I'm going to be in the market for a new distributor. For chev 350. I don't want to spend a ton of $ so the ones that require a seperate box to run them are out of the question. It can be HEI or small cap as long as it has male terminals on the cap. Don't want accel because whoe car is swede& chrome and I don't want a beige cap.So what do you fellows think the best to go with for ---say less than $200.00,oh and it has to have vac-can
I just got one of these.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Small-Cap-DISTRIBUTOR-BBC-396-402-427-454-502_W0QQitemZ140255445560QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item140255445560&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
Oh, I saw on the e-bay store they have procomp coil, thats why I thought that is what the dizzy was---I'm dizzy!!
Don't pay any attention to the Procomp junk that was in the car when the pic was taken, but U can see why I want a black or red cap,I have room for HEI, I bought one of summits "blueprinted" hei's I don't think they know what the word blueprinted means--it had .060 clearance between gear & housing, adjustable vac-can was defictive, had cheep *** weights, and pins are too short to put stock weights---It is JUNK! Had the Procomp first--the coil went south after 2 weeks and they wouldn't do anything about it and I decided I wanted vac advance (which it didn't have so I took it out and bought this JUNK piece of **** and I don't want to buy more junk, thats why I'm asking for advice thanks
You can always go GM HEI and update it with better coil and whatever. Should be a gazillion of em out there. I took a points style dist. and went with pertronix for hei with a hot coil. Dizzy free and the kit about 79.00
http://store.summitracing.com/partd...908216+4294840140+4294889107+115&autoview=sku A little over your price cap at $300 but this is the one I installed in my 40 Ford with a SBC. Small body ... so it LOOKED like a point type distributor ... but it is HEI. Mine came with two caps ... the one shown and a older style ( original 57 Chevy looking one ). And it does not require a MSD box. .
Why not a unilte? they dont need a box they are adjustable for advance curves and they come with or without vac. Ive had very good luck with them. FED
Are they made by Mallory? If so the only ones I see are priced real high and have female dist caps,I have brand new wires and would like a cap with male connectors . which unilite are U refering to? thanks
This seems like a pattern... From what I'm reading, you have junk Procomp and Summit distributors which you'd like to replace with something better, BUT you don't want to spend over $200. I'll bet you spent less than $200 each when you bought the Procomp and Summit too... How can you expect higher quality without expecting to spend more??? Maybe sell the two dizzys you have and use that cash PLUS your $200 to buy a better distributor like the one Deuce Roadster posted. Or maybe try finding a better used dizzy in the HAMB cl***ifieds. Then file this experience under lessons learned...
Ck Summit racing in house brand they have a ready to run dist for small block chevys around 200.00 that looks just like a MSD (and there is a reason it does) they are buying them and selling them as theirs but they will not be on the same page as the msd stuff. No hi fire / idiot / race box needed , just add a coil and go good luck
I have a Mallory Unilight in my Model A Truck hooked up to a basic MSD box.......Drag raced the hell out of it.....I bought one new in 1987 with my graduation party money, I still have that one and it still works after years of abuse........I probably have pushed one of them harder than any of my buddies have....with no problems.........When they came out alot of people had problems with them......some had poor electrical setups ect.........you can find people that hate or dislike any brand of anything.....and some of them never even tried the stuff...........Theirs alot out available should be an easy find...Littleman
GM HEI is the best for the money, and can be tweaked. The reason for the brown cap on ACCEL stuff is that is not plastic but made of cellulose and will not conduct even stray sparks. Use a cap with br*** lugs, no matter what. Moroso Blue Max wires are the only wires to use, though Taylor has some good stuff, and is cheaper. Money talks and ******** walks. If you are bucks up after selling the junk go MSD. There is none better. Color co-ordination is for interior designers. Form follows function. Go not show. Chrome won't get you home. You know the drill. See what the big dogs use. Copy. Grin and make like it was your idea. It's about using your car in the end. Spark ****ter is from a variety of sources. Cam shaft gears and sloppy timing chains are also culprits. Double roller timing chains take some out. Gear drives are better but a pain in the ***. It's the whole enchilda that counts. Also, if you're into taking the coil off the top of a HEI, check out truck distributors that came with small caps. The large HEI type caps, of course are to gain distance between the lugs so there is no crossfiring. I know you know all this. I'm just an echo of good reasoning and glad to be a bother.
I got Mine on FE Fords. Had no trouble. OLD BEET has been running His for way over ten yrs only one problem. I have a unilite not hei.

Important to disconnect em if you're welding on the car. I typically disconnect them when I charge the battery. Besides that, Im really not babying them. Between my dad and I, I think we're running 4 of em? One of them has been on his 4 banger since about 1990 or so. Oddly, I have several buddies that say MSD boxes ****?! I've had greal luck with those too. Perhaps our buddies just blow S$#T up?
