I don't think this thread will last long, as it's not 'directly' related to rods, but I'm always looking for more tunes.

If it were me, in addition to the Rock and Bop, I'd add some other popular genre's from the 40's and 50's. Think Jump and Jive, low down Blues, Bluegrass instrumentals, and Rockin' Jazz. Oh, and don't forget some acapela doowop. And, Hank Sr. Gotta have Hank Sr. And, anything that might have been heard on the Louisiana Hayride!

Graham, seems to me that this is directly car related. Its period cruise music.

You know my name?! Dad, is that you?!

I have no problem with a music thread, but they pop up from time to time and get closed. I wasn't trying to offend.

In December 68 after listening to AFVN and the barrage of music requested by a group of individuals in Pleiku for most of a year Classical music sounded pretty good on the am-fm multiplex radio in my then new 69 Olds Cutlass. A hell of a lot more romatic when my girlfriend at the time was with me too.

Lately I haven't had anything but dual pipes for a sound system and the 71 has a real bark to it.
Otherwise the choice of music somewhat depends on what I am doing at the time. Cruising around town 60's pop rock, long hard road trips call for a variety but either Jeff Beck or ZZ Top after dark.
The commute to work is usually aided by a local station with a pair of enjoyable dj's who keep things going.
The sound track to Top Gun used to be fun on a road trip until the kids played it about 25 times between WA state and Texas 20 years ago. Dad and I didn't take it out of the case once on the way back.

Remember when having a "fader" switch and one rear seat speaker was a big deal with your AM tube type radio?

    truth.

Now don't get me wrong, some rockabilly is OK, I still prefer golden era rock, classic rock and punk a lot more, but it seams to me that people think listening to anything with 'abilly' at the end of it is a requirement of being into hotrods, and I think that's kinda dumb. But that's just me :p

again, nothing against the music, just don't judge people on what they listen too, just what they drive :p

  14. Weeeelll..... the very best music of the 50s for me was Elvis in the Sun studio. Anything before he went to RCA. But guess what? It was pure.... ahem... er... um.... pure rockabilly.
You cant really talk about rock n roll from the 50s without involving rockabilly, because the rockabilly cats were so influential. Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, to name a few. Hank Williams "Move It On Over" is rockabilly, so is some early Fats Domino from 1948 onwards. That's right... 1948. Rockabilly had morphed into rock n roll by 1956, but many of the elements of rockabilly lived on in rock n roll, like echo on the vocals, four beats to the bar kick drum, and solid backbeat.

  15. Yeah but the smart ones had the Blues.
If your interested I have about 18,000 blues recordings. Everything from Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Sleepy John Estes, Memphis Slim, Bessie Smith(Southern Delta) to the more well known like BB King, Junior Wells, Willie Dixon, Elmore James, Magic Sam, Luther Allison, Sonny Boy Williamson (One and two:rolleyes:) Otis Rush, (South Side Chicago Blues) on up to Taj Mahal, Allman Bros, Early Fleetwood Mac (Great 'Blue eyes' Blues band) Cream, The Yardbirds (Who became Led Zeppelin, in themselves a great Blues band!) Big Brother & the Holding Company with Janis Joplin (The first white woman voted into the Blues hall of fame)
Then there is the modern Blues like The Bondi Cigars, Blues Traveler, Johnny Lang, Susan Tedeschi.

You will be blown away by the amount of Blues influence you hear in Rock-a-billy, I mean after all................
The Blues had a baby and they called it Rock'n'Roll.
    (Quote by Muddy Waters)

    Doc.

PS, this list could get very long very fast!

  17. How about Russel Scott and His Red hots? Newer well last 20 years anyway. Another who comes to mind would be Buck Owens (R.I.P.) I am going to see a popular performer at the Buck Owen's Crystal Palace tommorrow night. Lets just say he sings "I'm in love with my car" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6KDq1z9jzw) a 36' 3 window and has never really been discussed on here even though he loves old cars and has his own shop. Wonder if he is a lurker like Jay Leno is. You do the math on who he is.-Weeks

A bazillion black street musicians from the '30's-40's like Blind Willie McTell, Son House, Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson I, Leadbelly, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Hank Williams Sr, Merle Travis and his brother, Hank Snow, Otis Rush, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart, Lonnie Mack, JJ Cale, .Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell...My list is a mile long. My favorite guitar player/ live performer would be controversial, but its an Irishman named Rory Gallagher. He took the blues, folk, and country and added a treble booster and set everything to stun. He started as a kid literally with all of those influences, burned down every house he played in and literally played himself to death at 48 years old. Its a passion you hear really, just like with the cars when you let it all hang out.

I grew up listening to Red Foley's show on KWTO in Springfield, where you would hear Brenda Lee belting it out, Patsy Cline, Faron Young, Johnny Horton. Great days. There was Slim Wilson and the Tall Timber Trio from the old ballroom in Fantastic Caverns. Memories.

Buck and Don were really good too. My dad saw them in Bakersfield in '57 and their attack in a small room was stunning. He said they played until the place ran out of beer. RIP Buck, sorry Hee Haw got you, you were way better than that.

"All 50's rockabilly is Rock'n'Roll, but not all Rock'n'Roll is rockabilly"

it's just been messed with and bastardised so much people don't recognise it.Originally the only people called "rockabillies" where the predominantly(but not exclusively)white musicians that played it and they gave us some of the finest kick ass R'n'R ever recorded.
Calling yourself a "rockabilly" because you dress a certain way or live a certain lifestyle is a relatively recent fad that has unfortunately overshadowed the importance of the early efforts of giants such as Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, the list is endless. To overlook some of Americas' finest '50's roots music because it has become associated with a fashion trend would be criminal. Just how I feel about it.
    Paul.

    Ooh,and don't forget,you'll want a shitload of Link Wray,and also the Sonics.Wild R'n'R & 60's garage punk!

There is no such thing,,saying what music is "traditional" you then say That anyone who had a hot rod and didn't listen to this music wasn't traditional..

Yous don't get it at all music ,,inspires as does art,,,that in turn leads to creation
sometimes of music and art,,passion,,,next time you see a neat hoy rod think about those things and not all the zillion dollar "traditional" pieces all over the car

By th way Mozart inspired music which lead to Rock n Roll and other forms

my gawd get over trying to be cool

Dude new rockabilly is where its at. Nothing as cool as a die hard greaser singing about how his hubcaps need new spark plugs.

Thats pretty cool in itself. I like the inspiration, creation, and passion of music as it should be, art. That transends style or mode. There are many muses involved, poetic, mentally transferring an idea, and passion that brings together music that brings people back over and over to an artist. It is born from poverty, boredom, intellect, lust, many things. But how the thought is converyed and the power it inspires is what makes it real and visceral, making it stand the test of time. This ones new, but damn good.
