  3. I went to the 20 year anniversary screening event a few years back in Newport. They showed the movie on the big screen and had a panel discussion with the cast and the director afterwards. Darren McGavin was there but didn't take place in the discussion. It was kinds cool to see all the kids...Ralphie (Peter Billingsly) was a horses ass. Very smug and acted like he really didn't want to be there in the first place. More than likely he's just tired of people yelling "you'll shoot your eye out" at him in public.

Highlight of the evening...Scott Farkus' autograph! Super cool guy. He spent the whole time hanging with crowd taking pictures and putting people in chicken wings unitl they said "uncle"! He was actually on the Christopher Titus TV show a few years ago as Titus' brother.

On a side note, "Flick" has gone on to be in numerous porn movies as an "extra". His name is Scotty (can't remember the last name). Not sure if he's getting paid to stick his tongue to any poles..."I triple dawg dare ya!"

I love that movie, have it on DVD. Christmas was alot like that for me as a kid. But THE present boys wanted in my time was an electric train. I got a Marx set [wink, wink] from my dad when I was just 2 years old. Got the only one I got, when I was old enough to appreciate it, an American Flyer set, when I was 4 years old. Oddly enough at 56 years old I still have the Flyer set and it runs perfectly. Thats my other hobby, antique toy trains.

They did a lot of the filming in public square in Cleveland when i still lived there in the early 80s. They did a lot of it late at night, and I worked 2nd shift as a guard in the Cuyahoga Couty Correctional facility north of the square. I had to skirt around the closed areas on the way home and saw all the lights. I love that movie.

Buy this house and re-live Ralphies adventures in the original house from the movie "A Christmas Story". The # 1 Christmas movie of all time. Still attracts hundreds of people from all over who are interested in seeing this historic Christmas icon. The original shed from the movie still stands in the back yard, and will bring back childhood memories. The home has been vinyl sided, re-roofed and new windows since the release of the movie. Backyard view overlooks Cleveland Ohio.

  16. A Christmas Story contains bits and characters from lots of Jean Shepherd's stories. You can find most of them in his books "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" and "Wanda Hickey's Night Of Golden Memories and Other Disasters". Both books will really strike a chord for most people who were raised in the midwest. He also wrote a lot of stories for Playboy and Car & Driver back in the late 70's and early 80's I believe. I managed to talk to him for a few minutes once when I was able to get a call thru when he was a guest one night on Larry Glick's late night talk show on WBZ in Boston.

PBS produced a couple of shows based on his stories years ago that had a lot of the same characters. I think Darren McGavin also played the father in at least one of the shows. I may have taped some of them, but it's been years since I've seen them.

Jean Shepherd not only narrated A Christmas Story, but sppeared briefly on screen as the department store Santa. There is a sort of follow up movie called My Summer Story with Charles Grodin and Mary Steenburgen as Ralphie's parents. But it's hardly worth the bother and if you're a Jean Shepherd/Christmas Story fan you'll likely be disappointed. The PBS shows are much closer to the feel of the original stories.

My Buddy Johnny Moran's house. I grew up at 3029 Cleveland St, which is the next block over. Went to Harding school, and the house across the street from me was Flicks house. Last name was Flickinger. If you are ever in Hammond, Indiana, stop on the corner of Kennedy and 163rd Place and have a PBR at Flicks Tavern.

You can listen to his late night radio show from the 6-'s and 70's. Good stuff.

I can't believe there's anyone left on the planet who hasn't seen this movie! My wife and I have developed a tradition (shitty one actually) of all-night Christmas wrapping on Christmas Eve. I kick on TBS, and the movie usually plays thru about 5 times by the time we get finished! Near the end of the wrapping, I'm reciting the entire movie and my wife is about to choke me with ribbon! The movie is truly a tribute to more innocent times, and although it's 20-25 yrs. before my time, a lot of my childhood growing up in Indiana is very similar and has the same fond memories.

"Well, just move them when you get to school!" (Mom) :D

My nine year old little girl and me watched it last night two times in a row. Every year I turn it on and she says she hates it, two minutes later she's hooked. The iron in the fight seen is the shizzle. The binder fire truck is equally killer.

We watch it countless times a year. And Christmas Vacation. I may like Clark Griswald better.

  21. I was reading this thread earlier this evening and laughing out loud at some of the commends and quotes. My wife thought I was nuts so I told her why I was laughing and read some. She didn't get it. She's a car gal and all but she never liked the movie! I also love the movie. Fra..gile, must be French.

For all you trivia fans, What was the old man's name? He's just always referred to as the od man.

  23. I remember seeing it for the first time as a kid, back not long after it had come out, and thinking those Model A bodies in the alley sure looked pretty nice for someone's old junkers, the paint was too shiny.

But when that's all you can nitpick, you know you're watching a good movie.

The movie was filmed in Clevelend but is based on a book written by a local guy named Jean Shepard. It's the 25th anniversary and the town of Hammond, IN has a replica of the Christmas mountain that you can take a picture with santa, the ugliest lamp contest, the mommy's little piggy eating contest, and the OH FUUUDGe race where you have to run with a hub cap full of lug nuts. There's a tour of the original house in Hammond and the chinese restaurant. Check it out at gohammond.com Oh yeah I wish my alley looked like that.

...some of it was filmed in Toronto 'cause I helped my boss at the time take 6 cars down to the filming area. The Terraplane was his + the model A body and I can't remember what other cars we had. I met all those kids but never met McGavin

Very cool indeed if you are ever in cleveland. the area is off west 14th street called tremont. my sister has a cool little bistro in that hood. She was a sponsor for the tour one year gave me her leg lamp. The neighborhood still looks like in the movie, for the most part

    "I triple dog dare you"

Also when sitting on the couch opening presents Christmas morning when the wife plunks the present ( bowling ball) on the old mans nuts on the couch and he answers in a high pitch voice "Thanks".

    A classic for sure.

..I drove down a white 37 Packard convertible , another guy drove the Terraplane, and the boss drove a car hauler with a couple of A's & T's on it. They were mostly used for cars on the street in a few background shots. I remember the Terraplane being used in an alley shot . Workin' for those movie people is a real treat !
