I need new bumper bolts for my '49 Merc bumpers.No...bumpers won't get shaved.I just found out stock Merc bumper bolts have square heads according to the C&G site whereas Fords have a round head.I have round ones on my Merc and never really realized the square bolts before...that's really true ?

Edit : Just went through my files and found this.Never ever noticed those before.Guess I answered my own question...

49-51 Merc bumper bolts have round heads. Catalog shows Part # 8M 17758 for Mercury 7/16-20 x 1 3/8 inches long. Coarse threaded bolts are easier to find than fine threaded. Dennis Carpenter has them: www.dennis-carpenter.com His part numbers are B9A-17758 and 1M-17758-SS for stainless bumper bolts used on 51 mercs. In any case no 49-51 Mercs had square headed bumper bolts that I know off.

This photo is of the Sam Barris Mercury. I think the people at Brizio knew what they where doing when they put square bumper bolts on this perfect restoration.

Could that vary depending what factory the car was made?

Nice 54 Mr. Burnco. I think I saw it at mooneyes BBQ. Are you heading out to the christmas show next weekend?
I'm sure there is a thread about it, but I didn't see it.

Thanks much for your input guys ! I now just have to decide between square and round bolts...actually the round ones look nicer, don't you think ?

Another question for the Merc Club...is there any Mercury rim out there with same bolt circle as the '49-'51 rims but narrower than 5,5"...like 4,5" for example ?

And Bob...the video is nice but too damn short ! Lol...

    Hey,
I beleve Mopar had a 5.5 1/2 x 4.5. Also, you could always have your 5.5 1/2s centers cut out and rewelded to ANY sized rim. Streetrodders do this all the time.

My '51 has round bumper bolts and I know the history of it since new, they haven't been changed. I'm guessing it depends on where the car was assembled. Kinda like the Chevy 1 piece versus 3 piece bumpers.

  16. Yea,Shoebox wheels...

  17. Check these out! They were sent to me by a friend on myspace...Any of you guys know the car or the owner?

Yes guys, Caddy motor still with it...notice I said 'with' rather than in! Have a look at 'Rebirth of a '46 merc part (i)' on here and you will see what I mean!!

You have made me feel really guilty now for pulling her apart but I hope I won't disappoint you all when she comes out the other end and a lot cooler than she already is! Had to do it...it would never have got through our MOT system without.....Sorry!!

Caddy has got a presant when it all gets put back together though, a beautiful tri power set up from a guy in Canada ( can't remember his name and never did thank him properly so....)

Any more information on the birds history would be really appreciated from you guys or anyone else reading this.

    Thanks

Aren't shoebox wheels and Mopar wheels 5 on 4 1/2" pattern, while stock Mercs are 5 on 5"? I don't think you can put a shoebox wheel on a Merc.

Someone like Wheelkid could knock the Merc centers out and weld them into a set of shoebox hoops though.

That's almost correct Squablow, Shoes used the smaller bolt pattern as did the other Ford Motor Co. products excepting Lincolns/Mercurys & 1/2 ton trucks which stayed with the 5 5.5, did so through the 70s.

First of all that is a nice Merc.

How to over analyze a photo.

Looks like a Barris crest on the fender, but the rear window is positioned to high and forward for a Barris chop. The car is probably located east of the rocky's because of the bubble skirts and the position of the spotlights.

One could make a complete thread on spotlight positioning relative to regions. west coast the lense point down, and close to the hood. Other areas they point back toward the pillar. There are probably even more variations than that.

In answer to your question, I don't know who owns the car.

The car is a Texas car, local to the North Texas area. I see it all the time and have talked to the guy and what I think is his son several times but do not remember the names. I don't think they would know who I am without my car...one of those type of things. Nice guys though. It shows up in the Lewisville area often. James Crawford pinstripped it IIRC.

Is that the car that was for sale at winter turlock, twice? My friend sold it and then it was there again the next year for sale. That thing is so cool. I wanted it sooooo bad.

No, Merc switched over to 4.5 from 52-54, then to 5x5 from 55 up to I believe 60 or 61, going back to the 4.5 bolt pattern shared with Ford by around 62.
