Has anyone done a chopped bubbletop?

I was just looking at my olds in the garage, and thought how nice it would look, with a couple of inches gone from the roof, They look good anyway, but a chop keeping the nice profile would be cool.

I think bubbletops all look good as is.

 

Second that... lower the hell out of it but not chopped. some things should remain the same...GHOST

 

I've seen a few and liked most of them.....guess it depends on your skills. I think TEX Smith's how to chop tops has an article on doing a bubbletop car.

I bought that book when I was going to chop the top on my 54 Chevy, didn't learn a thing. I got all my in from the TONY and FLOP post on here. TECH post are always the best

Unfortunately, yes. Seen it right here on the H.A.M.B., proportions totally ****ed.

 

I haven't chopped a bubbletop. Personally, I'm not too into chops on ANY car, But I have to say:
If you want to, then go ahead! Don't listen to nay-sayers.
It's your car, do what YOU want.
But that doesn't seem too popular of an ideal now days.

What would you do for gl*** in a chopped bubbletop? Wouldn't it be all out of whack?

 

I wondered about the gl*** too. Be a ***** to cut, a replacement would cost biggida bucks. You could maybe drop it "old school" without cutting it but, a small group is forming up to come and hurt you if you chop it...I'm just sayin'...

 

I was with the "don't" crowd until this summer---there's a ****er yellow 60 Caddy out there, I saw it at Bowling Green HRR and Ducktail......it's absolutely stunning. Looks like it's whacked about 2 1/2". Just plain perfect proportions
Don't know if the chop would translate well to your Olds....but that Cadillac........it was better than ****** I stood and stared at it for I know ten minutes at Ducktail.
YES, you CAN chop a bubbletop!

 

I wouldn't, but thats just me. A convertible windshield is a couple inches lower. Side and back gl*** is curved like a ball so gl*** would be a killer.

 

The man is right...in person it will set you on your heels. I wouldn't want to conquer one without having an ocean full of determination and confidence, though.

Ok, OK, step away from the sawzall, it was just a thought...looks like a lot of work. Most of the chops I see are on 59 and 60 chevs, buicks and cads. 61/62 gm are a bit differant, more bubble for the buck. Thanks fellas/gals...

 

Don't see "why" as it really won't look that different,compared to how other chops tend to give a car a new look to where people are like 'what is that",,If yer gonna do it

Hmmmm....what do you consider a bubbletop? There is quite a difference between '60 and '61.....

I've never thought of 1960 GM's as bubbles.....the windsheild stantions and back gl*** don't "bubble" like a '61, ya know?

 

I believe that the term bubbletop didn't come into use until after the '62 model Impala, which had the square top. But they also produced a small number of '62's with the '61-style top and that's when I first heard the term, which was used to differentiate between the two styles of '62's. I ***ume the '62 bubbles were produced to give the Nascar version a more steamlined profile.

 

I'd say, Cut the gl*** FIRST, then make the metal fit the gl***, you can always reweld metal not gl***

 

Drop the gl*** down in the A piller pocket and lay down the back. The ****ernut caddy is a work of art and has more work in it that meets the eye. The builder is a master and has an eye for style while thinking outside the box. LOL

Yes, the metal would be a challange, given the 'pigon breast' shape of '61-'62 A posts. The cant rails will have to be step cut and slid foward to keep the shape. Depending on how heavy of a chop you're after, you may have too pie cut and tilt the A post inboard, than rebuild the windwing frames/gl***.

there have been a few 1960 ford starliners in the last few years with a mild chop that turned out really well, dont have any pics though, maybe sombody else has a few. at least 3 were done. also Stevie Ray Vaughns 65 Riv

 

chevy only made bubbletops 61-62.........richie..............

 

I'd like to see a good chop on a bubble top.
That Caddy has a nice chop, but it's slab sides need a diet, IMO. Would look really good with a section I think.

 

I would like to see this sectioned.? anyone?
