There is a lot of cool things to look at, I cannot run out of words to search for... try your hometowns to see if anything interesting comes up.

Hot rodder then, gold chainer today.

  6. Old Norm, a "gold chainer"? I wasn't aware gold chainers wore bib overalls. Would that make Mr. Poteet, who has a couple of 6 figure cars built a year also a gold chainer? Those that worship his Rolling Bones '34 might argue with that.

    "Normie-Poo" a "chainer"?

"Goldchainer" is a term of disrespect around here.
Mr. Grabowski has earned the respect of any real hot rodder.
I sure wish you would "enlighten" some of us who have only been rodding for 50 years or so as to what brought you to that conclusion?

    I dunno, you tell me. Maybe I should have used a (?) or < /sarcasm >

Im trying to learn stuff here so I'm having a problem with definitions here. It seems like everyone born after 1964 with a mig welder knows what traditional rod building is.

Would that make Mr. Poteet, who has a couple of 6 figure cars built a year also a gold chainer?

Isn't "who has a couple of 6 figure cars built" definitive of a gold chainer?
If not what is? Wouldn't the person building the 6 figure cars for Mr. Poteet be the real hot rodder?...I'm just asking for clarification.

Maybe we need a HAMB Wikipedia or a glossary

BTW, I'd have no problem with being a gold chainer by any definition.

I couldn't care less who disrespects that.

  9. I think Mazooma1 summed it up pretty well. To those of us who have 50+ years in this hobby, the term "gold chainer" shows disrespect. Just as the term "rat rod" is seen as disrespectful by the younger guys who are building what they think are "traditional" cars today. I think it's a generation thing. You raise a good point. I don't know who would make the decisions as to what the final definations of current terms actually are, but a "dictionary" might be useful, and prevent some people from putting their foot in their mouth by mis usuing a term. The funny part is, Norm would get a big laugh out of the very idea that he was called a "gold chainer". Those of us who respect him for the hot rodding icon that he is, are the ones who take offense.

Gives me the shakes thinking about the road rash that guy could get!!!

  11. Typed in Jalopy.....a few cool pics!

  12. Why is this guy wearing a helmet?

  13. That's Rollie Free. He went 156 like that! He's wearing the helmet because the rules dictated it. But, at that time, leathers wern't required, and the thinking was bare, oiled skin, was more aerodynamic than clothes. The road rash is one thing, but what about trusting that flemsey fender to keep his manhood off the tire!!:eek:

What search did you use to find this picture? I would like to know if it was staged or not

  16. It is great that they finally opened this vault up. I worked on the same floor as the archive a number of years ago, and was always thrilled to see stuff. I didn't realize they had so many cool hot rod things though! It is going to take some time to go through it all.

There was a time that you could actually buy prints of the work in the archive, not sure if it still happening though.

I think this is a handmade aluminum body being shipped from the coachbuilder (probably Touring) to the Alfa Romeo factory to be mounted to the chassis. The big wheels are on a buck or fixture to hold the body.

    The car is a 6C 2500.

I am 100% sure the Italians did not invent donks.

you notice the date on the magazine is 1972? They must have sanitized the fifties for the seventies. explains lack of tattoos and weird hair colors.

"just like the fifties, bro" is a commonly referenced quote here, because this is *exactly* some folks' version of the fifties. the quote is a none-too-subtle dig at that...

Oh I get the joke. Seems to be the rock-a-billy nerds that think the 50's were nothing but getting drunk and rockin out with huge pomadour hair and chain wallets.
I wasn't sure if the guy was serious about his comment or not because the photo looks more authentic than the distorted version the 12" jean cuff crowd seems to believe in. Even though it is dated 1972. I guess I was trying to continue the joke. Sarcasm on the internet is tough to express sometimes.

I am still looking at all the photos on there!
This one looks fun to drive. What the heck would be the purpose of this?

It has to be traditional, it is from 1951.
