. Has anyone else used this Radiator?

The radiator shop I used in TX serviced airport equipment, the tugs and luggage movers.
All their radiators were heavy duty industrial Walker and looked like they would fit perfectly behing a 32 grill shell.

Thanks guys for the photos and NAPA link. As you can see the fill is right in the middle--just right for a '28-'29 shell. The C section in the bottom tank should help clear the spring bolts on the A crossmember.
I have located an other source-besides NAPA were I can get it for less. When I get all that info I'll p*** it on if anyone else wants to put this radiator in there rod too.

    Rusty,
Thats the size of the CORE only. The tanks make it taller.
I like the C section in the bottom tank.

That looks good. Looks like it would fit the shell better than a Mustang unit. Please post up your other better price source.

Bought the ford 5000 tractor radiator..looks like a great fit. some slight modifications will be needed, and re-possition of the filler neck, build a frame mount and some clips for the grill shell and it will be right on..the inlet is in the right place..the out let is in the right place. and it fills the grill shell completely..
I would load some pictures of my mock up , but i dont have a photo host..and when i post them off my PC i have to shrink the **** out of them, and than they dont resize well back to original size. ..im old and dont have the knowledge of the kids on the computers..so im going out to work in my shop and stop plinking keys:D

good to hear your rad choice, on a 27 t high roadster with 4cl 2.3 ford 5 speed I hunted down the 8-n or the 9.n ford tractor rad. as it has good capasity, vintage look, and only 15 1/2/" wide witch opens lots of great grill options. run cool:eek:

Yea, the Ford radiators seem to work real good for me. I have one behind my 235 chev in the 37' and one in my 31' with a 383. Just had to relocate the neck and they work great! I believe there from a 8N Ford, bought new at a swap, cheap too! $10.00 P1290144.JPG

I remember reading somewhere that tractor rads are designed to cool at low RPM's and not at high speeds, hope someone can shead some light on this.

I think you got an almost good tip, not quite. Water pumps are optimized for cruise rpm to provide best flow rate through a known core type. Apart from a big change in the size of the core tubes, the core won't affect much. It is fair to say that you won't know if your pump flow rate is matched to a new core, but the real difference would be that a tractor achieves best flow at lower rpm due to the intended operating speed.
For comparison, GM used exactly the same pump on a given family of SBC engines found in cars using various core types, size and thickness. This suggest that the ballpark we play in is quite large.

I've been told the same thing but no one ever gave me any facts to back up the theory. Those radiators used to be pretty inexpensive straight from Ford New Holland when I worked there years ago as compared to a comparable size car or pickup radiator.

Used a Ford 5000 radiator in my 34 Dodge sedan when it had a 265 Hemi (Aussie 6 Cyl) and three speed. Then put in a 318 and auto. Handled both of them no probs. After that I went to a early 360 crate motor and the heat went on a bit. Still handled it though. Good for chugging along in traffic. Took the bonnet sides off and that helped get the heat out. Should never have sold that car........

    Ok Richard D

it is 24 1/4" High/ Tall, the filler is off set to the right and adds about another inch to that Dim.
    19" Wide
    Core is around 2 1/2" or 2 3/4" thick
the top tank is 4" wide.

Top inlet is off set to the left
Bottom is off set to the right
    Perfect for SBC
It is a 3 core..7 fins per inch if I recall..its a better radiator than what ive got in my 53 and that ones working fine with a mild 327

there are some braces and corner brackets that may have to be altered for a 28-9 shell, but no problem..it fits well over the front spring clamp with the hole for the original A crank starter and fits in between the frame holes for mounting..all it needs is a radiator support made and possibly the filler neck taken off and a new side fill added and its a beautiful thing

shoot me a pm with your e-mail i'll send ya pictures.

  26. Thanks. I need something much shorter. Back to the drawing board!
